John R. Fish
CASTLETON — John Russell Fish, 89, died Aug. 1, 2001, at Mountain View Center Genesis Elder Care in Rutland after a short illness.
He was born on Mar. 4, 1913, in Hubbardton, the son of John W. and Lora Mae (Gibbs) Fish.
He was educated in Hubbardton and Castleton schools and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater.
Mr. Fish was first employed with the highway department and later at the sewage treatment plant for the town of Castleton, retiring after many years of service. He also served many years as a member of the Castleton cemetery Association and as sexton of Hillside cemetery.
He was a member of Castleton Federated Church, American Legion Post 50 and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6471 in Manchester. He was just awarded a 60-year continuous membership pin with Lee Lodge 30, F&AM, of Castleton.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor M. (Hall) Fish on Jan. 2, 1997; a sister, Arletta C. Wetherby; and two brothers, Herman Fish and Byron Fish.
The funeral service will be conducted on Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Castleton Federated Church, with the Rev. Dr. Norene Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside cemetery.
Visiting hours are Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven. Fraternal services will be conducted by Lee Lodge at 7:30 p.m.

Garfield Fay Rites
GOSHEN — The funeral service for Garfield Harrison Fay, 90, who died July 30, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center, was held on Friday at the Miller and Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
The Rev. Richard White, pastor of Brandon Congregational Church, officiated.
Burial followed in Forest Dale cemetery where Dean Lawrence and members of St. Paul’s Masonic Lodge 25 conducted its service.
Following the committal, the family received friends at Goshen Town Hall for a time of fellowship and reflection.
Bearers included Harry E. Hunt and Harry L .Hunt, Howard Baldwin, Phil Ladue, Michael Josselyn, and Charles Johnson.
Lloyd W. Jones Rites
POULTNEY — The funeral service for Lloyd W. “Curley” Jones, who died July 29, 2002, was conducted Thursday at the Welsh Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Donald R. Pepper, pastor, officiated.
Full military honors were provided by American Legion Post 39 at Poultney cemetery.
Bearers were Paul W. Jones, Kenneth A. Jones, Dan Jones, David Powers, Jeffery Houghton and Jarrod Houghton.
Following the funeral, a reception was held at the Poultney Senior Center.
Evergreen Chapter 63, Order of the Eastern Star, held a fraternal service on Wednesday at Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home.
Arnold Cooley
MIDDLEBURY — Arnold Cooley, 66, died Aug. 2, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Sanderson Funeral Home.
Zigmunt R. Janowski
SPRINGFIELD — Zigmunt R. Janowski, 81, died Aug. 2, 2002, at his home.
He was born June 11, 1921 in Cavendish, son of Joseph and Pauline (Janowski) Janowski. He attended schools in Cavendish and graduated from Black River High School in 1939.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was married
to Ruth Thomas on Aug. 3, 1957 at Holy Name of Mary Church in Proctorsville.
Mr. Janowski was employed as an engineer at Bryant Grinder Corporation in Springfield for 33 years retiring in 1983.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, VFW Post 771, and an avid golfer at Crown Point Country Club.
He also enjoyed gardening.
Survivors are his wife of Springfield; a son, Gregory M. Janowski of Canaan, N.H.; a daughter Gail J. Carlson of Perkinsville; two brothers, Antoni Janowski of Springfield, and Harry Janowski of Rensselaer, N.Y.; five sisters, Josephine Chrostowski of Brentwood, N.H., Veronica Kazak of Springfield, Mary Wilk of Schenectady, N.Y., Irene Janowski of Auburn, Mass., and Theresa Janowski of Cavendish; four grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Janowski.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Cavendish Village cemetery.
Friends may call at Davis Memorial Chapel on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Stephen L. Lobdell
SPRINGFIELD — Stephen L. Lobdell, longtime resident of Springfield, Vt., passed away in Ocala, Fla., on July 1, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He worked for many years at the Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield before beginning his own business as an Engineering Manufacturer’s Representative.
In 1987 he and his wife, Arlene moved to Ocala, becoming an integral part of the retirement community there.
His daughter, Jane Chicoine, her husband, James, and their children, Justin and Jennifer, of Underhill, Vt., and his son, Richard Lobdell, wife Regina, and children Kristin and Corey, of Springfield, Vt., survive him. His wife predeceased him in 1996.
A memorial service will be held at the Masonic Temple on Main Street in Springfield, VT on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at 2 p.m.
Beatrice C. Lannon
LUDLOW — Beatrice C. Lannon, 97, died at the Gill Home on Aug. 1, 2002, after a long illness.
She was born in Malone, N.Y., in 1905, daughter of Clement and Priscilla Coburn, and moved to Ludlow at the age of 10. She was educated in Ludlow elementary schools and Black River Academy.
She married
Harold Lannon and owned and operated Lannon’s Restaurant with her husband until his death. She continued to operate the restaurant with her son until they sold the restaurant.
She later worked as a cook at the Gill Home until her retirement. She lived alone in Ludlow until she entered the Gill Home three years ago.
Mrs. Lannon was a communicant of the Church of Annunciation; a member of the Black River Grange, and a member of American Legion Auxiliary.
She enjoyed sewing and knitting, and crafts. She was an avid Red Sox and Boston Celtics fan.
Survivors are a son, William H. Lannon of Ludlow; a brother, Arthur Coburn of West Yarmouth, Mass.; a sister, Kathryn Wilson of Fort Myers, Fla.; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by three brothers, Francis and Bert, Watson Coburn, and two sisters, Bessie Atkins and Marion Cardwell.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Church of Annunciation.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Adams and Kenney Funeral Home.
Carolyn V. Brown
LUDLOW — Carolyn “Lynn” Van Winkle Brown, 66, of Ludlow and Pittsford, N.Y., died June 20, 2002, at her home in Pittsford after a 6½ -year battle with breast cancer.
A lifelong summer resident of Ludlow, she was born Dec. 7, 1935, daughter of Edward Van Winkle of Stone Ridge, N.Y., and Hazel Lyon of Barre.
She attended Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y., and Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass.
In her youth, she was an organizer of the popular “Teen Age Club” on Lake Rescue near Ludlow, a group which for several years met weekly to stage summer social events for young people around the lakes.
She was active in the Lake Rescue Association serving as secretary to the board of directors for the past ten years and as publisher of the organization’s newsletter, Lake Breezes. She was a life member of the Black River Historical Society.
Mrs. Brown was a leader in youth and alpine ski racing activities, and was the first woman to head the Eastern Ski Association’s Alpine Competition Committee of the U.S. Ski Association, then headquartered in Bennington.
She was also named to represent the Eastern United States as a member of the National Alpine Committee of USSA, receiving a special commendation award for her efforts on behalf of youth skiing from USSA, and also the Burkett-Dodge Award for outstanding service over 20 years of alpine officiating.
She was chief of accreditations for alpine events for the 1980 Winter Games at Lake Placid. She helped raise more than half a million dollars to support Olympic athletes and the ski team.
Survivors are her husband of 48 years, Glenn Brown; three children, Derek Brown of Santa Cruz, Calif., Wendy Muller von Blumencron of Hamburg, Germany, and Bradley Brown of Boulder Creek, and a granddaughter.

