Loretta C. Paquette

MIDDLEBURY — Loretta Cecile Paquette died unexpectedly Thursday, December 12, 2002, in the loving arms of her husband. She was born May 5, 1920, in North Hero, the seventh of eight children of Gilbert and Emma (Paquette) Paquette.

Loretta attended school in North Hero and graduated from Castleton High, N.Y. She was later employed by Grand Isle Extension Service where she met her husband. Loretta and Lucien D. Paquette were married on a wintry February 6, 1945, in St. Rose of Lima Church in So. Hero.

Loretta’s greatest love was her husband of nearly 58 years, her 12 children and 31 grandchildren, who affectionately caller her MEMA, her church and St. Mary’s School where 11 of the children attended before the school closed. She enjoyed being involved with the church and school.

Needless to say, with 12 children during the first 15 years of marriage, Loretta had to be an organizer and planner, and she was that. The children’s clean clothes were lined up the night before along the wall in the order in which they put them on. Those were the days when everything had to be ironed and she did that every evening. In later years Loretta kept three gallon jars of cookies on the shelf for the children and grandchildren as they came to visit. On Thursday, there were 12 cookies left, one for each of the children, the last of MEMA’s cookies.

Loretta liked fishing, dancing, bingo and miniature golf where she usually won over Lucien. She got a thrill at being the last couple on the floor at Field Days Gala in the years married elimination.

Loretta was a loving, caring wife, mother and grandmother, just a great person!!!

Loretta is survived by her husband, Lucien D. Paquette, her children and grandchildren, Lucien Dennis and Mary Paquette, Kenny, Damien and Jon; David and Janice Phelps, Michael, Christopher, Jessica and Jamie; Stephen Paquette and friend Sara Devries, Middlebury; Dr. Wm. and Judith Mercier, Kimberley, Amanda, Courtney and Willie; Scott and Barbara Logan, Raymond IV, Christopher, Courtney, Kelli and Kayla, Massachusetts; Donald and Nancy Bordner, Florida; Francis and Lorraine Paquette, Lisa, Jason, Ryan and Krista; Michael and Sheryl Paquette, Danny, Brian and Tyler Cornwall: Gary and Sandra Paquette, Torrey and Kelsey, Morrisville; Thomas and Terry Paquette, Sara and Allyson, Rochester, Vt.; David Paquette, California; Rene and Selena Paquette, Adam, Heather, Aaron, Haley and Hannah, Addison. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren and her brother, Gilbert and Helen Paquette, Burlington.

Loretta was predeceased by her sisters and brothers, Lila, Ada, Blanche, Fay, Donald and Sidney.

At Loretta’s request there will be no calling hours. A Christian Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, December 16, 2 p.m., St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Middlebury with Father Justin Baker officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Loretta’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s School, 86 Shannon St., Middlebury, or St. Mary’s Church, 326 College St., Middlebury, 05753.

Arrangements are by Sanderson Funeral Service, Middlebury.
