Hazel Hazelton
BRATTLEBORO — Hazel C. Hazelton, 102, of East Dummerston, died Dec. 23, 2002, at Eden Park Nursing Home.
She was born Nov. 10, 1900, in Westminster, the daughter of Prentiss and Lizzie (Morse) Carr.
She attended school in Williamsville and the Brattleboro Hospital School of Nursing.
She married
Merton Hazelton on Sept. 26, 1924, in West Brattleboro. He died in 1980.
Mrs. Hazelton and her husband owned and operated their own farm. They were known for their strawberries and apples. In earlier years, she had worked in nursing for the Red Cross.
She was a member of the Evening Star Grange for more than 75 years and active with the Dummerston Center Women’s Association for many years.
She enjoyed cooking and baking.
Survivors include a son, Donald Hazelton of Dummerston; two daughters, Mary Bolster and Carol Bessett, both of Dummerston; a sister, Harriet Robinson of Brattleboro; 15 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by five brothers and one sister.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro with the Rev. William Warriner, pastor of Dummerston Center Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will take place in Dummerston Center cemetery at a later date.
There will be no calling hours.

Julia Lominski Rites
BENNINGTON — The funeral Mass for Julia Lominski, who died Dec. 18, 2002, was celebrated Monday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church with the Rev. Vincent Coppola, associate pastor of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, and the Rev. David Raymond, pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Cheshire, Mass., concelebrating. Deacon Robert Hitter of Cheshire, Mass., assisted. Burial followed in Park Lawn cemetery.
Organist was Donald McMahon and soloist was Monica Murray.
Bearers were Edward Kulas Jr., Kristopher Kulas, Jonathan Rysz, Bruce Richardson, Ralph Perez and George Krawczyk.
A prayer service was offered at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home by the Rev. Howard prior to the funeral Mass.
A wake service was offered Sunday afternoon by the Rev. Coppola.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
Sophie Lafricain
HANCOCK — Sophie Lafricain, 101, died Dec. 22, 2002, at Johnson’s Care Home in Hancock.
She was born Sept. 15, 1901, in Lublin, Poland, and came to New York City in 1912.
She and her second husband moved to Granville in 1944, where they established and operated Vermont Wood Specialties for 30 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Lillian Garfinkel of New Jersey; two sons, Harold Mishkit of Burlington and Melvin Mishkit of Rochester; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Solomon Mishkit; her second husband, Milton Lafricain; one grandchild; a sister, and a brother, Sam.
Burial and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Johnson’s Care Home or a favorite charity.

Jeanne M. Langlois
MIDDLEBURY — Jeanne Marie Langlois, 88, died Dec. 23, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
She was born March 27, 1914, in St. Remi, Canada, the daughter of Ernest and Maderise (Boyer) Malzac.
She later moved to Middlebury where she worked at Van Raalte in Middlebury, Middlebury College and Middlebury Freeze Locker.
Mrs. Langlois attended St. Mary’s Church.
She enjoyed playing cards, traveling and dancing.
Survivors include two sons, John Langlois of Belgium and Paul Langlois of Burlington; two daughters, Claire Bishop of Bristol and Helen Gilman of White River Junction; two sisters, Madeline Neuhoff and Claire Gauthier; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harve Langlois, in 1972.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury.

Ronald J. Knef
MIDDLEBURY — Ronald Jay Knef, 69, died Dec. 21, 2002, with cancer.
He was born Feb. 14, 1933, in East Orange, N.J., the son of Frances and Arthur Knef.
He worked for Simmonds Precision in Vergennes for 15 years before self-contracting for himself. He retired in 1995.
He was a member of the Middlebury Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus, and past president of Middlebury Union High School Football Booster Club.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Lorraine Knef; a son, Gary Knef of Powell, Ohio; a daughter, Lisa Knef of Westford; two grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Knef of Naples, Fla.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury.
Calling hours will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury.

