Colonel Arthur Maxfield
Colonel Arthur Maxfield (USAF Ret.), 84, of Shelburne, Vt., died Sunday, December 22, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care, the result of a stroke suffered on Saturday. His wife of 56 years, Marilyn, and his six children with their families, were by his side.
Art was born July 9, 1918, in Terre Haute, Ind., the eldest child of Arthur Maxfield and Anna McEwen Maxfield and moved to the St. Louis, Mo., area where he grew up on a farm. In 1940, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served during WWII as crew chief on the B-25 bomber in North Africa, Italy, India and Burma. On returning to the States, he attended Officer Candidate School, graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant. His Commanding Officer always told him he wasn’t officer material, but over a period of 36 years, he worked his way up to the rank of Colonel, indicative of his belief in hard work and a can-do attitude.
As a member of the new USAF, he saw the creation of the Strategic Air Command (SAC), the introduction of the B-47 bomber, the workhorse B-52, and the test flights of the early stealth aircraft. In addition to serving in WWII, he served in the Korean and Viet Nam wars, receiving numerous medals including three Bronze Stars and the Legion of Merit. He retired in 1976 from SAC Headquarters, Offutt AFB, Omaha, Neb.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; one daughter, Sherry Applegate (husband Raymond) and children, Lindsay and Brett; five sons, Timothy (wife Lilia), his children, Christina, Laura, Tonya, Timothy; Lane and children, Tiffany, Andrew, Alexis, Abigail; Kent and children, Caine, Bridgette, Kate, Dana, Sara; Randall (Maj. USAF) (wife Nancy) and son, Taylor; and Shane (Gunnery Sgt. USMC) (wife Laura) and children, Shane II, Lucas and Deanna; and 10 great-grandchildren. Many of the grandchildren’s mothers remain close to the family and were present at his death. He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Keith, and is survived by sisters, Jean Nolte and Kathleen Reiter, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Art loved fishing, camping and the St. Louis Cardinals; bowled with Marilyn on a senior league, and spent hours in his garden. He was a 32nd-degree Mason, member of the Shelburne Optimist Club, American Legion and VFW Post 782. He was himself an Eagle Scout, and was active in Shelburne Boy Scouts with his sons. He continued to work for the family business, Deter Security, until his last day. But his greatest joy in life was always his family. He was our patriarch, our rock, the one we all looked to and depended on. He will be so missed.
A memorial service will be held at the Shelburne Methodist Church on Saturday, December 28 at 11 a.m. Interment will be held following the service in the Shelburne cemetery weather permitting. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Green Mountain Youth Conservation Camp, in care of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Dept., Waterbury, Vt.; or to the Shelburne Methodist Church.
