Edward M. Knox Jr.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Edward M. Knox Jr., 66, a former resident of Rutland, Vt., died Nov. 6, 2002, from cancer.

He was born March 17, 1936, in Rutland, the son of Edward and Irene (Hance) Knox.

He attended schools in Rutland.

Mr. Knox was a self-employed carpenter.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen (Walsh) Knox, and their children, Lynn Knox and Melissa Knox, all of Buffalo; a daughter, Trenia Knox and a son, James Knox, both of Rutland; three brothers, Robert Knox of Springfield, Vt., Carl Knox of Hudson, N.Y., and Arthur Knox of Clarendon Springs, Vt.; six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service was held Nov. 8 at the Castiglia Funeral Home in Buffalo. Burial followed in Mount Hope cemetery in Buffalo.

Gilbert Wesley Roberts Jr.

Gilbert Wesley Roberts Jr., 62, of Wallingford, Vermont and a seasonal resident of Ocala, Florida since 1994, passed away on Sunday (November 10, 2002) at Munroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala. Born in Montague, Mass., Mr. Roberts was involved in the family lumber business for many years and is Co-Owner of Mill River Lumber in Clarendon, Vt. He was a member of Wallingford Congregational Church, served in the Army National Guard and Reserves. He was very active driving and showing Morgan and more recently Hackney Horses. He was a member of several Morgan Horse Associations, American Driving Society, Florida Whips and the Vermont Timber Truckers and Producers Assoc. He was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert Wesley Roberts Sr. and is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Roberts; son, Gilbert Wesley Roberts III and his wife Janet L. of Springfield, N.H.; daughter, Tina M. Roberts of Springfield, N.H.; son, Michael C. Roberts and his wife Dianne L. of Wallingford, Vt.; daughter, Kimberly J. Daugherty and her husband Christopher D. of Ocala, Fla.; mother, Dorothy Roberts of Ashfield, Mass.; brother, Russell A. Roberts and his wife Judith A. of Whitsett, N.C.; sister, Marianne Craft and her husband William of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister, Judith C. Provost and her husband Chester of Ashfield, Mass.; and six grandchildren. The memorial service will be held in Vermont at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be sent to Marion Therapeutic Riding Association, P.O. Box 6830, Ocala, Fla., 34478. Priscilla P. Anderson

CASTLETON — Priscilla Pritchard Anderson, 57, a resident of Texas and a former resident of Castleton, died Nov. 8, 2002, at Christopher House Hospice in Austin, Texas.

She was born Nov. 1, 1945, in Castleton, the daughter of Edwald and Beatrice (McCarthy) Pritchard.

She graduated from Fair Haven Union High School in 1966 and Bridgewater (N.J.) Community College, School of Cosmetology.

She was a former member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Castleton.

Survivors include three daughters, Melissa Anderson and Jennifer Anderson, both of Austin, Texas, Wendy Lewis of San Angelo, Texas; three sisters, Wilmah Elliott of Troy, N.Y., Patricia Geanniles of Bennington and Irene Ashford of Fair Haven; four brothers, George Pritchard of Hampton, N.Y., Edward Pritchard of Ivyland, Pa., Thomas Pritchard of Castleton and Peter Pritchard of Maryland; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and seven cousins.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Sarah Pritchard and Mary Pritchard; and two brothers, William Pritchard and Charles Pritchard.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Castleton with the Rev. Charles Danielson, administrator, officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Christopher House Hospice, 2820 East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Austin, Texas, 78702.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Mr. John W. “Bill” Cummings Jr.

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — Mr. John Willard “Bill” Cummings Jr., 81, died Saturday evening, November 9, 2002, after a short illness at the Mt. View Center Genesis Elder Care in Rutland, Vermont, where he received exceptional care and kindness by the nursing staff.

Bill was born on September 18, 1921, in East Milton, Massachusetts, the son of the late John W. and Helen (Wilson) Cummings Sr. He was a graduate of the St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vt., and the Bliss Electrical School of Engineering. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving during WWII.

Mr. Cummings was employed for several years in Computer Data Management for the Stalwart Rubber Company in Cleveland, Ohio. After his retirement, Bill relocated to Poultney, Vermont in 1996 from Zanesville, Ohio, where he has continued to make his home until the time of his death. While living in Ohio his fraternal memberships included the Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, Grand Council Royal & Select Masons of Ohio, Zanesville Council 12 and the Masonic Knight Masons of Dublin, Ireland. While in Vermont, Bill transferred his memberships to the Morning Star Lodge 37, F&AM of Poultney and the Grand Order Sword of Bunker Hill, Ethan Allen Order 88 of Poultney. He was also an active volunteer with the Southwestern Council on Aging as a Senior Companion.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Ms. Joy Cummings of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; his son, Mr. John Robert Cummings of Weatherford, Texas; his two grandchildren, Newton and Virginia; his cousins, Mrs. Eleanor Crabill, Mr. Malcolm C. Wilson Jr. and Dr. Marvin S. Wilson, all of Massachusetts, Mrs. Barbara Jean Arsenault of Florida, Mr. William Hamilton and Mr. Paul Hamilton, both of Missouri; and by his dear friend and companion, Mrs. Teddy Burnett of Fair Haven, Vermont. Mr. Cummings was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Mrs. Clara Jean (Heston) Cummings, who died June 24, 1994; and also by a sister, Ruth Cummings.

