Virginia S. Jerome Rites
BENNINGTON — The memorial service for Susan Fuller Jerome, who died May 21, 2002, and her daughter, Virginia Sheldon Jerome, who died May 22, 2002, was celebrated Sunday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bennington with the Rev. Arthur Kingdon, rector, and the Rev. Penny Hawkins officiating. Burial followed in Old Bennington Centre cemetery.
Organist was Anne Marcure.
A remembrance gathering for friends and family was held at Mount Anthony Country Club following the service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
Harry F. Newville
VERGENNES — Harry F. Newville, 80, died June 2, 2002, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.
He was born Aug. 11, 1921, in Shoreham, the son of Fredrick and Mabel (Brileya) Newville.
He was employed in the Iron Ore Mines in Whitherbee, N.Y., and later moved to Vermont to farm.
Mr. Newville was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Josephine (Jerome) Newville of Vergennes; a son, Barry Newville of Rutland; three daughters, Ann Whitney of Port Henry, N.Y., Cheryl Pouliot of Shoreham and Donna Chaplin of Milton; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ken Newville of Shoreham; four sisters, Ruth Jerome, Geraldine Trudo, Genny Nuttall, all of Vergennes and Veda Haskins of Mineville, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes.
Mary L. Kelly
FERRISBURGH — Mary Louise Kelly, 93, died June 2, 2002, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.
She was born Aug. 26, 1908, in New York City, the daughter of David and Fannie (Austin) Kelly.
She graduated from Colby College and received a master’s degree from Columbia University Teachers College.
She taught school in various private schools in New York City for six years, in Saranac Lake, N.Y., for 10 years and retired from Lyman Hunt School in Burlington. She also operated the roadside stand at Ferrimont Orchard in Ferrisburgh for many years with her brother and two sisters.
Survivors include a brother, Wilfred Kelly of Vergennes; and a niece and nephew.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Estelle in 1985 and Ruth in 1995.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the New Haven United Reform Church.
Contributions may be made to New Haven United Reform Church, 1660 Ethan Allen Highway, New Haven, 05472.

Marvin Fay Benson Jr.
LUDLOW — Marvin Fay Benson Jr., 65, died June 2, 2002, at Dartmouth Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was a member of the Boy Scouts of American and was the second man to become an Eagle Scout in Ludlow, Vt.
He was lifetime member of the Rotary Club and received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
He was born October 3, 1936, the son of the late Marvin “Fay” Benson Sr. and Monica (Lamere) Benson. He graduated from Black River High School. He served in the United States Navy as a meteorologist during the Korean War.
He was a partner of Benson’s Chevrolet.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing, sugaring and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his mother, Monica; a brother, George Benson; and a sister, Anita; two sons, Randolf John Benson Sr. and Martin Lee Benson and wife, Roxi Lyn Benson; and one daughter, SueAnne (Benson) Starr, all from Ludlow, Vt.; and nine grandchildren, Randolf John “RJ” Benson Jr., Jason Lee Benson, Brandie E. Starr, ToniMarie Starr, Andrew Justin Starr, Stacia Lyn Durrand, Olga Marie Carey, Lindsay, Calista; and two great-grandchildren, CJ Carey and Bailey Carey.
He was predeceased by his father; his sister, Paula Seal; and a grandson, Scott A. Starr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Church of the Annunciation at 1 p.m. Committal will follow at Pleasantview cemetery in Ludlow. Calling hours are Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to HOPE, in care of Lisa Scully, 6 Pond Street, Ludlow, Vt., 05149.

Lillian A. Ferguson
Lillian A. Ferguson, 86, of Rutland, died June 3, 2002, at Haven Health Care Center.
She was born April 4, 1916, in Rutland, the daughter of Collins and Emma (Cunningham) Warren.
She was a member of Christ the King Church.
Survivors include four sons, Richard Ferguson of Fair Haven, William Ferguson Jr. of Hampton, N.Y., Thomas Ferguson of Rutland and James Willis of Pittsford; three daughters, Dorothy Falco of West Rutland, Barbara Oney of Florence and Patricia Roundy of Rutland; 23 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Ferguson, in 1988; and two sisters, Mary Mossey and Helen Drinwater.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Church. Burial will follow in Calvary cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home.

Jane G. Bruce
WALLINGFORD — Jane G. Bruce, 66, died June 4, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Calling hours will be held Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wallingford-Aldous Funeral Home.
Services are pending for Friday.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Wallingford-Aldous Funeral Home.
James J. Gianola
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — James J. Gianola, 82, died June 3, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Proctor, Vt., the son of Marie (Giannini) and John Gianola.
He graduated from Bay Path College in 1940.
Mr. Gianola was employed at American Bosch in Springfield as an operations manager, retiring after 37 years of service.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater.
He was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in Springfield, and had been a member of the church choir and the Holy Cross Golden Agers. He was also a member of the Melody Boys singing group and was past president of Western Massachusetts Data Processing Management Association.
Mr. Gianola enjoyed music and was a self-taught organist.
Survivors include his wife, Marie (Ciccone) of Springfield; a son, James Gianola Jr. of West Peabody; a daughter, Jean Leonard of Fairfax, Va.; two brothers, Antonio Gianola of Warwick, R.I., and Christian Gianola of White Plains, N.Y.; two sisters, Carmen Gianola of Proctor, Vt., and Armenia Hallisley of Nashua, N.H.; and four grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 8 a.m. assembling at the Forastiere Smith Funeral Home and continue at Holy Cross Church with Mass at 9 a.m.. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home in East Longmeadow.

Elizabeth D. Sumner
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Elizabeth Doty Sumner, 92, died June 2, 2002, in Daytona.
She was born Aug. 4, 1909, in Rose Hill, Jasper County, Ill., the daughter of George and Eliza (King) Doty.
She attended school in Daytona and graduated from high school in Willow Hill, Ill., in 1927. She attended nursing school in St. Louis, Mo., and received her X-ray training at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, Ill. She became the first female X-ray technician at Fort Sill, Okla., during World War II.
She married
Capt. A. Dean Sumner of Danby, Vt., where they lived for many years before moving to Culpeper, Va., and later New Smyrna Beach.
Mrs. Sumner was a retired X-ray technician, and worked as a volunteer for the American Field Service and Up With People in Culpeper, Va. She was a member of the Brandy Station Garden Club, Culpeper Women’s Club, Home Demonstration, Aglow Women’s Fellowship, DAR and the Virginia State Archaeological Society, all in Culpeper. She was also a member of the Christian Life Center in New Smyrna Beach.
Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Fletcher of Daytona Beach Shores and Rice Wagner of New Smyrna Beach; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years in 1995.

Vivian M. Bissitte
The funeral service for Vivian M. Bissitte, 82, of Rutland, who died May 31, 2002, will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

NORTH CLARENDON — The memorial service for Anna Baird, 48, who died June 2, 2002, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Church in Castleton. A reception will follow in the church hall.

Jacob Sherman Infant Rites
The graveside service for Jacob John Sherman, infant son of John Sherman Jr. and Heather Sheridan, who died May 30, 2002, was held Monday in Cedar Grove cemetery in Fair Haven with the Rev. Bruce Bishop, pastor of First Baptist Church in Rutland, officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
Kathryn M. Butler Rites
The funeral service for Kathryn M. Butler, 92, of Rutland, who died June 1, 2002, was held Tuesday at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland with the Rev. Bruce Bishop, pastor of First Baptist Church of Rutland, officiating. Burial followed in Scottsville cemetery in Danby.
Bearers were Timothy Parker, Donald Bruce, Edward Landon and Richard Landon.
