Charles Chehy Sr.
PROCTOR — Charles Chehy Sr., 75, of Proctor, died Tuesday evening at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Proctor on December 11, 1926, the son of John and Cathleen (Forro) Chehy.
Mr. Chehy was a graduate of Proctor High School.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
Mr. Chehy was employed by Vermont Marble Co. in the construction department and later by Callahan Ams Co. in Proctor as an expediter and later by the Rutland Free Library in Rutland, retiring in 1986.
Surviving are his wife, Jean (Ratti) Chehy; a son, Charles J. Chehy Jr. and his wife Deborah Chehy of Proctor; a daughter, Mary Jane Gatti and her husband Vincent of Proctor and a granddaughter, Stephanie Chehy of Proctor. He was predeceased by three brothers, Frederick Chehy, William Chehy and John E. Chehy, who died Feb. 17, 2001; and by two sisters, Rose Moss and Isabel Crowley.
Mr. Chehy was a member of St. Dominic’s Church in Proctor and a member of the Proctor Fire Department for 52 years. He was chief of the department from 1975 to 1986 and has been the secretary and treasurer of the department to the present. He received the honor of Honorary Fire Chief and lifetime member of the department in 1986. In the year 2000 he received an award for 50 years of service to the department and also by the Rutland County Firefighters Association. In 1996 he received an award for Senior Firefighter of the Year by the State Firefighters Association. While he was chief he was instrumental in upgrading improvements to the department and has been named as the man responsible for making the department what it is today.
He is a past president of Rutland County Firefighters Association and a past president of Rutland County Mutual Aid Association.
Mr. Chehy was involved in the Proctor Little League Baseball programs and the Youth basketball programs in the 1960s and the Proctor Sports Booster Club drive of the 1970s.
His biggest enjoyment in his later years was spending time with his granddaughter, Stephanie by playing games in the backyard, helping her with her homework, watching her in the pool and the conversations with her were enjoyable times for him.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Dominic’s Church in Proctor. Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery in Proctor.
There will be no calling hours.
The Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland is in charge of arrangements.

Peter Scott Aborn
Peter Scott Aborn, 44, of Wells, died Wednesday at his home. He was born July 11, 1957, in Yonkers, N.Y., son of Dr. Robert and Natalie (Levin) Aborn.
Mr. Aborn graduated from Rutland High School in 1974, Middlebury College where he received a BA and MA in 1978 and 1980 respectively, and Washington and Lee University where he received a JD in 1982.
He was a French teacher at Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester since 1986.
Mr. Aborn was an avid duplicate bridge player who earned the rank of Life Master, participated in bridge club activities in Manchester and Rutland, and served as editor of the Vermont Bridge Bulletin. He was President of the Burr and Burton Academy Teachers’ Association and was a member of the Vermont NEA. He was also a member of the Rutland Country Club.
His hobbies included Holocaust studies, tennis, music and renovating his family’s 150-year-old home.
Survivors include his wife, Melissa (Michaud) Aborn, whom he married
July 7, 1990, in Hamilton, N.Y.; children, Madeleine, 9, Mariette, 8, and Simon, 6, all of Wells; his parents of Rutland; a sister, Jennifer Hart, brother-in-law, Brad, and niece, Samantha of Rutland; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends may call Thursday, April 11, 2002, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Tossing Funeral Home.
There will be a memorial service in the Riley Center, at Burr and Burton Academy on Friday at 1:15 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland Area Visiting Nurses and Hospice, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, Vt., 05702-0787 or the Aborn Children Trust, Ledyard National Bank, P.O. Box 670, Norwich, Vt., 05055.
There will be a private burial at the convenience of the family.

Richard J. Hedding
ENFIELD, Conn. — Richard John Hedding, 33, died April 10, 2002, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford.
He was born in Hartford, the son of Floyd and Margaret (Liptak) Hedding.
He was a lifelong resident of the Enfield community, and graduated from Enfield High School in 1986.
Mr. Hedding had been employed as a processor at the J.C. Penney Outlet Store in Manchester for several years and had previously worked for R&B Enterprises in Manchester.
Survivors include his parents of Enfield; three brothers, Roy Hedding of Enfield, Raymond Hedding in California and Gary Hedding in Alaska; three sisters, Rosemary Rittner of Manchester, Elaine Massita of Middletown and Charlotte White of Springfield, Vt.; his maternal grandmother, Mary Liptak of Fair Haven, Vt.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral and committal services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapel in Enfield.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 18 North Main St., West Hartford, Conn., 06107.

