Jennette H. Prouty

Jennette H. Prouty, 88, a resident of Reston, Va., and Newport, Vt., died May 31, 2002.

She was born Sept. 8, 1913, in Clarkson, Ohio.

She married U.S. Sen. Winston L. Prouty of Vermont in 1962. He died in 1971.

Mrs. Prouty moved to Virginia in 1950 and held positions on Capital Hill as assistant to then Rep. Henry Latham of New York and later administrative assistant to Rep. Robert Cook of Ohio.

She was active in the Senate Wives’ Club, the International Club and the Congressional Club, which she served as president in 1969-1970.

She was active with the Vermont Chapter of the American Lung Association and American Red Cross. Her principle charity was the Winston L. Prouty Center for Child Development in Brattleboro, Vt.

She was an avid golfer.

Survivors include a son, Robert Hall of Great Falls, Va.; and three grandsons.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Hall in 1959.

The funeral service will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Georgetown Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. Burial will follow in National Memorial Park in Falls Church, Va. A celebration will be held at her son’s home, 308 Sinegar Place, Sterling, Va.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Gawlers & Sons Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Winston L. Prouty Center for Child Development, 10 Oak St., Brattleboro, Vt., 05301, or Georgetown Presbyterian Church, 3115 P Street N.W., Washington, D.C.

Alice H. Collins

WALLINGFORD — Alice H. Collins, 91, a longtime resident of Tinmouth, died May 31, 2002, at Eden Park Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 25, 1910, in Danby, the daughter of Myron and Eva (Phillips) Sherman.

Mrs. Collins was a member of Tinmouth Community Church.

She enjoyed quilting.

Survivors include three daughters, Marjorie LaFrancis of West Rutland, Margaret Brown of Wallingford and Frances Scales of Mount Holly; two sons, Harold Collins of Burlington and James Collins of Tinmouth; two brothers, Arthur Sherman and Edward Sherman, both of Tinmouth; 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Collins; a daughter, Gloria Mae Davenport; four sisters, Lettie Ricketts, Nellie Bushee, Beatrice Smith and Goldie Bushman.

The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Wallingford-Aldous Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Green Hill cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eden Park Nursing Home Activities Fund, 99 Allen St., Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wallingford-Aldous Funeral Home.

Dorothy S. Burgess

ITHACA, N.Y. — Dorothy S. Burgess, 87, of Bella Vista Drive, formerly of Dryden and Hamilton, N.Y., passed away Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca, N.Y., following a brief illness.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Carol Burgess of Freeville, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Janipher and Robert Ripley of Brandon, Vt.; a brother, Ronald “Pete” Snyder of Morrisville, N.Y.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 3, 2002, from the Dryden United Methodist Church, 2 North St., Dryden, N.Y. Burial with O.E.S. services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the Woodlawn cemetery, Hamilton, N.Y.

Contributions in her memory may be made to My Brother’s Keeper, in care of the Dryden United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 193, Dryden, N.Y., 13053; or to the Memorial Fund of Longview, in care of Nancy Brown, Bella Vista Dr., Ithaca, N.Y., 14850.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burgess Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton, N.Y.

Larry E. Hill Rites

BRANDON — The funeral service for Larry Evin Hill, 41, who died May 26, 2002, was held Thursday at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon with Gary C. Stanley, a family friend, officiating. A private burial followed on Friday in Pleasant Hill cemetery in Cornwall.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Janetta P. Deveau

BRIDGEWATER CORNERS — Janetta P. Deveau, 61, died May 29, 2002, at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction.

She was born Jan. 22, 1941, in Plymouth, the daughter of Lawrence and Gladis (Sanderson) Lynds.

She grew up in Plymouth and married John Deveau on May 8, 1976. He died in 1987.

Mrs. Deveau worked at the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation for 10 years.

Survivors include her caregivers, Doris and Carroll Earle and Debra Oldenburg, all of Bridgewater Corners, Mark Earle of Jerritt, Va., and Nathan Earle of Partland, Maine; three brothers, Robert Lynds and Glenn Lynds, both of Plymouth; and John Lynds of Bridgewater Corners; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Arthur and Ray Lynds.

The graveside service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in Plymouth Notch cemetery with the Rev. Gwenn Groff, pastor of the Bethany Menonite Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the Woodstock Visiting Nurses, 32 Pleasant St., Woodstock, 05091.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Arthur W. James

HARTLAND — Arthur W. “Lefty” James, 83, died March 28, 2002, at the Vermont Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction.

He was born April 9, 1918, in Worcester, Mass.

He graduated from Lunenburg, Mass., High School in 1936.

Mr. James moved to Windsor and was employed at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in research and development for 38 years, retiring in 1974.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, joining the Army in 1941. He attended Infantry Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., and Fort Bragg, N.C. He was company commander of 1542 Commanded Infantry Rifle Company in Normandy, and later in France, Belgium and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Silver Star. He was also awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Infantry War Badge and ETO Ribbon with four Campaign Stars. When the Korean War started, he commanded Company 486, Windsor National Guard. He retired as a major in the U.S. Army in 1978.

