Hugh E. Flack Rites
PROCTORSVILLE — The funeral service for Hugh E. Flack, 91, who died Jan. 8, 2003, was held Friday at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Ludlow with the Rev. William Scherwerts officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Cavendish Village cemetery.
A gathering for family and friends was held at the home of Hugh Flack in Proctorsville after the service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Ludlow.
Elizabeth Gordon
WOODSTOCK — Elizabeth Bartlett Ryan Gordon, 88, died Jan. 9, 2003, at Woodstock Terrace in Woodstock.
She was born Aug. 19, 1914.
Calling hours will be held Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.
Burial will take place at a later date.

LONGBEACH, Calif. — Lisa M. Dubeau, 27, a former resident of Woodstock, Vt., died January 9, 2003, at her home.

VERGENNES — Allen W. Gaines, 79, died Jan. 9, 2003, at Arbors in Shelburne.
He was born May 17, 1923, in Ferrisburgh, the son of Roswell and Josephine (Kelly) Gaines. He graduated from Vergennes High School in 1941.
He worked as a dairy farmer in Ferrisburgh until he sold the farm, and then founded Gaines Insurance Agency in 1962, retiring in 1985.
He was a member of Dorchester Lodge # 1 F&AM in Vergennes, Masonic Order 32nd Degree Mason, past president of Vergennes Rotary Club, and past member of Independent Order Odd Fellow in Vergennes. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Vergennes.
Survivors include four sons, Gary Gaines of Waltham, Theodore Murin and Joe Gaines, both of South Burlington, and Scott Gaines of Vergennes; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his two wives, Ruth (Merrill) Gaines and Ruby (Murin) Gaines; two brothers, Samuel Gaines and Loren Avery; and a grandson.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Vergennes United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Prospect cemetery in Vergennes.
Friends may call Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. A Masonic service will be offered at 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Vergennes United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Vergennes, 05491, or Alzheimer’s Association, Green Mountain Chapter, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier, 05601.

Rose M. Firliet
Rose M. Firliet, 89, of Rutland died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Haven Health Care.
Though she had no children of her own, she is survived by her many nieces and nephews whom she considered her own, Mary Sharp, Ray Cioffi, Christine Spurr, Jim Cioffi, Judy Howland, Ron Cioffi, Dave Cioffi, John Cioffi Jr., Mike “J.J.” Cioffi, Pat Cioffi, Don Romano, John Romano, Bob Romano, Lucille Romano, Gerald Cioffi, Barbara Erickson and Betty Jane Allison, grandnieces, nephews and great-great-grandnieces and nephews.
She was a member of the Sodality of St. Peter’s Church.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Rutland.
Members of the Catholic Daughters of America will meet for prayer services Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
Visiting hours will be held Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Clifford Funeral Home.
Olive P. McWaters
CASTLETON — Olive P. McWaters, 73, of Castleton passed away Saturday, January 11, 2003, at the Haven Health Care Center of Rutland, Vermont.
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, May 22, 1929, she was the daughter of the late George and Olive (Shumway) Pratt.
Mrs. McWaters has been a resident of Castleton, Vt., since 1966, when she moved there from New Haven, Conn.
For several years she managed the Birdseye Camping and Ski Area in Castleton.
Prior to her illness, she was employed by the Fair Haven High School as Secretary to the Principal.
Olive will always be remembered for her positive attitude throughout her illness.
Survivors include two sons, Craig McWaters of Castleton and his companion, Michelle Folger of Granville, N.Y., and Chris McWaters and his wife Kim of Glendale, Arizona; one daughter, Lyn Chartier and her husband, Dave of Holland, Mass.; and five granddaughters, Katharine Alice McWaters of Poultney, Vt., Lacey McWaters of Phoenix, Arizona, Katie Lyn McWaters of Holland, Mass., and Gemma McWaters and Haley McWaters, both of Sydney, Australia.
A Memorial Service will take place Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Castleton Federated Church of Castleton, Vt., with Dr. Norene M. Carter, Pastor, officiating.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Lenny Burke Farm, Box 1837 A, Rutland, Vermont, 05701.

Helen B. Apjohn
BOMOSEEN — Helen B. Apjohn, 91, a former resident of Westport, Conn., died Jan. 14, 2003, at Mountain View Center Genesis ElderCare in Rutland.
She was born Dec. 24, 1911, in Brockton, Mass., the daughter of Henry and Emma Bube.
She graduated from Brockton High School.
She married
Thomas Apjohn in 1933 in Nashua, N.H.
Mrs. Apjohn worked as a secretary at Brockton Gas and Electric, and later at Westport Circuit Court in Connecticut for many years before moving to Lake Bomoseen.
Survivors include a son, Thomas Apjohn of Poultney; a daughter, Hilary Hatch of Benson; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1987, a brother and two sisters.
A private cremation service was held Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society Vermont Division, 100 Dorset St., Suite 12, South Burlington, 05403.

Frederick G. Allen
WEST HAVEN — Frederick George Allen, 68, died Jan. 14, 2003, in New York City.
He was born in Rutland and raised in West Haven.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven.
Florence R. Curtis
The funeral service for Florence R. Curtis, 82, of Rutland, who died Jan. 3, 2003, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home. Burial will take place at a later date in Evergreen cemetery.
Friends may call Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Rosemary Viger Rites
WELLS — The funeral service for Rosemary Viger, 64, who died Jan. 9, 2003, was held Monday at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney with the Rev. James Peterson, pastor of the Baptist Church in Granville, N.Y., officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Wells cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney.
Walter H. Stearns
SPRINGFIELD — Walter H. Stearns, 94, died Jan. 14, 2003, at Springfield Hospital.
He was born Feb. 10, 1908, in Charlestown, N.H., the son of Horace and Claribell (Greenwood) Stearns.
He graduated from Charlestown High School and later attended business school in Brattleboro.
He married
Jean Campbell on Aug. 5, 1938, in Charlestown.
Mr. Stearns worked at Fellows Gear Shaper Co. in Springfield for more than 42 years, retiring in 1970.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Whiting of Brownsville; a sister, Evelyn Snow of Charlestown; two grandsons; and a nephew.
He was predeceased by his wife in 1999; a son, Roger Stearns, who died during the Vietnam War; and a sister, Mildred Stearns.
There will be no services. Mr. Stearns’ body is being donated to the University of Vermont Medical College of Medicine in Burlington.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
John Allen
WESTMINSTER — John Allen, 81, died Jan. 15, 2003, at the Christian Family Circle Church in Westminster.
He was born April 30, 1921, in Bellows Falls, the son of Herbert and Louise (Deslex) Allen.
He attended schools in Bellows Falls.
He married
Dorothy Yuska on May 14, 1948, in Bellows Falls.
Mr. Allen worked in farming, and in 1956, he and his three brothers founded Allen Brothers Inc. He was the pastor of the Christian Family Circle Church for 40 years and co-founder of Camp Blessing in Charlestown, N.H.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in the European Theater.
He was an avid airplane pilot.
Survivors include his wife of Westminster; a daughter, Juanita Oftedahl of Westminster; four sons, Craig Allen of Westminster, Lance Allen of Bellows Falls, Timothy Allen of Walpole, N.H., and Chan Allen of Claremont, N.H.; two brothers, Russell Allen of Westminster and Walter Allen of Bellows Falls; four sisters, Margaret DeFredo of Bellows Falls, Gladys Trombley of Tulsa, Okla., Beatrice Allen of Rockingham and Daisy French of Africa; and 10 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Raymond Allen, William Allen and Frank Allen.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Christian Family Circle Church in Westminster. Burial will follow in Westminster cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.
