Margaret G. Burns
SPRINGFIELD — Margaret G. Burns, 88, of Springfield, died Nov. 10, 2002, at Springfield Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born May 13, 1919, in Wakefield, Mass., the daughter of Joseph and Vina (LeBlanc) Murphy. She lived in New Haven, Conn., for many years, and made her home in Springfield for the past 33 years.
She graduated from Windham College with a bachelor’s degree in social services. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the College of Regents of the Women of the Moose Chapter 1085 in Springfield. She was a member and served as a past department president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Robert L. Johnson Post 771 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Springfield. She also worked with the Council on Aging as a respite volunteer.
Survivors include a son, Gerard Burns of Torrington, Conn.; two daughters, Sharon Buckingham of Bridgewater, Conn., and Barbara Miller of Roxbury, Conn.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Burns in 1972; by a daughter, Lydia Wharton in 2001, and by a brother, Joseph Murphy in 1995.
There will be no funeral service or visiting hours.
Burial will take place in the Oakland cemetery in Springfield.

Grant W. Harris
WALPOLE, N.H. — Grant W. Harris, 71, of Walpole, died Nov. 12, 2002, at his home following a long illness.
He was born Oct. 25, 1931, in Bath, Maine, the son of Margaret and Grant Harris.
He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut. He served in the U.S. Army as a company commander for a mechanized infantry unit in the European theater from 1953 to 1957. He received a master’s degree in elementary education at Eastern Connecticut State University. He was a teacher and principal for 37 years in Connecticut and New Hampshire.
Mr. Harris was a director of Outward Bound Wilderness Camp for Boys in the White Mountains. He was a past president of the Niantic chapter of Rotary Club. He was a licensed captain for vessels on the Northeast seaboard, and piloted local ferries in New London.
He enjoyed singing, the sea and the outdoors.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; three sons, Scott, Keith and Edward; three daughters, Lauren, Ellen, and Pamela; his mother; a brother, Robert; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchildren, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his oldest son, Grant.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Walpole.
There are no calling hours.

Joseph M. Zolnik
NEW HAVEN — Joseph Michael Zolnik, 56, died Nov. 12, 2002, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.
He was born Nov. 7, 1946, in West Rutland, the son of Lewis and Helen (Sienicki) Zolnik.
He was a resident of Vermont all his life.
He enjoyed birds, beach balls, traveling and camping.
Survivors include his primary care provider, Edmund Luce of New Haven, with whom he made his home; his father and stepmother, Lewis and Isabelle Zolnik of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Lewis Zolnik Jr. of Bethlehem, Pa., and Stanley Zolnik of Lithonia, Ga.; a sister, Julie Kohl of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon with the Rev. Albert Baltz, pastor, officiating. The graveside committal service and burial will follow in Pine Hill cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
George E. Billings
WEYBRIDGE — George E. Billings, 76, of Weybridge, died Nov. 12, 2002, at Helen Porter Health and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.
He was born Dec. 20, 1925, in New Haven, the son of Thadius and Effie (Allen) Billings. At the age of 6, he moved to Middlebury, where he attended school until he joined the U.S. Army in 1944. He served in the European Theatre, and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Army of Occupation Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Following his discharge from the Army in 1946, Mr. Billings worked as a master plumber and furnace expert by John Gerow and Sons in Middlebury, where he worked for 37 years.
He was a member of Middlebury Legion Post 27.
Survivors include his companion, Gladys Goodspeed of Weybridge, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; five brothers, Allen, Ralph, Howard, Lyle and Raymond; and two sisters, Marjorie Amidon and Doris Piper.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury, with the Rev. Rich Neal officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Greenwood cemetery in Bristol.
Friends may call one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

