Joan E. Whittington
Joan E. Coughlin Whittington, 48, of Rutland, died Dec. 2, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
She was born June 29, 1954, in Pittsfield, Mass., the daughter of James and Marilyn (McMahon) Coughlin.
She graduated from Taconic (Mass.) High School in 1972, summa cum laude from Smith College in 1976 and from Berkshire Community College in 1991 as a registered nurse.
She worked for Austin Riggs in Stockbridge, Mass., and after moving to Rutland in 1993, worked at Spring Lake Ranch in Cuttingsville and most recently as a visiting nurse in the Rutland area.
Mrs. Whittington was a U.S. Army veteran.
She enjoyed skiing and antiquing.
Survivors include her father of Pittsfield, Mass.; a son, Joseph Whittington of Rutland; a daughter, Bridget Whittington of DeQuincy, La.; a brother, Peter Coughlin of Pittsfield, Mass.; three sisters, Marilyn Hickey and Ellen Lomaglio, both of Pittsfield, Mass., and Karen Tibbetts of Lenox, Mass.; and a grandson.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10:15 a.m. at the Devanny-Condron Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Mass., with a prayer. It will continue at St. Francis Xavier Church with a Mass at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Bombardier, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Joseph’s cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Clifford H. Offensend
WALLINGFORD — Mr. Clifford Harvey Offensend, 91, a former resident of Pawlett and Fair Haven, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at the Mountain View Center Genesis Eldercare in Rutland, Vermont after a long illness. Mr. Offensend was born on August 5, 1911, in West Haven, Vermont, the son of the late Preserved Samuel Offensend and Ida May (Jakeway) Offensend. He attended school in Fair Haven and as a young schoolboy he started his employment for the Flory and Welch meat and grocery market on River Street in Fair Haven. He met his wife, Dorothy Backus and they were married
at the First Baptist Church in Fair Haven on October 20, 1935, and they have celebrated sixty-seven years of marriage.
After various other employments, Mr. Offensend eventually became employed for the J.K. Adams Woodworking Company in South Dorset, Vt., retiring as Superintendent in 1976, after twenty years of employment.
Clifford was a life long member of the First Baptist Church of Fair Haven, and he was a member of the Masonic Order for over fifty years. He was raised in the Evening Flower Lodge in Pawlett, Vt., where he served as Secretary of the Lodge for several years, transferring his membership to the Eureka Lodge #75, F&AM of Fair Haven. He was also a member of the Pawlett and Fair Haven Historical Societies, serving on the Board of Directors for both organizations and was given the status of Trustee Emeritus for the Pawlett Historical Society. Other memberships include the Foote Family Association of America, former memberships include the New England Antique Tool Collectors, the Modern Woodmen of America, Camp 10244 of Wells, Vt. He also held the distinction of Soloist with the Poultney Welsh Male Chorus.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Offensend of Wallingford; his two daughters, Nancy Houghton and her husband, Lee of Wallingford, Jean Bernick and her husband, George of Boise, Idaho; his brother, David Offensend of Charlotte, Vt.; his three grandsons, Christopher Houghton, Kurtiss Houghton and Timothy Bernick, his five great-grandsons; and he is also survived by a niece and nephew. He was predeceased by his brother, Stanley Offensend, who died in 1987.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Fair Haven. Officiating will be the Rev. Donald Jones of West Pawlett and Rev. Donald Pepper, Pastor of the Welsh Presbyterian Church in Poultney. Burial will be at a later date in Cedar Grove cemetery in Fair Haven.
Visiting Hours will be on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 No. Main Street, Fair Haven.

Raymond B. Reynolds Jr. Rites
MENDON — The funeral service for Raymond B. Reynolds Jr., 57, who died Dec. 1, 2002, was held Wednesday at the Clifford Funeral Home.
The Rev. Richard Tinney, pastor of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven, officiated.
American Legion Post 31 of Rutland and the U.S. Marine Corps. of Albany, N.Y., provided military honors. Peter Doucet of the U.S. Marine Corps. made the flag presentation.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
Barbara J. Connelly Rites
WALLINGFORD — The funeral Mass for Barbara Joan Connelly, 82, who died Nov. 22, 2002, was celebrated Thursday at St. Patrick’s Church in Wallingford.
The Rev. Douglas Hawkins of the Annunciation Church in Ludlow officiated.
Burial will take place at a later date in Mount Olivet cemetery in Saginaw, Mich.
Organist was James Cassarino and vocalist was Elise Bushey Cassarino.