There will be no visiting hours or funeral services here in Vermont. Memorial Contributions in memory of Mr. Cummings may be given to the Activities Dept., in care of Mt. View Center Genesis Eldercare, 9 Haywood Avenue, Rutland, Vt., 05701.

Burial will be in the family plot in the Memorial Park cemetery in Zanesville, Ohio.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home of Fair Haven, Vt.

Emily C. Harper

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The memorial service for Emily C. Harper, who died Nov. 2, 2002, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Rutland. A gathering at the church will be held after the service.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Ameson Avenue, Auburndale, 33823.

Mary E. Shugrue Rites

The graveside service for Mary E. Shugrue, 78, of Rutland, who died Nov. 7, 2002, was held Tuesday in East Clarendon cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Bishop, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Rutland, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, 05702-0787.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

Valerie P. Drzewiczewski Rites

WEST RUTLAND — The funeral Mass for Valerie P. Drzewiczewski, 79, who died Nov. 8, 2002, was celebrated Tuesday at St. Bridget’s Church with the Rev. Robert Whalen, pastor, officiating. Concelebrant was the Rev. Frank Warzocha, pastor of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Burial followed in St. Stanislaus cemetery.

Organist was Angela Lundrigan and vocalist was Teresa Bartlett.

Bearers were Robert McNulty Jr., James Wetherby, John Bloomer, Michael Ryan, Harold Burgess and Damian Vaccarella.

A prayer service was held Monday at the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Whalen and members of the West Rutland Unit 87 Auxiliary.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home.

Grant L. Flint

BRAINTREE — Grant Lewis Flint, 91, died Nov. 11, 2002, at his daughter’s home in Randolph Center.

He was born April 25, 1911, in West Brookfield, the son of Fred and Lella (Flint) Flint.

He attended schools in West Brookfield and East Braintree.

He married Lucy Wakefield in 1939 in Norwich. She died in 1999.

Mr. Flint was a lifelong farmer.

He was a member of the Congregational Church of East Braintree/ West Brookfield, Snowsville Grange, Randolph Fish and Game Club, Braintree Historical Society and the Boy Scouts. He was past president of the Peth Community Club, and served as school director and selectman in Braintree for 25 years.

He enjoyed maple sugaring, bird feeding, the Boston Red Sox and vegetable gardening.

Survivors include three sons, Avery Flint of Randolph Center, Fred Flint of Braintree and Gardner Flint of Randolph; three daughters, Addie Lamb of Randolph, Helen Luther of Randolph Center and Rose Derrick of Shinglehouse, Pa.; a brother, Leland Flint of Randolph; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

The memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph with the Rev. Ronald Rilling and Robert Small officiating. Burial will take place in West Brookfield cemetery at a later date.

Calling hours will be Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the East Braintree/West Brookfield Church, P.O. Box 371, Randolph, 05060.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Hazel Smith

SOUTH ROYALTON — Hazel Smith, 81, died Nov. 12, 2002, at Brookside Nursing Home in Bradford.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Pearl T. Spaulding

WILDER — Pearl T. Spaulding, 80, died Nov. 11, 2002, at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction.

She was born Aug. 26, 1922, in Morrisville, the daughter of Bernie and Bertha (Vesper) Tomlinson.

She graduated from People’s Academy in Morrisville in 1939 and Johnson Normal School in 1943.

She married Al Spaulding on Aug. 16, 1943, in Morrisville. He died in 1987.

After she and her husband moved to Wilder, they started Spaulding Oil Service and operated it until retiring in 1982.

Mrs. Spaulding was a member of the Greater Hartford United Church of Christ, where she belonged to the Women’s Fellowship, and a former member of the Junior Guild at the Wilder Church. She also was a member of the Wilder Home Dem Club the Wilder Snowmobile Club and active in the PTA.

She enjoyed sewing, and was a former member of the Airstream Club. She also enjoyed riding motorcycles.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Langlois of White River Junction and Dianne Young of Winterville, N.C.; two sons, Skip Spaulding of White River Junction and Gary Spaulding of Hartland; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Hugh Tomlinson and Robert Tomlinson.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Greater Hartford United Church of Christ. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Pleasant View cemetery in Morrisville.

Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Greater Hartford United Church of Christ Bell Restoration Fund, P.O. Box 265, Hartford, 05047, or Alzheimer’s Association, Vermont Chapter, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier, 05601.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Joanne E. Anderson

SPRINGFIELD — Joanne E. Anderson, 71, of Windham, died Nov. 11, 2002, at Springfield Hospital.

She was born Nov. 28, 1930, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Paul and Irene (Thayer) Morley.

She was a past matron of Mayflower Chapter 65, OES in Weymouth, Mass., and a past grand matron of the state of Massachusetts, OES. She was a member of Mizpah Chapter 40, Order of the Eastern Star in Chester and the Congregational Church in Windham.

Mrs. Anderson enjoyed traveling and going to meetings in different states, and watching her grandsons playing sports.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Harold Anderson; a son, Paul Anderson of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Paula Eldridge of Jamaica, Vt.; two grandsons; and two nieces.

She was predeceased by a sister, Pauline Babbitt.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Congregational Church in Townshend.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the White Funeral Home in Townshend.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Cottage Foundation, P.O. Box 216, Townshend, 05353.

Arrangements are under the direction of the White Funeral Home in Townshend.