Frances H. Roberts
SPRINGFIELD — Frances H. Roberts, 82, formerly of Hill Place, died Aug. 1, 2002, at Gill Odd Fellows Home in Ludlow, following a long illness.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Davis Memorial Chapel.

SPRINGFIELD — The graveside service for Connie M. Carey, 64, who died Feb. 10, 2002 was held Aug. 2, 2002, in Oakland cemetery.
The Rev. William Scherwerts, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated.
Arrangements were under the direction of Davis Memorial Chapel.
Arnold Cooley
MIDDLEBURY — Arnold Robert Cooley, 66, died Friday, August 2, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington following a long illness.
He was born in Sharon, Vt. on Sept. 23, 1935, son of Don F. and Florence (Mason) Cooley.
He married
Elise Carter in 1956.
Mr. Cooley came to Middlebury in 1960 with the Shepard Corporation. He worked for 30 years in the plumbing and heating field employed by Dundons Plumbing and Heating, Murphy’s Metals. He retired from the U.S. Forestry Dept. in 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Elise, of Middlebury; one daughter, Donna Kerr of Goshen; two sons, Dorran Cooley of Brandon, Todd Cooley of Rutland; one brother, David Cooley of Whitefield, N.H., and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Chandler Cooley.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. in the East Middlebury United Methodist Church. Graveside committal services and burial will follow in Prospect cemetery, East Middlebury.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sanderson Funeral Home, South Main St., Middlebury, Vt.