Aida I. Perry
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Aida I. Perry, 63, died Nov. 11, 2002, at St. Cloud Hospital.
She was born Feb. 20, 1939, in Staten Island, N.Y., the daughter of Elsie and Charles Siravo.
She married
Richard Perry on Nov. 4, 1961, in Dover Plains, N.Y.
Mrs. Perry was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
She worked for Kimberly Clark, Harlam Valley State School in Harlam Valley, N.Y., and Wassig State School in Dover Plains, N.Y.
She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in St. Cloud.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Perry of Kissimmee; four sons, Charles Perry and Jody Perry, both of Kissimmee, Gene Perry of Rutland, Vt., and Shawn Perry of Brandon, Vt.; a sister, Charlotte Murray of Brandon, Vt.; seven grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass will be held Thursday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in St. Cloud, with the Rev. Kent Walker officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Osceola Memory Gardens cemetery in Kissimmee.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Osceola Memory Gardens cemetery, Funeral Home and Crematory.
Margaret A. Dimick
MEREDITH, N.H. — Margaret Ann Dimick, 62, formerly of Meredith, died Nov. 12, 2002, at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia.
She was born Sept. 1, 1940, in Granville, N.Y., the daughter of Walter and Hazel (Dawson) Brown.
She grew up in West Rutland, Vt., and lived there for many years. She moved to Manchester, N.H., in the early 1970s, and then to Meredith, before moving to Bristol a short time ago.
She worked for 10 years as a doll-maker at Annalee Dolls in Meredith, and also worked for Aavid Engineering in Laconia.
She was a member of the Bethany Chapel United Church of Christ in Manchester, and the Annalee Doll Society in Meredith.
She was married
to Paul Dimick Sr., who died in February 1991.
Mrs. Dimick was known for her wedding cakes and other creative ideas.
Survivors include four children, Yvonne Monroe of Bristol, and Alvira Mientus, Shawn Dimick and Paul Dimick II, all of Manchester; 10 grandchildren; three brothers, John Brown and Andrew Brown of West Rutland, Vt., and Paul Brown of Wallingford, Vt.; four sisters, Rose Grandchamp of West Rutland, Vt., Charlotte Wallace of Shrewsbury, Vt., Elizabeth Brown of Pittsford, Vt., and Josephine Burke of Hydeville, Vt.; several nieces and nephews; and her fiancé Carroll Woodard of Bristol.
The funeral will be held Saturday at noon at the Mayhew Funeral Home, Routes 3 and 104, in Meredith, with the Rev. Cynthia Morse, interim pastor of the First Congregational Church of Meredith, officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Indicates a paid obituary

Flora B. Weeks
Flora B. Weeks, 97, of Rutland, died Nov. 25, 2002, at Eden Park Nursing Home. She was born in Rutland, on March 31, 1905, the daughter of Robert and Delia (Crossman) Weeks.
A graduate of the Rutland Hospital Training School in 1932, Flora worked for many years as a private duty nurse in the Rutland area. In 1975 she received an honorary life membership in the Rutland County Nurses’ Association. She was a life-long student of Vermont history and family genealogy, and a member of several historical associations, including the Vermont chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, of which she was state historian. She was a founding member of the Crown Point Road Association and for many years was its archivist-historian. She was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1927.
She will be missed by her family and by all who knew of and shared her love of Vermont.
Survivors include nephews, Robert W. Weeks of Montreal, Quebec, and Clarence P. Barlow Jr. of Florida; and a niece, Charlotte Val Preda of Bomoseen, Vt..
She was predeceased by three brothers, N. Wendell Weeks, Clarence P. Barlow Sr. and Frank R. Barlow.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at 11 a.m. in Tossing Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce A. Bishop, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the Tossing Funeral Home.
Burial will be in East Clarendon cemetery.

Helen D. Godfrey
Helen D. Godfrey, 91, died November 24, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born December 25, 1910, in Newark, N.J., daughter of Helen Grecsner and Charles Doma.
Mrs. Godfrey started nurses training at age 16. After receiving her RN, she continued her education at Columbia University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation, she taught nursing in Washington, D.C., and Elizabeth, N.J. She taught basic sciences, but especially enjoyed the field of microbiology.
In 1940, she married
Dr. Alan Oakes Godfrey, an obstetrician and gynecologist from Burlington, Vt. They practiced medicine in Newark, N.J., until his death in 1971. She managed the office and assisted him with minor surgeries.
Throughout their lives, the Godfrey family developed a love for Vermont. They summered at Cedar Beach on the shores of Lake Champlain, and enjoyed hiking Mansfield, Camel’s Hump and the Lincoln Range.
After her husband’s death, Helen moved to Maplewood, N.J. She was a member of the Morrow Memorial Methodist Church. She loved classical music and attending concerts. In 2000, she moved to Rutland to be near her daughters.
Her joy in life was taking part in the accomplishments of her granddaughters: Editor Jean-Godfrey June, Dr. Laura Watt, Dr. Sara Vargas Moolman, Dr. Hannah Vargas Stechschulte and Dr. Alison Vargas.
She is survived by three daughters, Alice Cummings of Menlo Park, Calif., Ann Vargas of Rutland, Vt., Susan Mills of Randolph Center, Vt.; five granddaughters, four great-grandchildren; a niece; and brother-in-law.
She was predeceased by her sister, Elsie Oravetz.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 30, at Tossing Funeral Home, Rutland, Vt.

James Mahoney
James Mahoney, 61, of Florida and a former resident of Rutland, died Nov. 26, 2002, at North Florida Center Hospital in Lake Butler, Fla.
He was born Jan. 16, 1941, in Rutland, the son of John and Doris Mahoney.
The graveside service will be held in Calvary cemetery in Rutland at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
