Frank Duckworth

VIENNA, Va. — Frank Duckworth, the former corporate secretary, vice president and general counsel of Pfizer Inc., died in his home in Vienna, Va., on July 26, 2002. Mr. Duckworth had also served as president of the Food and Drug Law Institute in Washington, D.C., upon his retirement from Pfizer. Most recently, he enjoyed the challenge of running a company he founded, Efficient Portfolios of Falls Church, Va.

Mr. Duckworth received a degree in pharmacy from the University of Florida in 1942.

Following service with the Army Air Corps during World War II, he earned a J.D. degree from the University of Florida in 1948. Mr. Duckworth then taught in the College of Pharmacy at the university before earning a master of law degree from New York University in 1954 and beginning his distinguished career with Pfizer.

Mr. Duckworth served the legal community in many ways. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and served on the Board of Directors for the Fund for Modern Courts, a group organized to improve the court system in the state of New York. He chaired two sections of the New York State Bar Association, Food, Drug and Cosmetic Law and Corporate Counsel. Mr. Duckman also served on the board of the Legal Aid Society of New York.

Mr. Duckworth was preceded in death by his mother, Cora Howell, and father, Frank Duckworth, and stepfather, Marvin Howell. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Katherine Alexander Duckworth; his son, John Duckworth, and his son’s wife, Hoye, and their children, Sara and Alex of Roanoke, Va.; his daughter, Katherine R. Duckworth, and her children, Rebecca and Austin Johntra of Manchester Center, Vt.

The Rev. Leo Hourihan will lead a memorial service at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Ave., Vienna, Va., on Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at 11 a.m. A graveside service will be held in Quitman, Ga. Mr. Duckworth’s boyhood home, on Monday, July 29, at 3 p.m.

The family suggests that contributions may be made to the University of Florida School of Pharmacy, P.O. Box 103570, Gainesville, Fla. 32610, or the Fredric Levin College of Law, University of Florida, P.O. Box 117623, Gainesville, Fla., 32611.

Jane B. Bullard

WEATHERSFIELD — Jane B. Bullard, 79, died July 27, 2002, at her home following a lengthy illness.

She was born March 16, 1923, in Orange, N.J., the daughter of Chester and Evelyn (Van Wie) Billings. She attended schools in Virginia.

She married Robinson D. Bullard on Aug. 21, 1959, in Weathersfield. He died in 1991.

She made her home on the Spencer Hollow Road in Springfield for several years and had lived in Weathersfield since 1960. She and her husband owned and operated the Bullard Machine Co. for many years.

She was a longtime member and past president of the First Congregational Church of Weathersfield, and she also was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Springfield.

Survivors include a son, John H. Bullard of Ogunquit, Maine; three daughters, Suzy Yancy of Perkinsville; Weeza Sanderson of East Burke, and Judy Bullard of Scarborough, Maine; three brothers, Lawrence B. Woolson of Springfield, Richard Billings of Arlington, Va., and Chester Billings Jr. of New Canaan, Conn.; a sister, Susan Banker; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A private family graveside service will take place at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division Inc., 18 Loomis St., Montpelier, 05602.

The Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield is in charge of arrangements.

Richard C. Pierce

SPRINGFIELD — Richard C. Pierce, 81, died July 27, 2002, at Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.

Funeral arrangements are pending, and

Julia M. Paul

WILDER — Julia Marise Paul, 59, died July 26, 2002, at her home in Wilder.

She was born Nov. 14, 1942, in Heber Springs, Ark., daughter of J.C. and Lillie Fay (Thacker) Smith.

She graduated from Rose Bud High School in Rose Bud, Ark., and then from Capital City Business School in Little Rock, Ark.

She married John T. Paul Oct. 14, 1961, in Rose Bud, and moved to Wilder in 1963, where she has lived since.

Mrs. Paul worked in the SPD department at the Veteran’s Administration in White River Junction for 15 years before retiring.

She was a member of the Wilder Women’s Club.

She was an avid gardener and enjoyed sewing, camping with her grandchildren and ocean cruises.

She is survived by her husband of Wilder; her mother of Searcy, Ark.; two daughters, Teresa Dupree of Lebanon, N.H., and Johna Paul of Keswick, Va.; three granddaughters; two nephews and two nieces.

Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction Tuesday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. A graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Christian Street cemetery in Wilder.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, Attention: Pediatrics Oncology, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, N.H. 03756.

Robert L. Sawyer

TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Robert L. Sawyer, 84, formerly of Pomfret, died March 25, 2002, at Bridge View Estates nursing home in Twin Falls of Parkinson’s disease, which he had had for 35 years.

He was born May 9, 1918, in Vermont, the son of Florence and Harland Sawyer. He spent his youth and young adult years in Vermont.

In 1938 he married Florence Mills.

While in Vermont, he owned and operated his own machine company for 12 years. In 1962, he and his family moved to San Jose, Calif., where he worked for Lockheed and later, Hewlet Packard. He retired from Hewlet Packard in 1973 because of an early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, when he was 50 years old.

He took part in three different research programs at Stanford University and in Redding, Calif., that tested new treatments for Parkinson’s. He and his wife became active in community support groups for families with Parkinson’s.

In 1990, the Sawyers moved to Hailey to be close to family members.

