Margaret A. Stanchfield
GOSHEN — Margaret Ann “Peg” Stanchfield, 61, died Jan. 25, 2003, at her home.
A private graveside committal service and burial will take place at a later date in the Goshen Community cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the home of the family, 184 Hayes Road in Goshen.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to The Peg Stanchfield Memorial Fund, 184 Hayes Road, Goshen, 05733.

Edward J. Cross Jr. Rites
WHITE CREEK, N.Y. — The funeral service for Edward J. Cross Jr., 46, who died Jan. 27, 2003, was held Wednesday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Demasi officiating.
A reception for friends and family was held at Jermain Hall in White Creek following the service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
Margaret Kent Onion
CASTLETON — Margaret K. Onion, 84, of Castleton, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, in Ashland, KY. Born in Rutland on Dec. 25, 1917, she was the daughter of Prentiss Howard Kent and Gertrude (Horning) Kent. She was educated in Rutland schools and graduated from Rutland High School as valedictorian in 1936. She went on to receive her BA magna cum laude in English literature from Smith College in 1940 as well as an MA in English from the University of Vermont in 1969.
She married
William A. Onion on June 26, 1941, and moved to Castleton in 1947. She served in various public service roles there including: Castleton School Board, Castleton Library trustee, Trustee of Public Funds, Castleton Planning Commission, and Castleton Federated Church Restoration Committee. After her spouse’s death in 1981, Mrs. Onion remained in Castleton until 2001 when her health necessitated a move to Ashland.
Professionally, she worked for publisher Stephen Daye Press in Brattleboro, and later accepted a position as English teacher at Fair Haven (Union) High School in 1957. She became an Associate Professor of English at Castleton State College in 1969, retiring from CSC in 1978. In retirement, she worked as a free-lance journalist and poet, with numerous articles published in the magazine Early American Life, and Vermont Yarns, published in the Rutland Herald Sunday editions from October 1982 through October 1984.
As a member of the New England Association of Teachers of English, she received its Charles Swain Thomas Award in 1988, and Poet of the Year designation in 1992. She was a longtime member of the Castleton Historical Society and a Trustee of the Vermont Historical Society from 1980-1986. She served as Trustee of the Hayes Foundation for Gifted Children of Rutland County, 1981-1992, and of the Fletcher Farm Foundation, 1979-1995. She was also active in the Alumnae Associations of Smith College and Vermont YWCA Camp Hochelaga.
Survivors include her sister Mary Kent (Mrs. Hugh D.) Onion of Rutland; three children: Daniel K. Onion of Vienna, Maine; Carlie E. Banks (Mrs. Stephen C. Banks) of Plano, Texas; and Matthew W. Onion of Ashland, Ky.; five grandchildren: Frederick A. Onion, Amanda K. Onion, Alene M. Onion, William E. Banks, and Thomas I. Banks; and four great grandchildren.

Wilma C. Saltis
CASTLETON — Wilma C. Saltis, 72, of Castleton, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2002, at her summer residence in Wells.
Wilma was born in Whitehall, N.Y., on September 14, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Max and Pauline (Vladyka) Diekel.
Wilma owned and operated the Saltis Home in Castleton, Vt., for many years. She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court of St. Raphael’s and the Auxiliary of the American Legion J. Claire Carmody Post 39 of Poultney. For the past 20 years, she devoted her life to caring for others, running her family farm and raising her eight children.
Her husband, George Saltis, predeceased her in 1983.
Survivors include five sons, George Saltis of Poultney, John Saltis of Hampton, N.Y., Steven (Rocky) Saltis of Poultney, James Saltis of Poultney, Patrick Saltis of Poultney; three daughters, Julie Welch-Rosmus of Poultney, Darlene Miglorie of Rutland, and Sonya Saltis of Castleton; two sisters, and many beautiful grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Church of St. Raphael the Archangel in Poultney with the Rev. Adam J. Krempa, Pastor, officiating.
The Rite of Committal will take place at the family plot of St. Raphael’s Parish cemetery in the spring.

Clark A. Potter
Clark A. Potter, 70, of Rutland, died Dec. 26, 2002, at his home.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.
Frances V. Schubert
WELLS — Frances Viola Schubert, 88, died Dec. 27, 2002, at Glens Falls Hospital.
She was born Nov. 7, 1914, in Haverhill, N.H.
Survivors include a son, James Schubert of Wells, three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Eric Schubert, predeceased her in 2001.
A private funeral service and burial will take place at a later date.

