Helen D. Godfrey
Helen D. Godfrey, 91, died Nov. 24, 2002, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Tossing Funeral Home.
Rosann L. Smith
DORSET — Rosann Lipe Foote Smith, 95, died Nov. 21, 2002, at her home in Dorset.
She was born March 5, 1907, in Canajoharie, N.Y., the daughter of Walter and Christina Lipe.
She was the widow of Robert M. Smith and Ray P. Foote.
A graduate of Smith College, Mrs. Smith studied at Oxford University, then returned to the United States, where she married
Mr. Foote. The Footes then went back to London until 1938 and lived in Englewood, N.J., until they moved to Dorset in 1961.
Following Mr. Foote’s death in 1971, she married
Robert M. Smith of Arlington. Mr. Smith died in 1997.
Throughout her adult life, Mrs. Smith was active in community affairs. She served as a volunteer leader in the American Red Cross for many years. The Garden Clubs of America, the Dorset Nursing Association and the Southern Vermont Art Center were among her many interests.
She is survived by her three sons, Ray P. Foote Jr. of Greenwich, Conn., Jonathan L. Foote of Livingston, Mont., and Geoffrey G. Foote of Ovando, Mont.; a daughter, Ann Smith of Wickenberg, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
No services are scheduled at this time.

Donald E. Gerity
BENNINGTON — Donald E. Gerity, 65, a former longtime resident of Fort Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Fla., died Nov. 24, 2002, at the Vermont Veterans Home following a brief illness.
He was born in Bennington, Oct. 31, 1937, the son of Earl J. Gerity Sr., and Eva (Waters) Gerity. He received his education in Bennington schools.
Mr. Gerity enlisted in the U.S. Navy Nov. 21, 1957. He was honorably discharged Aug. 4, 1959.
He was self-employed for many years as a painter, repairman and maintenance director. He worked at Prospect Mountain Ski Area in Vermont and later at various housing complexes in the Fort Lauderdale area.
He married
Shirley Percey of Bennington. She died in 1987.
He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 1861, in Bennington and a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1332 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1233.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include three sons, Kevin Gerity of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Stephen Gerity and Randy Gerity, both of Winder, Ga.; four brothers, Frank Gerity of Beaumont, Texas, and Douglas Gerity , Robert Gerity and Earl J. Gerity Jr., all of Bennington; a granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Penny Rich Smith, pastor of the North Bennington Congregational Church, officiating. A private burial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 4 p.m. until the time of the service. Members of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 1861, will meet at the funeral home at 5:30 p.m. to conduct their service.

Donn W. Pelsue
BENNINGTON — Donn Wilbur Pelsue, 68, died Nov. 22, 2002, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born in Ravenna, Ohio, on March 3, 1934, the son of Ivor and Eleanor (Thomas) Pelsue Sr. He was a 1954 graduate of Bennington.
He had worked as a tool-and-die maker most of his life at machine shops in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Vermont, including the former Stanley Tools Plant in Shaftsbury. Mr. Pelsue had also worked as a security guard at Mack Molding in Arlington and at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass.
An avid hunter, he was a longtime member and past president of the Hale Mountain Rod and Gun Club in Shaftsbury. He played the tuba throughout his life and had played in many area bands, including one in Cambridge, N.Y., the Hoosick Falls Band and the American Legion Post 13 band in Bennington.
He attended the Missionary Alliance Church for many years.
Survivors include a brother, Ivor Pelsue Jr. of Syracuse, N.Y.; two sisters, Margery Gregory and Janet Gregory, both of Sudbury; two aunts; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Edwin Blue, pastor of the Missionary Alliance Church, officiating. A reception will follow. Private burial will take place in Park Lawn cemetery.

Frances A. Golec
BELLOWS FALLS — Frances A. Golec, 85, died Nov. 23, 2002, at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, N.H.
She was born Oct. 4, 1917, in Florence, the daughter of Vincent and Kunagunda A. (Weigloski) Godrick. Mrs. Golec attended schools in Florence and Pittsford.
She married
Peter T. Golec on Jan. 16, 1943. He died in 1981.
She worked as a domestic in Rutland and at the Superset Brush Co. in Bellows Falls.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Bellows Falls and the Altar Rosary Society, and was a former member of St. Theresa Society.
Survivors include two sons, Peter Golec of Saxtons River and Stanley Golec of Bellows Falls; five daughters, Jane Golec of Bellows Falls, Frances Thibault of Alstead, N.H., Catherine Poitras of Gilford, N.H., Theresa Szklennik of Boiling Springs, S.C., and Mary Trombly of Springfield; four sisters, Stephanie Giza, Helen Kusina and Stella Godrick, all of Rutland, and Mary Simpson of East Lansing, Mich.; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Chester Godrick; and a sister, Jennie Godrick.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Felix Reczek Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Bellows Falls. Burial in Sacred Heart cemetery in Westminster will follow.
Friends may call Tuesday at the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m.

