Jane C. Zuk

Jane C. Zuk, 73, of Rutland, died Nov. 19, 2002, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 23, 1929, in West Rutland, the son of Michael and Antonina (Gradziel) Rosmus.

She graduated from West Rutland High School in 1947.

She worked at Tambrands for 32 years, retiring in 1991.

Mrs. Zuk was a member of St. Peter’s Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Jarrosak and Judy Fuller, both of Rutland; a son, John Zuk of Arlington; a brother, William Rosmus of Rutland; her former husband, Bernerd Zuk of West Rutland; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Wilk; four brothers, John Rosmus Sr., Stanley Rosmus, Joseph Rosmus and Raymond Rosmus; and a grandson.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at Christ the King Church. Burial will follow in Calvary cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

Elwyn E. Lacey

SPRINGFIELD — Elwyn Eugene “Gene” Lacey, 71, passed away Monday, November 18, 2002, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a valiant fight against cancer. Gene was born November 10, 1931, in Northampton, Mass., to Elwyn Ernest and Doris (Babbitt) Lacey.

In 1951, Gene was named national champion in an apprentice bricklayers competition in Chicago, Ill. He began his career working for Aquadro and Cerruti and in 1962 formed L&S Contractors, Inc. His company contracted masonry work for many commercial structures in New England, including the greenhouses at the University of Massachusetts, the Northampton Police Department building, the First Congregational Church of Gloucester, and many banks and firehouses. He and his wife later purchased Oscarson’s Automotive Supply in Springfield, Vermont, where they have lived for the past 25 years. While living in Springfield, Gene was active in the Lion’s Club and the Sink or Swim Stock Club. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Springfield and also served on the Springfield town budget committee.

Gene was an avid outdoorsman, gardener, farmer, beekeeper and maple sugarer. Exceptionally generous and kind to those he held dear, Gene will be remembered most for his loving devotion to his family and friends, and his wise and joyful spirit. He was too good a man to leave so soon.

Gene is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara (Rand) Lacey, whom he married on July 5, 1952, in Northampton, Mass. His three daughters, Cynthia and her husband Mark Shepard of Northampton, Mass., Susan and her husband Sonny Tavernier of Dacula, Georgia, and Pamela Lacey of Wilton, Conn.; a son, Bruce and his wife Susan Lacey of Foster City, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Andrew and Gregory Shepard of Northampton, Mass., and Melissa and Jodie Scott of Dacula, Georgia. He is also survived by his three brothers, Rev. John Lacey of Mariville, Maine, Robert Lacey of Westhampton, Mass., and Edward Lacey of Florence, Mass.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the First Congregational Church in Springfield with Rev. William Nelson, Pastor, officiating. A private family burial will take place in Northampton, Mass., on Friday.

Friends may call at the Davis Memorial Chapel on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Endowment Fund at the First Congregational Church, 77 Main Street, Springfield, Vt., 05158.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Arline F. Hopkins

SPRINGFIELD — Arline F. Hopkins, 91, died Nov. 18, 2002, at Mount Ascutney Hospital in Windsor.

She was born Aug. 15, 1911, in Milford, N.H., the daughter of Lewis and Helen (Sanderson) Wilkins.

She attended schools in Milford.

She married Richmond Hopkins Sr. on Oct. 19, 1935, in Hancock, N.H. He died in 1996.

Mrs. Hopkins worked as a clerk at Doanes Gift Shop, Britts Department Store and Furman’s Department Store.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Springfield, Columbia Rebekah Lodge 21 and the Auxiliary Canton Ascutney 7.

Survivors include a son, Richmond Hopkins Jr. of North Springfield; a daughter, Marsha Foote of Fonda, N.Y.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Christine McKenzie of South Burlington and Mildred Terris of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Lewis Wilkins, and by a sister, Evelyn Comolli.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Nelson, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will take place in Greenvale cemetery in Greenfield, N.H., at a later date.

Friends may call Saturday one hour prior to the service at the Davis Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Ruby D. Hill

READING — Ruby D. Hill, 80, a former longtime resident of Reading, died Nov. 18, 2002, at Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born April 22, 1922, in Barnet, the daughter of Ora and Mary Farr.

