C. Lynn Wood Jr. Rites
BENNINGTON — The funeral service for C. Lynn Wood Jr., who died Nov. 20, 2002, was held Monday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Penny Hawkins of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church officiating. Burial followed in Park Lawn cemetery.
American Legion Post 13 provided military honors. Philip Young and Joseph Krawczyk Sr. presented the flag to Mr. Wood’s son, Charles Wood III. Taps were sounded by Maurice Rancourt.
Bearers were Richard Rossmeissl, Christopher Ward, Alan LeRay and John LeRay.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
Dorothy L. McHenry
GRANVILLE, N.Y. — Dorothy L. McHenry, 74, died Nov. 24, 2002, at Glens Falls Hospital.
She was born July 5, 1928, in Granville, the daughter of William and Anna (Kniess) Thomas.
She graduated from Granville High School and Green Mountain College in 1949. She later attended Adirondack Community College.
She married
Kevin McHenry on Aug. 22, 1954, in Granville.
Mrs. McHenry was a professional organist in the area, serving at Trinity Episcopal Church in Wells for 12 years, the United Church of Dorset in Dorset for 10 years, the Granville United Methodist Church for 30 years and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Granville for 40 years. She also taught piano and organ lessons to many area children for many years.
She was a member of Sylvan Star-Skenesborough Chapter 122, Order of Eastern Star of the State of New York in Granville, serving as matron, secretary, the chapter musician, and trustee of the chapter. She was also a member of Evergreen Chapter 63 Order of the Eastern Star of the State of Vermont in Poultney, Vt., and served as chapter organist. She served as a Girl Scout leader, and started the Girl Scout Sunday Ecumenical Services for the Adirondack Council. She was a member of the Fellowship of the Methodist Church, International Order of the Eastern Star and St. David’s Society.
Mrs. McHenry received two religious awards for her many years of service to scouting: the Catholic Pelican Award through the Catholic Church and the God and Service Certificate through the Adirondack Girl Scout Council in Glens Falls.
Survivors include a daughter, Christine Sweeney of Granville, and several cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband.
The memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. at the Granville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Martin Evans Jones, pastor, officiating. The Rev. Thomas Zelker, pastor of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church of Granville, and the Rev. Martin Fisher, Mrs. McHenry’s cousin, will assist in the service.
A reception will be held in the church hall following the service.
There will be no calling hours.

Fred C. Baker
SARANAC, N.Y. — Fred Carl Baker, 63, died Nov. 22, 2002, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.
He was born July 28, 1939, in Granville, the son of Edward and Rose (Viau) Baker.
He graduated from high school in Granville in 1957 and attended Plattsburgh Teacher’s College.
Mr. Baker worked as a music teacher for band and instrumental at Saranac Lake High School, retiring in 1999.
He was the honorary conductor of Scenic Rail in Saranac.
He served in the U.S. Army band in Germany during the Army of Occupation.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; a daughter, Kristin Au of San Diego, Calif.; a son, Carl Baker of San Francisco, Calif.; a grandson; a sister, Joyce Baker of Pawlet, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father in 1992; by his mother in 1996; and by a brother, William McCabe, in November 2002.
The memorial service will be held today at 1:30 p.m. at the train depot in Saranac.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert M. King Funeral Home in Granville.
Florence Emma Balcom
HAGUE, N.Y. — Florence Emma Balcom Smith, 100, died Nov. 21, 2002, at Hallmark Nursing Centre in North Granville.
She was born on July 8, 1902, in Hague, the daughter of Leroy and Edna (Rising) Balcom.
She was commended and honored as the Senior Citizen of the Year in 1999.
Survivors include two nieces, Iola McCullough of Rutland, Vt., and Lenore Smith of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a nephew, Leroy Balcom of Dunnellon, Fla.; and many great-nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Smith.
The funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at Blessed Sacrament Church of Hague with the Rev. George Fleming officiating. Burial followed in Old Hague cemetery.