Ruth B. Hungerford
BETHEL — Ruth Barbara Hungerford, 89, died Nov. 24, 2002, at the Mayo Nursing Home in Northfield.
She was born April 22, 1913, in Brockton, Mass., the daughter of Florence (Welch) and Roy Kellerman.
She graduated from Northfield Seminary in 1929. She attended Simmons College and Salter Secretarial School.
She helped her father in his business until moving to Bethel in the early 1940s. She was a secretary for Bethel Mills and Valley Motor Sales in Bethel. She married
Donald R. Hungerford of Bethel on March 16, 1949. He died in 1988.
She was a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Bethel and held many other offices in the order throughout her years of membership.
She was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Bethel and the Ladies Fellowship. She was an active volunteer and served on several local committees for many years. She was well known for her flower gardens and was a member of the local garden club.
She enjoyed sewing, rug braiding and hooking, vegetable gardening and birdwatching.
Survivors include cousins Richard Kellerman and Shirley McBain of Florida, and nieces Gertrude Denison of Randolph Center and Frances Rowell.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at the United Church in Bethel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Clair Bamberg officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview cemetery in Bethel.

Alice C. Gerrish
HINSDALE, N.H. — Alice Cecilia Gerrish, 82, died Nov. 22, 2002, at Brattleboro (Vt.) Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Worcester, Mass., Nov. 21, 1920, the daughter of William and Ellen (Lundblad) Brunell. Her mother died at an early age and she was raised by her stepmother, Elizabeth M. (McCook) Brunell. She attended school in Guilford, Vt.
For many years she assisted her husband in the operation of Ed’s Diner on Canal Street in Brattleboro, Vt., keeping the books for the business and helping with the cooking. She was a waitress for several years at Railroad Diner, and worked for Halifax Electric Co-Operative and at the Holstein-Friesian Association.
She enjoyed flowers, gardening and crocheting, and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. She was also known for her cooking.
Her first husband, Donald Lenois, died in 1974.
She married
Bartley Gerrish on May 11, 1981, in Hinsdale. He died on Feb. 13, 2002.
Survivors include two sons, Francis Lenois of Guilford, Vt., and Ronald Lenois of Hinsdale; a daughter, Barbara Peters of Enosburg Falls, Vt.; a sister, Irene Johnson of Middletown, R.I.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Roland Brunell; and three sisters, Ellen Heidsieck, Viola Loncto and Muriel Brunell.
A graveside committal service in Meetinghouse Hill cemetery will be conducted in the spring at a date to be announced by the funeral home.

John H. Ridgway
BRATTLEBORO — John H. Ridgway, 60, died Nov. 23, 2002, at his home.

Joan B. Wetherhead Rites
SPRINGFIELD — The funeral service for Joan B. Wetherhead, 94, who died Wednesday, was held Sunday at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
Rabbi Edward Boraz of Hanover, N.H., officiated.
Burial followed in Oakland cemetery in Springfield.
Hilda M. Maxham
PITTSFORD — Hilda M. Maxham, 86, died Nov. 24, 2002, at Haven Health Care in Rutland.
She was born April 10, 1916, in Pittsford, the daughter of John and Mary (McClean) Hagan.
She attended Pittsford High School.
She married
Carl Maxham on Jan. 1, 1947. He died in 1979.
Mrs. Maxham worked as a chef at Mountain Meadows and the Proctor/Pittsford Country Club for many years.
She was a World War II veteran, serving with the Women’s Army Corps.
She enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include three sons, Carl Maxham and Albert Maxham, both of Pittsford, Robert Maxham of Clarendon; a daughter, Barbara Maxham of Chittenden; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Jack, Lanson, Alfred and Oswald Hagan.
Burial will be held in Scottsville cemetery in Danby at a later date.
