Robert Frederick August

MANCHESTER — Robert F. August, age 91, a resident of Manchester and Dorset, Vt., since 1963, formerly of South Orange and Morristown, N.J., died peacefully of natural causes December 18, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center. He was born June 24, 1911, in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Frederick George and Dorothea (Rasmussen) August. He graduated from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1931 as a Chemical Engineer. He served in the New York National Guard during World War II. He married Edith Champion (Brown) in South Orange, N.J., in January 1940.

He joined Triangle Ink and Color Company in 1931. The firm was founded by his father in 1922. During a thirty-year career with that firm, he pioneered development of specialty inks for the U.S. Mint, U.S. Post Office, and early magnetic inks for use by the New York Stock Exchange. He served as President of the National Printing Ink Makers Association.

After selling his business in 1962, Mr. and Mrs. August moved to Manchester, Vt., and then to Dorset in 1973. During that time he managed the Ben-Mont Ink plant in Bennington, Vt., turning that then captive facility for the gift wrap mill into a profit center for the company, supplying custom inks to General Foods in Saratoga Springs, among others.

In the late 1960’s he joined his wife at Snare Associates-Dorset Village Properties, a real estate agency in Dorset. He and Edith August were responsible for introducing George M. Wallace, who now owns the firm, to the Save Dorset Hollow effort. With the Augusts and others, Wallace formed the Dorset Hollow Corporation in 1968, preventing that rural area of Dorset from becoming the largest ski area in southern Vermont. Aspects of that early ecological survey and land-use plan were referenced in Vermont’s Act 250 and lands protection in the State of Hawaii.

Robert was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion in South Orange, N.J., and the United Congregational Church of Dorset and East Rupert where he served in the Church Cabinet for its Bicentennial and met the second Mrs. August at choir rehearsal.

Mr. August was an accomplished musician, sportsman and cook. He played violin and conducted a movie palace pit orchestra in the late 1920s. He hunted pheasant with Babe Ruth and was featured in the New York Times Sunday Magazine by Craig Claiborne for his barbecue prowess. Accomplishments few would know from this modest man.

He was predeceased by Edith in 1975 and a sister, Dorothy (August Avery) in 1997. In 1984 he was remarried to Anne (Morgan) August, now of Shelburne, Vt.

His first wife had two daughters and a son who survive him: Melinda August Zancan of Venice, Italy, Suzanne Brown August of New York, N.Y.; and R. Diedrich August of Dorset, Vt. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Renzo Zancan; two grandchildren, Sabrina Brewster Zancan of New York, N.Y., and Shepard Brewster Zancan of Venice, Italy. His first great-grandchild, Zaccaria Zancan was born in Venice a month ago. He gloried in that knowledge.

Since 2000, Robert was a residence of Equinox Terrace, Manchester, Vt., where he flourished with independence and thoughtful care.

His family is celebrating his life privately. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date for June 2003. In memory of Robert, memorial gifts may be made to Dorset Nursing Association, P.O. Box 549, Dorset, Vt., 05251.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Brewster Funeral Service, a Selected Independent Funeral Home, in Manchester.