He took part in a handicapped riding program for nine years. He entered an assisted living program in December 2000.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Roberta Sawyer-Betts of Ketchum; a son, Gary Sawyer of Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, George Sawyer of New Hampshire; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Hewittville cemetery in Pomfret.

The Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock is in charge of local arrangements.

Louise M. Richardson

FAIRLEE — Louise M. Richardson, 75, died July 26, 2002, at her home.

She was born April 12, 1927, in Framingham, Mass., the daughter of Lawrence and Marie (Demarino) Zizza. She was educated in Medfield, Mass., schools and was a 1949 graduate of Framingham State College, where she received a degree in education.

She was married to Lyman Richardson, who died in 1951.

From 1952 through 1982, Mrs. Richardson was a teacher in the Medfield school system, and was active in revising the science curriculum and developing the arts curriculum. Since 1954, she worked at summer camps. In the early 1960s, she purchased a summer home in Orford, N.H., and worked most summers with the Aloha Foundation in Fairlee, Vt. In 1982 she moved to Fairlee and was a teacher with the Orange East Supervisory Union. She taught fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students at Fairlee Elementary School, as well as learning-disabled children of all ages. Since 1994, she had been a substitute teacher in the Orange East and Rivendell school districts.

Mrs. Richardson was a founding member of the Rivendell School Board. She was recently honored for her 50 years of teaching and dedication to children.

Survivors include a son, Lawrence of Fairlee; a sister, Ruth McCarthy of West Dennis, Mass.; and nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held today at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Bradford with the Rev. Omer St. Onge officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlee Village cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Donations in Mrs. Richardson’s memory may be made to the Fairlee Scholarship Fund in care of Lisa Hinsley, Fairlee Town Treasurer, P.O. Box 95, Fairlee, 05045, or the Aloha Foundation Scholarship Fund for Needy Children, 2968 Lake Morey Road, Fairlee, 05405.

The Hale Funeral Home in Bradford is in charge of arrangements.

Charles E. Zeno Rites

MIDDLEBURY — The graveside funeral service for Charles Edward Zeno, 57, who died July 25, 2002, was held Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Prospect cemetery in East Middlebury. Chaplain Charlotte Phillips officiated.

Military services were provided by members of Middlebury American Legion Post 27 and Middlebury VFW Post 7823.

The Sanderson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Roger P. Young

Roger Paul Young, 53, formerly of Brandon, died July 31, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Swanton Aug. 29, 1948, the son of Norman and Elizabeth (Lamita) Young.

He had been a resident of Rutland since 1966.

Mr. Young had worked in food service at Rutland Regional Medical Center for more than 23 years.

Survivors include three brothers, Lawrence Young of South Burlington, Gilbert Young of Swanton and Norman Young of Carlsbad, N.M.; a niece and several cousins.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Miller and Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. Richard White, pastor of Brandon Congregational Church, will officiate.

Burial will follow in Pine Hill cemetery.

Garfield H. Fay

GOSHEN — Garfield Harrison Fay, 90, died July 30, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Goshen on June 8, 1912, the son of Walter and Lillie (Barnard) Fay, and received his early education in local Goshen schools.

In earlier years he had worked the iron mines in Mineville, N.Y., and drove school bus for the town of Goshen for several years. He retired in 1977 following more than 30 years of service for Central Vermont Public Service Corp.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lodge 25, F&AM, in Brandon, Farmers Chapter 9 and Farmers Council 9 Royal Arch Masons. He belonged to Mount Calvary Commandery in Middlebury.

Mr. Fay had served the town of Goshen as fire warden for more than 40 years, and had also served as a lister for several years. He was a member of the Board of Civil Authority and was a justice of the peace.

He was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a son, Roland G. Fay of Rutland; four daughters, Alice P. Johnson of Richmond, Va., Annette Napsey of Springfield, Arlene Hunt of Brandon, and Martha Bissonnette of Goshen; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a niece.

His wife, Evelyn B. Fay, whom he married Oct. 6, 1936, died in 1985. He was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Heidi Fay.

The funeral service will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Miller and Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon with the Rev. Richard White, pastor of Brandon Congregational Church. Burial will follow in Forest Dale cemetery where members of St. Paul’s Masonic Lodge 25 will conduct their service.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Paul’s Masonic Lodge 25, 52 Pearl St., Brandon, 05733, or the Addison County Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, 05753.

Philip Dalton

GRANVILLE, N.Y. — Philip Dalton, 68, died July 18, 2002, at his residence.

He was born July 17, 1934, the son of Thomas and Mary (Lloyd) Dalton.

Mr. Dalton lived in West Pawlet, Vt., for many years before moving to Granville.

He was an active member of the Mettowee Valley Senior Citizens.

The graveside service will be conducted Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel cemetery with Deacon John Glennon presiding.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert M. King Funeral Home.

Jack McGaughey Jr.

BOMOSEEN — Jack McGaughey Jr., 77, of Bomoseen and Brownwood, Texas, died July 29, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Bangs, Texas, Feb. 11, 1925, the son of Jack and Arda (Eiland) McGaughey Sr.

He was a veteran of World War II.

Mr. McGaughey was employed by Texon Inc., retiring years ago.

Surviving is his wife, Florence McGaughey of Bomoseen and Brownwood.

The funeral services will be held Saturday in Brownwood. Burial will follow in Bangs cemetery.

Local arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