Gloria Jean Hazen
POULTNEY — The funeral service for Gloria Jean Hazen, 61, who died December 25, 2002, will be held on Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven.
Inadvertently omitted from her obituary was the fact that she was predeceased by her mother, Prudence Hazen, in 1999; her father, George A. Hazen Sr., in 1968; and her brother, George A. Hazen Jr., in 1996. A great-granddaughter, Callesta, survives her. u
Roger W. McGrail
WILDER — Roger William McGrail, 75, died Dec. 25, 2002, at Genesis Eldercare Lebanon Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born Jan. 5, 1927, in Pomfret, the son of William and Ruth (Austin) McGrail.
He graduated from Hanover (N.H.) High School.
He married
Carolyn Atwood on Nov. 24, 1954, in Hanover, N.H. She died in 1993. He later married
Elizabeth Willey.
Mr. McGrail worked as a truck driver for Charlie Kelton for 14 years, then Roy Oil, and later became a burner technician for Johnson and Dix, retiring in 1991 as a service manager.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II.
He was a member of American Legion Post 26 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2571, both of White River Junction.
Mr. McGrail enjoyed helping people and frequently used his skills as a woodworker to build things for others. He also enjoyed poetry, camping, fishing and golf.
Survivors include his wife of Wilder; a daughter, Lynne McGrail of Washington, D.C.; a stepdaughter, Rhonda Dyke of Wilder; three stepsons, Robert, Edward and Scott Willey, all of Wilder; two sisters, Gladys Martin of Blairsville, Ga., and Margaret Wheeler of Waterbury; a granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Merrill McGrail, in 1988.
The memorial service will be held Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction. Burial will take place at a later date in Prosper cemetery in Woodstock.
There will be no calling hours.

Barbara A. Cutler
CHESTER — Barbara Ann Cutler, 75, a former resident of Trout River, N.Y., died Dec. 21, 2002, at Springfield Hospital.
She was born Nov. 14, 1927, in Mystic, Conn. She attended school in Mystic.
Mrs. Cutler taught Sunday school at a local Baptist Church in Trout River, N.Y.
She enjoyed crafts and sewing.
Survivors include two sons, Royal Tuthill of Jackson, Mich., and Raymond Tuthill of Connecticut; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held today at 4 p.m. at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Home in Chester. Burial will be private.

Helen T. McGurn
BENNINGTON — Helen T. McGurn, 84, died Dec. 27, 2002, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 17, 1918, in Bennington, the daughter of William and Ellen (Dunn) McGurn.
She graduated from Bennington High School in 1935.
She worked at W.T. Grant Co., Vogue & Vanity and the office of Dr. Schaad. At the time of her retirement, she was working at Camelot Village.
Miss McGurn enjoyed sewing, building doll houses and doll furniture. She also enjoyed bowling and was active in several local bowling leagues.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret Bevis and Mary Mallory; and five brothers, William, John, Richard, Ned and Patrick McGurn who died Dec. 23, 2002.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with a prayer and continue at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. with a Mass. Burial will follow in Park Lawn cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home. The vigil service will be offered Sunday evening.

BENNINGTON — James Robert Wadsworth, 72, died Dec. 27, 2002, at Centers for Living and Rehabilitation.

Anthony F. Cersosimo
BRATTLEBORO — Anthony F. “Tony” Cersosimo, 86, died Dec. 25, 2002, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 12, 1916, in East Hartford, Conn., the son of Dominic and Frances (Russo) Cersosimo.
Survivors include his wife, Pamela (Proctor) Cersosimo of Vernon; a son, Dominic Cersosimo of Vernon; two daughters, Frances Leitz of Newburyport, Mass., and Pamela Cersosimo of Bozeman, Mont.; a brother, Ralph Cersosimo of Hartford, Conn.; four sisters, Catherine Sacerdote and Rose Hodge, both of East Hartford, Conn., Mary Ripalone of Windsor Locks, Conn., and Frances McCain of Lecanto, Fla.; four stepsons, Paul Hardy of Rutland, R. Steven Hardy of Chesterfield, N.H., Scott Hardy of Stratton and Jeffrey Hardy of Vernon; a stepdaughter, Kimberlee Martin of Brattleboro; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and 20 step grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church in Brattleboro. Burial will take place at a later date.
Calling hours will be held Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Ker Westerlund & Fleming Funeral Home in Brattleboro.