She married Ray Hill on June 5, 1948, in Southington, Conn. He died in 1969.

Mrs. Hill enjoyed embroidering and crocheting.

Survivors include three daughters, Vianna Bennett of Johnson, Patricia Titus of Reading and Lillian Landry of Lewisville, Texas; a son, Kenneth Hill of Enfield, N.H.; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Orlowski of North Haverhill, N.H.; two brothers, Frank Farr of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Norman Farr of Cape Coral, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Bertrum Hill; two sisters; and two brothers.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Scherwerts, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will take place in Elmwood cemetery in Northfield at a later date.

Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Humane Society, P.O. Box 398, Springfield, 05156.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Agnes D. Fischer

ROCKINGHAM — Agnes D. Fischer, 79, died Nov. 19, 2002, at her home.

She was born Aug. 13, 1923, in Bronx, N.Y., the daughter of John and Georgianna (Bolen) Burkard.

She graduated from Christopher Columbus High School in New York.

She married Robert Fischer on Dec. 11, 1943, in Bronx, N.Y.

Mrs. Fischer was a homemaker.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Fischer of Springfield, Richard Fischer of Rockingham and Louis Fischer of Hudson, N.H.; a daughter, Lorraine McKay of Hyde Park, N.Y.; a brother, John Burkard; a sister, Jean Staib; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Georgianna Aram and Gertrude Farrell.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church in Bellows Falls with the Rev. Ernest Pasaro officiating. Burial will follow in St. Charles cemetery in Westminster.

Calling hours will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home.

Edmund R. Lowell

WESTMINSTER — Edmund R. Lowell, 69, died Nov. 19, 2002, at his home.

He was born April 28, 1933, in Westminster, the son of Edward and Myrtle (Parry) Lowell.

He attended schools in Westminster and Bellows Falls.

Mr. Lowell worked for Jones and Lamson Machine Shop in Springfield for many years.

He was a Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include his former wife, Doris Beam of Bellows Falls; two sons, Edmund Lowell of New York and Philip Lowell of Bellows Falls; a daughter, Sandra Lowell of New York; a brother, Melvin Lowell of Westminster; six sisters, Donna Bruce of Tennessee, Ivy Nadeau of Newport, N.H., Alice Nickerson of Springfield, Lelamae O’Brien of Alstead, N.H., Ellen Bellville of Massachusetts and Vivian Borneisen of Charlestown, N.H.; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia Webb; and a sister, June Pitts.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls. Burial will follow in Westminster cemetery in Westminster.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home.

Henry J. Plante Rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral Mass for Henry J. Plante, who died Nov. 15, 2002, was celebrated Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington with the Rev. Edward F. Howard, pastor, and the Rev. Michael A. Demasi, retired pastor, officiating.

Organist was Louise Gauthier and soloist was Monica Murray.

American Legion Post 13 provided military honors. Ralph Brown and Donald Tetreault presented the flag to Mr. Plante’s wife, Viola. Taps were sounded by Maurice Rancourt.

Bearers were grandsons, Nathan Jeandell, Matthew Plante, Michael Plante, Joshua Greene, Logan Bottesi and Ryan Bottesi.

A prayer service was held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home prior to the funeral Mass.

The wake service was offered Monday evening at the funeral home by the Rev. Howard and the Rev. Demasi. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1332 and American Legion Post 13 of Bennington also conducted their services Monday evening.

A reception was held in the parish hall at St. John the Baptist Church following the funeral Mass.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.

Edna Jackson

ORWELL — Edna Jackson, 94, of Manchester, Conn., and Orwell, died Nov. 18, 2002, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland.

She was born Jan. 1, 1908, in Manchester, Conn., the daughter of Henry and Mary (Young) Irwin.

She worked at Pratt and Whitney in Connecticut for more than 20 years, retiring in 1973.

Mrs. Jackson was a member of the North United Methodist Church in Manchester, Conn.

Survivors include a son, Robert Jackson of Orwell; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Jackson, in 1977; a son, Douglas Jackson, in 1959; four brothers; and one sister.

The funeral service will be held Friday at noon at the Holmes Funeral Home in Manchester, Conn. Burial will follow in Buckland cemetery in Manchester, Conn.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
