Judith Hansen Rites
KILLINGTON — The memorial service for Judith Johnson Hansen, 53, who died Aug. 8, 2002, was held Sunday at Grace Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. David J. Dean, senior minister emeritus, and Pastor Beverly Anderson of the Sherburne United Church of Christ, officiated.
Organist was Alan D. Walker, minister of music emeritus.
The Tossing Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Marcella M. Hoes
SHELLBURNE — Marcella M. Hoes, 85, of Shelburne, formerly of Poultney, died Aug. 9, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington.
She was born Sept. 11, 1916, in Poultney, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Keefe) McGrath.
Mrs. Hoes was a graduate of Castleton State College and then went on to Boston University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education. She was employed as an elementary school teacher in New York, Massachusetts and Vermont before her retirement in 1978.
She lived in Poultney for most of her life and was a communicant of St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Poultney.
In 1959 she married
Harold S. Hoes. He died in 1996.
Survivors include a son, H. Douglas Hoes of Shelburne; a daughter, Sara Hoes of Guilderland, N.Y.; three granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and a great-grandson.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by three sisters.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Poultney with the Rev. Adam J. Krempa, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place at St. Raphael’s Parish cemetery at a later date.

Mark S. Canon
WEST WINDSOR — Mark S. Canon, 19, died suddenly Aug. 9, 2002, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born April 20, 1983, in Hanover, N.H., the son of David and Denise (Donaldson) Canon.
He attended Cornish, N.H., Elementary School and was home-schooled by his mother.
He enjoyed playing video games and listening to music.
Survivors include his parents of Brownsville; two sisters, Leigh Canon and Kate Canon, both of Brownsville; a brother, Matthew Canon of Brownsville; his paternal grandmother, Estelle Canon of Ashtabula, Ohio; his maternal grandmother, Audrey Donaldson of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; his paternal grandfather, Jack Donaldson of Belchertown, Mass.; several aunts and uncles; and one cousin.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Sheddsville cemetery in West Windsor with the Rev. Paul N. Belhumeur, pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, sympathy cards may be mailed to the family at 1925 Brownsville-Hartland Road, Windsor, 05089.

Arlene F. Calvi
QUECHEE — Arlene F. Calvi, 85, died Aug. 9, 2002, at her home in Quechee.
She was born Aug. 29, 1916, in Randolph, the daughter of Horace and Mary (Hill) Fogg. She attended school in North Pomfret.
She moved to White River Junction and worked as a housekeeper. She then moved to Massachusetts, where she met and married
James V. Calvi in 1937. They lived in Hingham, Mass., and she worked as a cook at Hingham High School until retiring at age 70. Mr. Calvi died in 1974.
Mrs. Calvi moved to Quechee in 1987.
She enjoyed caring for others, cooking, reading and plants.
Survivors include three daughters, Elsie Houston of South Easton, Mass., Louise Young of Quechee, and Dianne Robinson of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; a sister, Alice Ballard of Malone, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, James V. Calvi Jr.; a daughter, Patricia McWilliams; four brothers, Harold, Frank, Verne and Wendell “Pete” Fogg; two sisters, Esther Adams and Edith Howard; and a grandson.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated today at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church in White River Junction. Burial will be later in the St. Paul’s cemetery in Hingham, Mass.

Gordon H. Lyons
NORTH BENNINGTON — Gordon H. Lyons, 71, died Aug. 8, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health care in Burlington following a brief battle with Crohn’s disease.
He was born in Bennington July 20, 1931, the son of the Guy Lyons and Marcia (Knapp) Lyons.
He was a 1950 graduate of Bennington High School, where he lettered in three sports.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a sergeant with Company C. 172nd Infantry, 43rd Division of the U.S. Army. He married
Patricia Davey April 26, 1953, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington.
In earlier years, Mr. Lyons was employed at the Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams. For more than 40 years he owned the Davey Oil Co. in Bennington, which he operated from 1960 until the time of his death.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed spending time at his camp in Woodford.
He was a past commander and life member of American Legion Post 13, Elks Lodge 567, VFW Post 1332 and Moose Lodge 1233.
Survivors include his wife of North Bennington; three sons, Michael D. Lyons of Monkton, Gary S. Lyons of Shaftsbury and Guy F. Lyons of Glens Falls, N.Y.; a daughter, Sharon A. Lyons of Burlington; a stepsister, Beatrice Chant of Arizona; a stepbrother, Charles Russell of Tennessee; three grandchildren; and cousins.
The funeral will be held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home today at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Vincent Coppola, associate pastor of Sacred Heart Church, officiating. Burial will take place in Park Lawn cemetery.

