Donald Newton
NISKAYUNA, N.Y. — Donald Newton, 85, a former resident of Wilmette, Ill., died Dec. 25, 2002, at Northwoods Rehabilitation in Niskayuna.
He was born Feb. 28, 1917, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Edmund and Ruth (Buffett) Newton.
He attended schools in Margaretville and Jamaica, N.Y., and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and a master’s degree from Rutgers University.
He married
Virginia Davis on Nov. 5, 1941, in Trinidad.
Mr. Newton was a partner in the Chicago engineering firm of Greeley and Hansen for many years until the time of his retirement.
He was a member of the Sheridan Shores Yacht Club in Wilmette, Ill.
He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying sailing, golf, skiing and spending time at his camp in Maine.
Survivors include his wife of Niskayuna; three daughters, Carolyn Haspray of Montgomery Center, Margaret Newton of Seattle, Wash., and Betty Newton of Rolling Meadows, Ill.; a son, David Newton of Niskayuna; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Peggy Martin of Louisville, Ky.; two brothers, Richard Newton and Edward Newton, both of Reading, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Douglas Newton.
The funeral service will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington with the Rev. David Bauscher, pastor of the Assembly Church of God in Cambridge, N.Y., officiating.
Friends may call Sunday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Meadows or the Vermont Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
Chester W. Karnacewicz
NORTH WALPOLE, N.H. — Chester W. Karnacewicz died Dec. 27, 2002, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.
He was born in Chicopee, Mass.
Funeral arrangements are pending with the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls, Vt.
Elizabeth Andrew Rites
BENNINGTON — The funeral service for Elizabeth “Biddie” Andrew, 93, who died Dec. 22, 2002, was held Friday at the Missionary Alliance Church in Bennington.
The Rev. Kenneth Jolivette, pastor of Calvary Church in West Townshend, officiated. Burial followed in Hinsdillville cemetery in North Bennington.
Pianist was Carrie Winsley and soloist was Winnie Lidstone.
Pallbearers were Bob Perry, John Hohman, Bill Winsley and John MacDonald.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.
Anna Fredette
WEST RUTLAND — Anna Fredette, 80, died Feb. 1, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
She was born on Feb. 15, 1922, in West Rutland, the daughter of Jozef and Rozalia (Gawet) Frac.
She married
Leo Fredette on June 28, 1952. Mr. Fredette died Oct. 1, 1999.
Mrs. Fredette was a longtime resident of West Rutland, and a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church.
She worked as a seamstress for many years at several local companies.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Logan of West Rutland; a son, Joseph Fredette of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; two brothers, Anthony Frac of Bristol, Conn., and John Frac of Rutland; a granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Burial will be at a later date in the St. Stanislaus Kostka cemetery.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home.

John C. White
FAIR HAVEN — John Charles White, 71, died Feb. 2, 2003 at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland after a short illness.
He was born on Oct. 21, 1931, in West Castleton, the son of Emery S. White Sr. and Mary Ellen (Stoneburner) White. He graduated from Fair Haven High School in 1949.
Mr. White worked for 11 years as a quarry worker for Green Mountain Marble Company. He then worked for the state of Vermont as a custodian at the state-owned buildings on McKinley Avenue for 27 years, retiring in 1992.
He was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church, a member and past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 810 of Fair Haven, a former member of the Msg. John M. Brown Fourth Degree Assembly 232 of Rutland, a current member and past faithful navigator of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Assembly 2539 of Fair Haven. He received the Sir Knight of the Year Award in 2000.
Mr. White was an honorary life member of the Castleton Volunteer Fire Department and was recognized for 15 years of active service to the fire department. He was a charter member and past commander of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 49 of Fair Haven and a honorary life member of Bomoseen Grange 273.
Survivors include his brother, Emery White Jr. of Fair Haven; a stepdaughter, Linda King of Washington, D.C.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen M. White, on Oct. 6, 2001.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church. The Rev. Gerald Flater will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Cedar Grove cemetery.
Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be given to the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Assembly 2539, in care of John Rudnicki, P.O. Box 413, Fair Haven, 05743.
Robert C. Teachout
Robert C. Teachout, 86, of Rutland, died Feb. 1 in Rutland.
Bob was owner and operator of Teachout Printing for 50 years.
Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home.
Anna C. Duffy
BOMOSEEN — Anna Churchill Duffy, 96, a former longtime resident of North Chittenden, died Feb. 2, 2003, at her home.
Funeral arrangements are pending with the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.
Gote Sartz
POULTNEY — Gote Sartz, 70, died Jan. 28, 2003 at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Albmy, Sweden, Feb. 23, 1932, the son of Gota and Rolf Sartz.
Mr. Sartz was the retired chief of police of Cornish, N.H. and was once a part-time deputy sheriff for the Rutland County Sheriff’s Department, and a retired correctional officer for the Vermont Department of Corrections.
He is survived by his identical twin brother, Rolf Sartz of Stockholm, Sweden; three daughters, Lorene of West Palm Beach, Fla., Jill of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Joan of Rochester, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and his long-time companion, Kathleen Britten.
Services will be private.
Friends are invited to a celebration of his life at 535 Clarendon Ave., West Rutland today from 3 to 6 p.m.
The Rev. Irving French Rites
The memorial service for the Rev. Irving E. French, 90, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Rutland, who died Jan. 26, 2003 in Saratoga Hospital, was held Feb. 1, 2003, at Grace Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. Robert B. Curry, pastor, officiated.
Organist was Alan D. Walker, minister of music emeritus.
David L. Smith, son-in-law, offered the eulogy.
In attendance were members of the Mendon United Methodist Church and the West Rutland United Church.
Tossing Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Catherine M. Hogan Rites
Funeral services for Catherine M. Hogan, 82, who died Jan. 29, 2003, were held Saturday at Clifford Funeral Home. Officiating was the Rev. Andre Houle, pastor of St. Peter’s Church in Rutland.
Burial will be at a later date in Hillside cemetery in Castleton.
Organist was James Cassarino. Vocalist was Elise Cassarino.
Prayer services were held Saturday at Clifford Funeral Home by members of the Sodality of St. Peter’s Church.

Dorothy Lawson Rites
WALLINGFORD — The memorial service for Dorothy Lawson, 81, who died Jan. 25, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center, was held Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Wallingford. The Rev. Donald Caskie, pastor, officiated.
Organist was Wendy Savery. Vocalist was Laureen Marquis.
Burial will be at a later date in Newport Center cemetery.
Arrangements are by the Wallingford Aldous Funeral Home.

Margaret D. Stimpson
BENNINGTON — Margaret D. Stimpson, 85, died Feb. 2, 2003 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
She was born in Penzance, England, Dec. 21, 1917, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Symons) Thomas. She received her education in Brooklyn, N.Y.
She married
Arthur Stimpson on June 14, 1947, in Baltimore, Md. He died Dec. 18, 1995.
During World War II Mrs. Stimpson lived in New York City, where as a British citizen she served as an espionage agent for the Allied Powers under Sir William Stevenson.
She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Iselin, N.J.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice Fiorello of Port Reading, N.J.; two sons, William Stimpson of Dunellen, N.J., and Peter Stimpson of Kunkeltown, Pa.; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; a brother, John Thomas of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Beatty Gill.
There are no calling hours at Mahar and Son Funeral Home where a memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Penny Rich Smith, pastor of the North Bennington Congregational Church, will officiate.
