RUTLAND — Catherine D. Parsons, 87, of Rutland, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002.

Paul William Rivait
SALISBURY — Paul William Rivait, 86, a resident of Salisbury since 1960, passed away with dignity in the comfort of his home Friday, Aug. 2, 2002.
Paul was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Weybridge, Vt, son of Dennis and Maysel (Doolin) Rivait.
Paul graduated from Middlebury High School in 1935 and worked on the family farm until 1938 when he began a distinguished career in the Navy.
On April 6, 1946 he married
Estelle V. LeClair of Providence, R.I.
Paul was a crewman on the submarine salvage ship USS Falcon during the world’s first successful diving bell rescue of the survivors of the sunken submarine USS Squalus, which sank off Maine’s Isle of Shoals in 1939. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, retiring as a Navy recruiter in Rutland in 1958.
In 1961 he was elected Postmaster of Salisbury until his retirement in 1983.
An avid gardener and expert cook, Paul enjoyed his retirement entertaining and cooling for family and friends and was never happier than when he had a house full of guests. Paul was widely known for his generosity in sharing the abundance of his garden.
He spent many enjoyable years as an avid, devoted fan of Middlebury High School football and was a fixture on the sidelines of games, both home and away.
On Nov. 15, 1992, the MUHS Football Booster Club presented a treasured plaque to Paul for “his many untold years of dedication and support of MUHS sports and programs.”
He is survived by his children Donald Rivait of Eden Mills, Vt., Maysel McGown of Rochester, N.Y., Norma and Scott Thomas of Underhill Center, Vt., Paul and Sue Rivait of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Thomas and Lorriane Rivait of Georgia, Vt. He also leaves several grandchildren, Jeb K. Rivait, Meagan Labonte and Amanda McGown, Terrill Jane Thomas, Chris and Nick Rivait, and Birk and Eve Rivait.
Paul was predeceased by his wife, Estelle V. Rivait on Jan. 11, 1997 and his daughter, Paula in 1945. His brother John Rivait of Chicago, Ill. also predeceased him.
The family would especially like to thank Robin Jackson, Estelle Shepard, and Happy Hearts Homecare, Inc. caring staff, who made it possible for Paul to remain independent.
In lieu of flowers Paul would prefer contributions be made to Friends of MUHS Football, MUHS, 73 Charles Ave., Middlebury, VT 05753.
A Prayer service will be held at the Sanderson Funeral Home on Monday at 5 p.m. with Father Peter O’Leary of St. Mary’s Church officiating.
A time of visitation will follow until 8 p.m. There will be a reception following at the Waybury Inn in East Middlebury.
Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are under the care of Sanderson Funeral Home, Middlebury.
Freda M. White
ROCHESTER — Freda M. White, 87, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002 in Barre.
She was born Feb. 28, 1915 in Montgomery, Vt., daughter of Moses and Joesphine (Lumbra) Rushford.
She married
Casper Beattie and later, Leonard White, both of whom predecease her.
Survivors include three sons, Hugh Taylor of North Carolina, Dennis Beattie of Granville, Vt., George Beattie of Moretown, Vt; two daughters, Doris Billings of Rochester, Vt., Joyce Guilmet of North Carolina; four brothers, Carl Rushford of Eden, Vt., Larry Rushford of Ferrisburg, Vt., and Eddy and Earl Rushford, both of Springfield, Vt.
She is predeceased by one brother, Clarence Rushford.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Rochester Federated Church. Graveside committal services and burial will follow in Maplewood cemetery, Stockbridge.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the Rochester Federated Church.

DANBY — James E. McClintock, 75, died Aug. 5, 2002, at his residence.

Irene Disraely
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Irene Disraely, 84, a former resident of Rutland, Vt., died Aug. 5, 2002.
She was born Oct. 1, 1917, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Morris and Dora (Gans) Guttenplan.
She was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving as a corporal during World War II.
Mrs. Disraely was a member of the Jewish Center in Rutland.
Survivors include her husband, Seymour Disraely of Rochester; a daughter, Barbara Disraely of Rochester; a son, Michael Disraely of Long Beach, Calif.; a sister, Jean Stone; and several nieces and nephews.
The graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Rutland Jewish cemetery in Clarendon Vt.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Service/Hospice, 2180 Empire Boulevard, Webster, 14580.

The funeral service for Roger Paul Young, 53, of Rutland, who died July 31, 2002, was held Monday at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon with the Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Brandon Congregational Church, officiating. The graveside service followed in Pine Hill cemetery in Brandon.

The private graveside service for Elisabeth Hamilton Risdon, 93, of Rutland, who died July 13, 2002, was held Monday in Scottsville cemetery in Danby with the Rev. Sharon Miller of the Community Church in Tinmouth officiating.

CASTLETON — The funeral service for John Russell Fish, 89, who died Aug. 1, 2002, was held Monday at the Federated Church in Castleton with the Rev. Norene Carter, pastor, officiating. The Rev. Gary Holden, a nephew, co-officiated.
Organist was Nancy Wetherby and soloist was Andre Gordon.
Crippen Fellows Post 50, American Legion of Castleton, provided military honors. Jeff Grady presented the flag to Mr. Fish’s niece, Betty Kapitan.
Bearers were Byron Fish, Landy Danforth, Mark Woodbury, Casey Gordon, John Swenor and Marvin Close.
Lee Lodge 30, F&AM, of Castleton held its fraternal service Sunday evening at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.
Omitted from the obituary was that Mr. Fish was a member of the Fair Haven Chapter 70, Order of Eastern Star, for 20 years.

Christopher Bracken
BARNARD — Christopher Bracken, 48, died Aug. 3, 2002.
He was president and founder of ENORMO Corp.
Survivors include his partner, Amy LeBaron; his mother, Verna Bracken of Lakehurst, N.J.; a sister, Mary of Boston; a brother, Denis of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; and an uncle.
The memorial service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Barnard Town Hall.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.
Anthony R. Stefaney
CHESTER — Anthony R. Stefaney, 81, a former resident of Chatham, Mass., and Foxboro, Mass., died Aug. 3, 2002, at Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Dec. 24, 1920, in Boston.
He was the former co-owner of Minuteman Auto Appraisal in Brookline, Mass.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth of Chester; a son, J. Clinton Stefaney of Hawaii; a daughter, Lynne Stefaney of Chester; two sisters, Katherine Quinn of Newton, Mass., and Rita Cannon of Cummaquid, Mass.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Strumski.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Theodore N. Carman
MANCHESTER — Theodore Nelson Carman, 90, a former resident of Floral Park, N.Y., died Aug. 5, 2002, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.
He was born in Jamaica, N.Y., the son of Samuel and Etta (Stansbury) Carman.
He attended schools in Jamaica, N.Y.
Mr. Carman married
Karen (Sunny) Sundquist on Sept. 14, 1940, in Richmond Hill, N.Y.
He had been employed at Manufacture’s Hanover Trust Bank in New York City for many years, retiring in 1966. He then moved to Manchester, where he and his wife owned and operated the Center Cut Rate Store.
Mr. Carman was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in the 29th Infantry and participating in the second invasion.
Survivors include his wife; and a daughter, Karen Carman of Arlington.
The graveside service will be held Thursday in Calverton National cemetery in Calverton, N.Y.
Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester.