Phyllis C. Goodwin
SUDBURY, Mass. — Phyllis C. Goodwin, 75, a former resident of Charlemont, died Nov. 22, 2002.
She was born March 25, 1927, in Readsboro, Vt., the daughter of Cyrus and Jessie (Carroll) Liese.
Survivors include a son, Jeffrey Goodwin of Rutland, Vt.; a daughter, the Rev. Susan Goodwin of Farmington, N.H.; and a granddaughter.
She was predeceased by her husband, Van Goodwin.
The memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Duckett-J.S. Waterman and Sons Funeral Home in Sudbury. A private burial will take place in Leavitt cemetery in Charlemont.

Veda W. Dawley
BRIDGEWATER — Veda W. Dawley, 85, died Nov. 26, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
She was born Sept. 4, 1917, in Bridgewater, the daughter of Gorton and Rena (Perron) Westcot.
She attended school in Bridgewater Center.
She married
Raymond Dawley on June 30, 1962.
Mrs. Dawley worked as a weaver at the Bridgewater Woolen Mill for 30 years.
She was a member of the Bridgewater Congregational Church and American Legion Auxiliary Post 26 in White River Junction.
She was an avid crocheter and knitter.
Survivors include her husband of Bridgewater; a daughter, Joyce Olmstead of Woodstock; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Bessie Lumbra of New Hampshire, Maxine Fitzgerald of Massachusetts, Hope Gabbord of Ohio and Caroline Smith of Florida; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Leo Westcot in 1978, Daniel Westcot in 1980 and Alan Westcot in 1991; and a sister, Blanche Astbury in 1974.
The graveside service will be held at a later date in Mount Pleasant cemetery in Bridgewater.
There will be no calling hours.

Paulina M. Young
WOODSTOCK — Paulina M. Young, 76, died Nov. 26, 2002, at her home.
She was born Dec. 5, 1925, in Dorchester, Mass., the daughter of Edward and Kathryn Flynn.
She attended Dorchester High School for Girls and graduated from Framingham State Teacher’s College in 1947.
She married
Thomas Young on June 17, 1952. He died in 1996.
She taught school for several years, and later started Sew What?, a fabric shop, and also the Young Cheese Shop with her husband, retiring in 1986.
Mrs. Young was a communicant of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Woodstock and a longtime member of St. Anne’s Club.
She was an avid swimmer, enjoyed swimming aerobics and taught water safety for the Red Cross for many years. She was also an avid skier.
Survivors include three sons, Tracy of Hanover, N.H., Gregory of Meriden, N.H., and Terrence of Palm Springs, Calif.; three daughters, Kathryn Young-Lasell of Charlotte, N.C., Pamela Young-Abundiz of San Diego, Calif., and Lisa Young of Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Carol Treiber of Harwood, Md., and Marilyn Sweeney of Gurnee, Ill.
She was predeceased by a sister, Marjorie.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Woodstock.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Elmer A. Emery
WOODSTOCK — Elmer A. Emery, 93, died Nov. 26, 2002, at Peabody Home in Franklin, N.H.
He was born Feb. 17, 1909, in Pomfret, the son of Henry and May (Curtis) Emery.
He attended high school in Woodstock.
He worked at Smith’s and Mitchell’s clothing stores, purchasing the latter in the 1940s and changing the name to Emery’s Men’s Wear in Woodstock.
He was an accomplished tailor, retiring in the early 1970s. Mr. Emery later worked in the maintenance shop at the Woodstock Inn for many years.
Mr. Emery taught himself to play the saxophone, and played with Chick Welles’ band several nights a week during the 1930s and ’40s.
He was one of the first members of Grey Camp, a private fishing camp in Barnard, and a longtime member of the Woodstock Rotary Club. He was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in 1989.
He was an avid skier.
Survivors include two daughters, Maryann Allcroft of West Hartford, Conn., and Elizabeth Frost of East Andover, N.H.; a son, H. Gilson Emery of Montgomery, Ala.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and an adopted daughter, Bonnie Carr of Bridgewater.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Gilson) Emery, in 1978.
The memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.
