Joan B. Blake
SHAFTSBURY — Joan B. Blake, 65, died Oct. 4, 2002, at her home in Shaftsbury,
She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., June 8, 1937, the daughter of Frank and Carolyn (Sekerske) Waltrich. She was a graduate of Springfield High School in North Philadelphia.
She moved to Bennington in 1955 and received her bachelor’s degree from Bennington College. She also studied through the Antioch College in Keene, N.H., where she received her master’s degree in educational psychology.
Mrs. Blake was a co-founder of the Prospect School in North Bennington.
Following an interest in school administration, she studied accounting and eventually received an accounting degree.
She worked at several accounting firms and at the time of her retirement owned the J. B. Blake accounting in firm in Bennington.
She enjoyed quilting and needlecraft.
At the time of her death she was a board member and treasurer for the Second Chance Animal Shelter in Shaftsbury. She was also a volunteer at Prospect Nursing Home in North Bennington.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Richard C. Blake; a daughter, Jodi Courtney of Medway, Mass.; a sister, Marolyn Oldberg of Summerfield, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Nov. 10 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the home of her close friend, Alice Miller, at 81 Horton Hill Road, Shaftsbury. Burial will take place privately at the convenience of the family.

Anne H. Sheehan
SPRINGFIELD — Anne H. Sheehan, 83, died Friday at Springfield Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Claremont, N.H., the daughter of John and Alexandra (Blavewicz) Gintoff. She attended schools in Claremont and graduated from Stevens High School in 1937.
She married
Kenneth J. Sheehan in Springfield in 1942.
She lived in Springfield for most of her life. She worked for the Springfield School District as a secretary at Park Street School for many years. She later worked for the Vermont National Bank for several years.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and a former member of the Crown Point Country Club, where she was an avid golfer.
Survivors include a brother, Leonard Gintoff of Meriden, Conn.; three sisters, Mary Savoie of Claremont, N.H., Jenny Peltonen of Miami, Fla., and Blanche Pierce of Fort Myers, Fla.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1971; two sons, Michael J. Sheehan in 1990 and Philip J. Sheehan in 1994; and by a brother, Fella Gintoff.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Romano, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery.
Friends may call at the Davis Chapel on Tuesday one hour prior to the service.
Joseph L. Cassano
BENNINGTON — Joseph L. “Papa Joe” Cassano Jr., 55, died suddenly Oct. 5, 2002, at Albany Medical Center.
He was born in Bennington Sept. 29, 1947, the son of Joseph L. and Dorothy (Smith) Cassano Sr. He received his early education in the Norwalk, Conn., and Bennington schools. He later attended trade school in Bennington.
He married
Linda Potter March 19, 1966, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington.
Mr. Cassano worked at Abacus Automation and was the owner of Joe’s Cycle in Bennington.
He was an avid motorcyclist and was an active member of the Harley Owners Group. He was also an All-American Motorcycle Rodeo staff member.
He was a former volunteer with the Bennington Rescue Squad and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Bennington.
Survivors include his wife of Bennington; a daughter, Joann Cassano of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Christopher Cassano of Bennington and Tramain Cassano of Shaftsbury; his mother of Bellview, Fla.; a brother, Robert Cassano of Oakdale, Conn.; two grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will begin at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and continue at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. with a funeral Mass. Burial will take place in Park Lawn cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. The wake service will be offered at 4 p.m.

Cindy L. Granger
BENNINGTON — Cindy Lou Granger, 36, died suddenly Oct. 4, 2002, at her home.
She was born in Bennington July 16, 1966, the daughter of Raymond R. and Lois (Coon) Granger. She received her education in the Bennington and Hoosick Falls, N.Y., schools.
She enjoyed gardening and tag sales.
Survivors include her companion of 14 years, Daniel Hamel of Bennington; two children, Nicholas and Rebecca Hamel of Bennington; her parents, of White Creek, N.Y.; a sister, Toni Hunt of White Creek, N.Y.; a brother, Raymond R. Granger Jr. of White Creek, N.Y.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday at 1 p.m. Private committal services will be held at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.

