Carol A. Haskell
SHAFTSBURY — Carol A. Haskell, 55, died July 20, 2002, at her residence.
She was born Aug. 17, 1946, in Bennington, the daughter of Kenneth and Ruth (Rice) Thomas.
She graduated from North Bennington High School in 1965.
She married
Edward Haskell on June 23, 1972, in Bennington.
Mrs. Haskell operated a home daycare center for 28 years.
She enjoyed swimming.
Survivors include her husband of Shaftsbury; a daughter, Lynn Haskell of Rutland; a son, Christopher Lindsey of Manchester, N.H.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Morse of Pownal and Joyce Lanoue of Bennington; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Deborah Trolenberg, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Shaftsbury, officiating. Burial will follow in Village cemetery in Shaftsbury.
Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Betty M. Wheat
BENNINGTON — Betty Marie Wheat, 79, died July 22, 2002, at her residence.
She was born March 19, 1923, in Hutchinson, Kan., the daughter of Paul and Gladys (Irvin) Carter.
She received her education in Springfield, Mo., and graduated from Drury College in Springfield.
She married
Richard Wheat on Aug. 5, 1944. He died in 1998.
Mrs. Wheat had been employed as the director of sales for Masoneilan International in Massachusetts.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Norwood, Mass.
She enjoyed gardening, decorating, traveling, reading and sewing.
Survivors include a son, Bruce Wheat of Pownal with whom she lived; a daughter, Linda McClentic of Rockland, Mass.; a brother, Bobby Carter of Little Rock, Ark.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral service and burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.

Candida Gigante
BRATTLEBORO — Candida “Candy” Gigante, 83, died July 21, 2002, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 11, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Michael and Mary (Pesce) Santomauro.
She graduated from Utrecht High School in New York.
She married
Michael Gigante on Oct. 12, 1946, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mrs. Gigante had been employed in the offices of Dr. Rothman in Brooklyn, N.Y., during the 1940s.
She was a former communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wittaker, Mich., and was a member of the Blessed Virgin’s Solidarity in the parish. She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Brattleboro.
She enjoyed painting, ceramics and gardening. She was known for her Italian cooking, especially her lasagna.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Michael Gigante of Brattleboro; a daughter, Phyllis Gigante of Belleville, Mich.; two brothers, John Santomauro of Lakeland, Fla., and Anthony Santomauro of New Jersey; a granddaughter, a grandson, four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Phyllis Sarlo; and a brother, Joseph Santomauro who died in action during World War II.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Brattleboro. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Catholic cemetery in Whittaker, Mich.
Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Atamaniuk, Funeral Home.

Eugene D. Wadsworth
MANCHESTER — A memorial service for Eugene D. Wadsworth, 89, who died July 20, 2002, will be held Monday, July 29 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Chapel in Manchester Village , with the Rev. John Mitchell, pastor, officiating. Following the service, Mr. Wadsworth’s cremated remains will be buried in Dellwood cemetery in Manchester Village.
There will be no calling hours.

GASSETTS — The funeral service for Regina A. Newton, 90, who died July 18, 2002, was held Monday at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester with the Rev. Jane Buswell officiating. Burial followed in Pleasantview cemetery in Chester.
Pallbearers were James Goodrich, Barry Goodrich, Gregory Goodrich, Paul Newton and Brian Newton. Honorary bearer was Carlene Goodrich.

Craig F. Reid Rites
CHESTER — The funeral service for Craig F. Reid, 81, who died July 14, 2002, was held Saturday at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester, with the Rev. David Armstrong officiating. Burial followed in Pleasantview cemetery in Chester.
American Legion of Ludlow and Chester and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Springfield provided military honors.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester.
Ethel M. Ash Rites
WEST FAIRLEE — The funeral service for Ethel Mae Ash, 75, who died July 17, 2002, was held Monday at the West Fairlee Church with the Rev. Roger Daum officiating. Burial followed in Post Mills cemetery.
Organist was Donald Fifield.
Bearers were Brother Eastman, Brian Comstock, Paul Eastman and Kevin Cummings.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Hale Funeral Homes of Bradford and Thetford.
Alta Elithorpe
SALISBURY — Alta Elithorpe, 67, died July 22, 2002.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Sanderson Funeral Service in Middlebury.
Barney D. Ballard
FAIR HAVEN — Barney D. Ballard, Jr., 70, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Ballard was born in Benson on March 6, 1932, son of Bernard D. and Elizabeth (Burke) Ballard, Sr.
He was educated in Benson and Hubbardton Schools.
He worked at Abel Tire in Rutland for more than 20 years. Earlier, he was employed as a quarryman at Vermont Marble Company.
He married
Elinor Mitchell on February 14, 1998 in Rutland.
He enjoyed hunting.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Stanley Ballard of Fla; one daughter, Debra Guyette of Rutland; three stepsons, Worden Mitchell and Moses Mitchell of Rutland, Isaac Mitchell of Ripton; three stepdaughters, Millicent Mitchell, Whitney Lee and Anne Merrill, all of Rutland; two brothers, Geral Ballard of Rutland and Theodore Ballard of Hubbardton; two sisters, Louise Penders of Milton, and Marion Woodbury of Castleton; 15 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at The Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Cedar Grove cemetery.
Calling hours are Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Beverly Baker Jennings
BRIDGEWATER — Beverly Baker Jennings, 45, died July 25, 2002 at the Gifford Memorial Hospital in Randolph, Vt after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born November 4, 1956, in Windsor, Vt., daughter of Walter Baker, Sr. and Doris (Archer) Baker
She graduated from Woodstock Union High School in 1975.
She worked at Rider Student Transportation in Nashua, N.H. most recently, Earlier she worked for the Marble Bank and P&C Foods in Woodstock.
Beverly was an avid bingo player and a member of the Nashua Cribbage Club.
She enjoyed spending time with family.
She is survived by her father, Walter Baker, of Quechee, Vt, and her mother, Doris Archer Baker of Woodstock, Vt; three sisters, Rachel Archer of Bridgewater, Vt, Jean Johnson and Janet Webb of Barnard, Vt; one brother, Walter Baker, Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Methodist cemetery Extension on the North Road in Barnard, Vt.
Calling hours will be Sunday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Cabot Funeral Home, 1 Rose Hill, Woodstock, Vt.

NEW YORK CITY — Page P. Reynolds, 41, formerly of Rutland, died July 27, 2002, in Cabrini Hospital in New York.
She was born Jan. 5, 1961, in Rutland, the daughter of Mrs. Edward L’Esperance Dyer.
She graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy. She attended San Diego Community College and the University of California at San Diego.
She worked as a freelance model in New York City for many years.
Survivors include her mother of Mendon and a sister, Stacy Dyer DePinto of West Rutland.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Tossing Funeral Home. Burial will be in Tenney cemetery in Mendon.
There will be no calling hours.

Lawrence G. Pelkey Rites
FAIR HAVEN — A funeral Mass for Lawrence G. “Larry” Pelkey, 91, who died July 24, 2002, was held Saturday at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven. The Rev. Richard W. Tinney, parish priest, officiated. Burial followed in Cedar Grove cemetery in Fair Haven.
Organist was Nancy Wetherby, assisted by the church choir. Special music selections were played on the flute by Mr. Pelkey’s grandson, Sherman Levesque.
Readers were his niece, Ann Marie Pelkey, and great-granddaughter, Andrea Way.
Bearers were Andrea Way, Eric Way, Alan Way, Kevin Levesque, David Holt and David Sharp.
The Rev. Tinney conducted a wake service at the Durfee Funeral Home on Friday.