Mr. James was a member of the First Congregational Church in Hartland and sang in the church choir. He was also a member of the Hartland School Board and American Legion Post 48 in Hartland.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Foster Patriquin James of Hartland; two daughters, Janice Willey of Hinesburg and Barbara Hunt of Hartland; five stepchildren, Marcia Newcomb of Arrowsic, Maine, Kevin Patriquin of Riverside, Calif., Robert Patriquin of Manchester, N.H., Edward Patriquin of Wilder and Thomas Patriquin of Lindenhurst, N.Y.; two sisters, Marion Strakoze and Alice Rose of Deland, Fla.; four grandchildren, 13 step grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one step great-grandson; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Emily Arrell and Mildred Doolittle; and two brothers, Francis Doolittle and James Doolittle.

The memorial service will be held Friday, June 7, at 1 p.m. at the Vermont Military Memorial Chapel in Randolph with the Rev. Robert W.W. Moyer officiating.

Prior to the service in Randolph, a gathering for family and friends will be held downstairs in the First Congregational Church in Hartland from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Coffee and refreshments will be served.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Hartland Fire Department or the Hartland Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 403, Hartland, 05048, or the Windsor War Memorial Fund, in care of Mascoma Savings Bank, 107 Main St., Windsor, 05089, Attn: Terry W. Allen.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor.

Flora M. Roberts

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Flora M. Roberts, 75, died May 31, 2002, at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction.

She was born Oct. 10, 1926, in Rochester, the daughter of Frank and Celia (Smith) Lingard.

She graduated from Portsmouth Technical College School of Nursing in 1968.

She married John Roberts on Aug. 25, 1945 in Maine. They later moved to White River Junction.

Mrs. Roberts was employed at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction, retiring in 1993 after 23 years of service.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Lambert of White River Junction; two brothers, Frank Lingard of Rochester, N.Y., and Paul Lingard of Oakland, Fla.; two sisters, Elva Steckis of Manchester, N.H., and Celia Cooley of Lempster, N.H.; two grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1998; three brothers, Ray Lingard, Elmer Lingard and Ivan Lingard; and a sister, Effie Whittier.

Friends may call Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brookside Nursing Home Activities Fund, 120 Christian St., White River Junction, 05001.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Lewis E. Stratton

BENNINGTON — Lewis E. Stratton, 88, died May 31, 2002, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 25, 1913, in Bennington, the son of Frank and Josephine (Renick) Stratton.

He received his education in Bennington schools.

Mr. Stratton married Beatrice Paquin on Aug. 18, 1939, in Bennington.

He was employed as a union carpenter for various firms in the area.

He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners.

Mr. Stratton enjoyed cabinetmaking, hunting and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of Bennington; two sons, Richard Stratton of Beacon, N.Y., and Peter Stratton of Bennington; two daughters, Diane Urfer of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., and Beatrice Welch of Bennington; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Stratton; three sisters, Caroline Becker, Lillian Watson and Jennie Myers; and a brother, Norman Stratton.

The funeral service will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with a prayer, and continue at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. with a Mass celebrated by the Rev. Vincent J. Coppola, CSC, associate pastor. Burial will follow in White Chapel cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. The wake service will take place at 4 p.m.

Katherine Roberts

OLD BENNINGTON — Katherine “Kit” King Roberts, 79, died May 30, 2002, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Franklin, Va., the daughter of Elizabeth (Judkins) and Joseph King.

She attended Longwood Teachers College in Farmville, Va., and later returned to Franklin, Va., to attend business school and work as a bank teller.

She married Arthur Roberts on Aug. 10, 1946.

Mrs. Roberts served as a house mother for the SAE fraternity and operated a sandwich business at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. She and her husband restored colonial homes in Brookfield, Conn., Gilsum, N.H., and Arlington. Later, she and her husband purchased the Shea Agency Insurance and Real Estate business, where she worked in accounts management.

She was a member of the Old First Church in Old Bennington, the Bennington Garden Club and Plain Dirt Gardeners. She was also a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and PTA.

Mrs. Roberts enjoyed duplicate bridge, traveling, flower arranging competition and making floral arrangements for the church and friends. She made soup and delivered to the shut-ins. She was also an excellent seamstress.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Katherine Satterthwaite of Bennington, Joan Graves of Putney and Martha Sargent of Shaftsbury; five grandchildren and a grandson; three nieces and three nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph King Jr. in 1985; and a nephew.

The memorial service will be held Sunday, June 9, at 1 p.m. at the Old First Church in Old Bennington.

Friends may call Sunday, June 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Robert’s home at 42 Monument Ave., Old Bennington.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Garden Club, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.