Kelli Knight Rites
NORTH SPRINGFIELD —A funeral service for Kelli M. Knight, 14, who died at her home Oct. 2, 2002, was held Saturday in the North Springfield Baptist Church. The Rev. Richard Cederholm, pastor, officiated. Burial followed in Pine Grove cemetery in North Springfield.
Pianist was Karen Engdahl.
Bearers were Douglas Densmore, Shane Knight, Justin Rhodes, Geoff Muther, Kevin Thorburn and Mick Knight.
The Davis Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Muriel F. Tabor
RANDOLPH — Muriel F. Tabor, 97, died Oct. 5, 2002, at Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.
She was born July 11, 1905, in Brookfield, the daughter of Walter B. and Lillian (Farrar) Fullam. She was one of 11 children. She attended schools in East Roxbury.
She married
Church E. Tabor July 15, 1923 in Randolph. He died in 1991.
Following their marriage, the Tabors moved to Nashua, N.H., and worked there for a few years. They moved back to Brookfield and later bought a farm in Randolph Center. They had a dairy farm and changed over to raising beef cattle.
At one point they owned and operated what is now the Vermont Technical College apple orchard.
Mrs. Tabor had made her home with her daughter-in-law, Joan Moran, for the past two years.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, rug hooking, freezing and canning.
She was a member of the East Braintree Congregational Church and the Randolph Center Home Dem Club.
Survivors include a son, Robert Tabor of Randolph Center; two daughters, Jeanne Hutchinson of Northfield and Robert Preston of Vergennes; a sister, Ruth Foster of Freeport, Maine; 21 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Duane Tabor, and three grandsons.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph with Robert Small officiating. Private burial will be at a later date in the Pleasant View cemetery in Randolph.
Friends may call today at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m.

Robert W. Giard Rites
BRIDPORT — The funeral service for Robert Wayne Giard, 79, who died Oct. 2, 2002, was held Sunday at Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury. The Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Brandon Congregational Church, officiated. Graveside committal and burial with military honors followed in Bridport Central cemetery. A reception followed in the Bridport Church vestry.
Organist was Bonnie Johnson.
Bearers were Steven Giard, Robert James, Jon Rooney, Richard Giard, Jimmy Giard and Paul Wells.
Honorary bearers were Harold Giard, Scott Giard, Jason Kimball, Joel Kimball and Robert Garthaffner.
Martha Atkinson
Martha Wells Atkinson, of Rutland Town, passed away on Oct. 5, 2002, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center after a long illness. Mrs. Atkinson was born on Oct. 17, 1928.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Frank Atkinson of Rutland, Vt.; two sons, Frank Atkinson Jr. of Loxahatchee, Fla., and Bruce Atkinson of Rutland, Vt.; a daughter, Susan Homan of Middleburg, Va.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Her family was at her side when she passed.
Martha Atkinson had a passion for horses that she shared with her daughter, as well as a love for sailing that she shared with her husband and two sons. She was also an avid gardener and loved growing and arranging flowers.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held at the convenience of the family.

Francis Doyle
BRANDON — Francis “Frank” Doyle, 74, died Oct. 6, 2002, at his home.
He was born Nov. 20, 1927, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., the son of Lawrence and Verda (Bruno) Doyle.
He graduated from Plattsburgh High School in 1947, and in 2000 he was inducted into the Plattsburgh High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
He married
Evelyn Parkhurst Morgan on Aug. 23, 1980, in Proctor.
Mr. Doyle worked for Nabisco-IBC as a sales manager, retiring in 1976, and later for Stanley Tools as a distributor representative, retiring in 1991.
He had been a member of the Lions Club, charter member of the Plattsburgh and Vero Beach, Fla., chapters of the Elks for 39 years, and had served as treasurer for the Morrisonville (N.Y.) PTA and as a board member at Saranac (N.Y.) Central High School.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and downhill skier. He enjoyed golf, and was a member and club champion at Sandridge Country Club in Vero Beach. He also belonged to Neshobe Golf Club in Brandon.
Survivors include his wife of Brandon; two sons, Michael Doyle of Lewis, N.Y., and Timothy Doyle of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; four stepsons, Lyman Morgan of Florida, Michael Morgan of Proctor, David Morgan of Rutland and James Morgan of Pittsford; three daughters, Deborah Kosmoski of West Wendfield, N.Y., Faye Calvin of Mooers, N.Y. and Patti Cinelli of St. Johnsville, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Chris Morgan of Milton; and 20 grandchildren.
The memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon with the Rev. Albert Baltz, pastor, officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends at the church parish hall for a time of fellowship and reflection following the Mass.
There will be no calling hours.

Mary Ann Stratton Rites
The graveside service for Mary Ann Stratton, 55, of Rutland, who died Oct. 3, 2002, was held Monday in East Clarendon cemetery with the Rev. David Lind, pastor of Calvary Bible Church, officiating.
Bearers were Jon Caverly, Nate Caverly, Larry Soine, Edward Congdon Jr., Wesley Coburn and Cody Coburn.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Tossing Funeral Home.