Mary Sullivan Rites
BOMOSEEN — The funeral Mass for Mary “Betty” Sullivan, 87, who died Dec. 1, 2002, was celebrated Thursday at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Castleton.
The Rev. Charles Danielson, parish priest, officiated. Burial will take place at a later date in Hillside cemetery in Castleton.
Bearers were Kevin Roth, Brendan Sullivan, Brian Egan and Joseph Egan.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Ducharme Funeral Home in Castleton.
Elma S. Kidder
ROCHESTER — Elma S. Kidder, 95, died Dec. 5, 2002, at the Johnson Care Home in Hancock.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Alfred S. Baier
MANCHESTER — Alfred S. Baier (formerly Buyer), 78, died Nov. 28, 2002.
He was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Lynn, Mass., the son of Max and Celia Buyer.
He graduated from Boston University.
Mr. Baier owned and operated an advertising agency, Buyer Advertising, in the greater Boston area for many years. After his retirement, he moved to Manchester in 1986 where he became established as a pipe-maker and instructor in the art of pipe-carving, serving an international clientele.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II aboard the USS Oakland.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Baier; a son, Charles Buyer of Sharon, Mass.; two daughters, Ann Toll of Plainville, Mass., and Marion Buyer-Smith of Norwood, Mass.; a sister, Frances Weinberg of Saugus, Mass.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters and a brother.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Manchester Health Services and Hospice of Bennington County.
Louis V. Andreoli Jr.
WALPOLE, N.H. — Louis V. Andreoli Jr., 57, died Dec. 1, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
He was born May 9, 1945, in Springfield, Mass., the son of Louis and Enes (Alissi) Andreoli.
He graduated from Agawam High School in Agawam, Mass., in 1963, from the University of Massachusetts in 1967 and from Dartmouth College in 1973.
He married
Antonia Zerra on July 8, 1967, in Agawam, Mass.
Mr. Andreoli worked as a social studies teacher and department head at Fall Mountain Regional High School in Langdon, N.H., for 28 years. He was a real estate broker for more than 30 years and the owner of Galloway Real Estate in Walpole, N.H. He was also a partner in Galloway Tour Services in Walpole, N.H.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lisa Andreoli of Walpole, N.H., and Allegra Carignan of Brattleboro, Vt.; a brother, Don Andreoli of Feeding Hills, Mass.; an uncle and aunt; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private Mass and burial will take place at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Walpole Town Hall.

Michael J. Valuk
NASHUA, N.H. — Michael J. Valuk, 53, a former resident of Springfield, Vt., died Dec. 4, 2002, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Mass.
He was born March 2, 1949, in New Britain, Conn., the son of Frank and Mary (Garro) Valuk Sr.
He graduated from Columbia College, Columbia University in New York City in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree, and from the University of Hartford, School of Business and Public Administration in Hartford, Conn., in 1974 with a master’s degree.
He married
Janet Erickson on Aug. 15, 1978.
Mr. Valuk was president of the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce from 1985 to 2001. He was also a town manager in Salem for several years and town manager in Springfield, Vt., for many years.
He was a member of the Water Supply Task Force for Southern New Hampshire, and a founding member of the City of Nashua Emergency Planning Committee for Hazardous Materials.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a medic.
Mr. Valuk served as a baseball coach and assistant basketball coach, and was a Boy Scout volunteer and merit badge counselor.
Survivors include his wife, and two sons, Eric Valuk and Matthew Valuk of Nashua; three brothers, Frank Valuk Jr. of San Antonio, Texas, Robert Valuk of Wakefield, R.I., and Daniel Valuk of Kensington, Conn.; 11 nieces and nephews, three grandnieces and grandnephews; and several aunts and uncles.
He was predeceased by his parents.
Calling hours will be held Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Nashua. The memorial service will follow at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private.

SPRINGFIELD — The graveside service for David G. Lucius, 62, who died Dec 1, 2002, was held Thursday in Oakland cemetery in Springfield with the Rev. John Martens of Chester officiating.

BENNINGTON — The funeral service for Ethel May Bugbee, who died Nov. 27, 2002, was held Thursday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
The Rev. Mary Lee Clark, pastor of the Second Congregational Church, officiated. Burial followed in Park Lawn cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

EAST SHOREHAM — The funeral service for Lee A. Platt, 86, who died Nov. 27, 2002, will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
A private burial will take place at a later date in East Shoreham cemetery.
Friends may call Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