Anne Carter
SHELBURNE — Anne “Nan” Carter, 89, died Aug. 10, 2002, at Wake Robin in Shelburne.
She was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of Dr. Nelson Gorham and Ethel (Clinton) Russell. She was a graduate of the Franklin School in Buffalo and Sweet Briar College in 1934.
She married
James Carter in Buffalo on March 14, 1936.
She taught skiing at Glenwood Acres and Kissing Bridge Ski Areas for 25 years, therapeutic horseback riding and adaptive winter sports.
Survivors include four sons, James Carter of Wilson, N.Y., Robert Carter of San Carlos, Calif., William Carter of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and David Carter of South Hero; two daughters, Sarah Carter of Windsor and Anne Carter of East Montpelier; 11 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; two nephews and a niece.
She was predeceased by her husband; two brothers, Dr. Nelson Russell Jr. and Clinton Russell.
A memorial service will be held at Wake Robin in Shelburne on Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. and at St. Mark’s Church in Orchard Park, N.Y., at 3 p.m. on Aug. 31.

Eldora N. Lyon
EAST BETHEL — Eldora N. Lyon, 97, died Aug. 10, 2002, at the Arbors in Shelburne.
She was born at Baptist Corners in Charlotte July 21, 1905, the daughter of Frank and Edith (Gove) Estey. She was educated in Charlotte Graded Schools and Burlington High School and received teachers’ training in Bristol.
She taught school in Grand Isle, Alburg, North Hero, and Addison and for seven years in East Bethel.
She married
Clifton Lyon Oct. 12, 1935. He died in 1991.
The couple farmed in East Bethel for many years.
She was a member of the East Bethel Church, the Gifford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Middle Branch Grange for 65 years.
She enjoyed sewing and reading.
Survivors include nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the East Randolph cemetery with Pastor Millie Reynolds officiating.
There are no calling hours.

Alta B. Brilyea
VERGENNES — Alta Bishop Brilyea, 86, died Aug. 10, 2002, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.
She was born Feb. 12, 1916, in Orwell, the daughter of Louis and Florence (Smith) Brilyea.
She married
Edward Brilyea Oct. 8, 1938, in Shoreham. She lived on the family farm in Addison until moving to Vergennes with her son, Ronald, in 1999.
She had worked at the Middlebury Inn and Van Raalte.
Survivors include four daughters, Elaine Stanley of Salisbury, Carolyn Swinton of Vergennes, Marilyn Nolter of Kingsville, Texas, and Ramona Boswell of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a son, Richard Brilyea of Port Henry, N.Y., and a sister, Helen Sullivan of Shoreham; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1971 and by two sons, David and Ronald.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury with the Rev. Charles O’Leary officiating. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Lakeview cemetery in Shoreham.
Friends may call Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury.

Andrew P. Sherman
NEW HAVEN — Andrew P. Sherman, 30, died Aug. 10, 2001 in Richford.
He was born June 23, 1972, in Middlebury, the son of Robert and Sheila (Holbrook) Sherman. He graduated from Mount Abraham Union High School and St. Michael’s College.
He was employed at Northwestern Counseling and Support Services in St. Albans.
He enjoyed motorcycles and music.
Mr. Sherman is survived by his parents of New Haven, a brother, Chris Coombs; a sister, Susan Coombs of New Haven; his fiancée, Kristine Evarts of New Haven; nephews; a niece; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the New Haven Congregational Church. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in New Haven.
Friends may call at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Terrance A. Barrett
Terrance “Terry” Barrett, 76, of Rutland died Aug. 16, 2002, at Eden Park Nursing Home from complications of Parkinson’s disease.
He was born July 12, 1926, in Rutland, the son of John and Eugenie (Kennedy) Barrett.
He attended Rutland public schools and graduated from Springfield High School in 1945.
He was employed at Fellows Gear Shaping in Springfield and General Electric Co. in Rutland before becoming manager of B/P of America Service Station in Bridgewater, Mass., retiring in 1988.
Mr. Barrett was a Rutland City alderman, serving two terms under Mayor Gilbert Godnick. He was a member of the Springfield Elks Club 1560 where he was past exalted ruler, and member of the Knights of Columbus in Abington, Mass.
He enjoyed music and singing, and directed three minstrel shows.
Survivors include a son, Kim Barrett of Springfield; two daughters, Kelly Young of Exeter, R.I., and Karen Tierney of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three sisters, Sheila Ward of Attleboro, Mass., Gloria LaMontagne of Rutland and Jean Wilson of Plainfield; four brothers, Charles Barrett of Lebanon, N.H., Neville Barrett of Rutland, Gregory Barrett of Georgetown, S.C., and Edward Barrett of Hartland; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, John Barrett in 1993.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Rutland. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