Nancy P. O’Bryan
ADDISON — Nancy P. O’Bryan, 72, died Dec. 23, 2002, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.
She was born April 29, 1930, in Middlebury, the daughter of Robert and Edna (Sweetser) Partch.
She married
Loren O’Bryan on May 17, 1952, in Vergennes.
Mrs. O’Bryan worked at Vergennes Union High School and Addison School as a secretary for many years.
She was a member of Vergennes Congregational Church, and the Eastern Star in Vergennes, Bristol and Middlebury.
Survivors include her husband of Addison; three sons, Patrick O’Bryan of Grantham, N.H., Steven O’Bryan and Greg O’Bryan, both of Panton; two daughters, Diane Tracy of Panton and Joanne O’Bryan of Middlebury; and eight grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Vergennes Congregational Church. Burial will take place in Prospect cemetery in Vergennes at a later date.
There will be no calling hours.

William W. Williams
MIDDLE GRANVILLE, N.Y. — William W. Williams, 89, died Dec. 22, 2002, at Hallmark Nursing Centre.
He was born June 7, 1913, in Granville, the son of David and Elizabeth (Williams) Williams.
He married
Ruth Wrisley on Aug. 2, 1958.
Mr. Williams worked as a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Poultney, Vt., and also operated a slate quarry on his property.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1653 in Granville and the American Legion. He was also a member of Poultney Masonic Lodge, Penrhyn Fire Department and the Adirondack Wood Carvers Association. He volunteered at the Mettowee Valley Slate Museum.
Survivors include his wife; two nieces; and several grandnieces.
The funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Robert M. King Funeral Home in Granville with the Rev. Lawrence Switzer officiating. Burial will take place in North Elba cemetery at a later date.
Friends may call today from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Margaret McNelley
GRANVILLE, N.Y. — Margaret McNelley, 95, died Dec. 22, 2002, at Indian River Nursing Home.

Helen White
GRANVILLE, N.Y. — A memorial service with Holy Eucharist for Helen White, who died Dec. 20, 2002, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Granville.

Gloria Jean Hazen
POULTNEY — Gloria Jean Hazen, age 61, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Gloria was born in Crown Point, N.Y., on October 31, 1941. She was the daughter of George Allen and N. Prudence (Taylor) Hazen Sr. She was graduated from Hartford High School, Class of 1960. Following graduation she began her career as an operator for New England Telephone. She also worked in the Engineering-Order Drawing as well as a General Clerk for New England Telephone. She retired from the telephone company in 1992 after more than 32 years of service. She has been a resident of Poultney since 1992, moving here from North Clarendon.
She was a member of Good Will Rebekah Lodge #12, where she had served as Vice Grand, Noble Grand, Secretary and District Deputy President. She also belonged to The American Legion, Ladies Auxiliary Unit #49 in Fair Haven. She was a member of the United Church of West Rutland, where she had taught Sunday School and had served as Sunday School Superintendent. She enjoyed Sewing, Knitting, Crocheting, Crafts and Reading. She volunteered at the Council on Aging and had been a driver for Meals on Wheels. She also had worked part-time at Wal-Mart from 2001 until the present.
Surviving is her brother, James Everett Hazen of Castleton; four nieces, Michelle Swain of Castleton, Chris Hopkins of Birmingham, Ala., Sheila Hazen-Tracy of Castleton and Annmarie Balliet of Charleston, S.C.; two nephews, Mark Hazen of Poultney and Kevin Hazen of Castleton; three Grand Nieces, Danielle, Crystal and Calise, and four Grand Nephews, Matthew, Allen, Joshua and Steven also survive her.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, December 30, 2002, at 10 a.m. at The Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven. The Rev. Gordon Naser, Pastor of The United Church of West Rutland, will officiate. Cremation will follow the service. A private graveside committal service and burial will take place at a later date in the family lot at West Hartford cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, December 29, 2002, from 1 to 4p.m.