Mildred H. Fox Rites
The funeral Mass for Mildred H. Fox, 82, of Rutland, who died April 7, 2002, was celebrated Wednesday at Christ the King Church with the Rev. Thomas V. Mattison, assistant pastor, as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Joseph’s cemetery.
Organist was Sister Pauline Gratton and vocalist was Cynthia Wierzbicki.
Bearers were Bert Papineau, Brian Haviland, John Kelly and Howard Papineau.
A prayer service was held Tuesday at the Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Mattison.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
Lucy B. McCuen
BENSON — The memorial service for Lucy Bull McCuen, 87, who died Feb. 16, 2002, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Benson. A private burial will take place at a later date in Fairview cemetery.

Bernice I. Matt
The graveside service for Bernice Irene Matt, 89, of Rutland, who died March 2, 2002, will be held Saturday in St. Joseph’s cemetery with the Rev. Thomas Mattison, assistant pastor at Christ the King Church, officiating.

Lawrence “Stub” G. Rowley
LONDONDERRY — Lawrence “Stub” G. Rowley, 87, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center in Springfield, Vt.
He was born in Londonderry October 8, 1914, the son of George A. Rowley and Louella (Burt) Rowley, and lived there his whole life.
He attended local schools in Londonderry and graduated from Chester High School in 1932. After graduation, he attended Albany Business College and graduated in 1934.
He was employed in the local branch of the Brattleboro Trust Company until it closed. He then was transferred to the main office in Brattleboro where he worked until 1941. He left the banking business to work with his dad in Rowley’s Express Trucking Company in Londonderry. After his father’s death, he ran Rowley’s Express until it dissolved in 1977. He also owned an insurance agency in Londonderry and did tax preparation for many local townspeople.
Stub was the Secretary/Treas-urer of the Vermont Branch of National Star Route Mail Carriers Association and belonged to the Wantastiquet Rotary Club. He was a member of the West River Anchor Masonic Lodge and other Masonic Orders including the Cairo Temple Shrine in Rutland. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon Chapter Order of The Easter Star in Jamaica. He was involved for many years in the Vermont Truck and Bus Company Association. He served on the Credit Committee of the Londonderry Credit Union and was a town auditor. He also served for several years as Deputy Sheriff and was a member and trustee of the Second Congregational Church of Londonderry. He was a member, as well as the Secretary and Treasurer, of the Phoenix Fire Company for many years. This was his greatest passion.
Stub loved his cat “Company” and smoking his pipe peacefully while in his office.
Surviving are cousins Casey Rowley of Londonderry and Jean Roberts of Wells, various nieces and nephews and his longtime friend, Doris Merrow. He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Johnson) Rowley, on February 6, 2002, whom he married
on December 27, 1953.

Clifford R. Rogers
MARGATE, Fla. — Former Randolph-Bethel resident, Clifford R. Rogers, 78, of Margate, Florida, died at his home, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, April 9, 2002.
He was born in Royalton, Vermont, July 4, 1923, the son of Robert and Bessie (Smith) Rogers. He was a 1942 graduate of Randolph High School. On June 12, 1946, he married
Freda Guyette in Randolph. During World War II, he proudly served three years in the Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Clifford resided in Randolph until 1964 when he moved to Brattleboro, Vermont. In 1973 he moved to Florida. He was a self-employed logger from 1946-1957. From 1957-1968 he was co-owner of Rogers Brothers Construction. From 1968-1973 he was owner of Rogers Construction and owner/operator of the Brattleboro Bowl. From 1973-2000 he was employed by John F. Rogers Corp. in Florida.
He was a charter member and past president of the Randolph Riding Club. He enjoyed spending time with family, bowling, hunting, fishing, horseback riding and traveling.
He leaves his wife, Freda of 55 years of Margate, Florida; four sons, Jim Rogers of Brookline, Vt., John Rogers of Coral Springs, Fla., Peter Rogers of Delray Beach, Fla., and Tim Rogers of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Janet DuCharme of New Salem, Mass., and Susan Bright of Coconut Creek, Fla.; three brothers, William Rogers of Londonderry, Vt., Donald Rogers of Randolph, Vt., and Duane Rogers of Randolph Center, Vt.; three sisters, Rita Avery of Brattleboro, Vt., Rose Willey of West Rutland, Vt., and Lucille Howard of Ravena, Ohio; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.
He was predeceased by six brothers, Harold Rogers, Robert Rogers, Woodrow Rogers, Richmond Rogers, Lawrence Rogers and Chester Rogers; three sisters, Gladys Cushman, Nina Desilets and Loretta Bradley.
Services will be held at a later date in Randolph, Vt., at the Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery in Randolph Center, Vt. Contributions in his memory may be made to VITAS Hospice Charitable Fund, 5420 N.W. 33rd Avenue, Suite 100, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., 33309 or to the American Cancer Society.

Agnes L. Merrow
SOUTH LONDONDERRY — Agnes Lucille Merrow, 77, died April 5, 2002, at Springfield Convalescent Center.
She was born July 16, 1924, in Grafton, Mass., the daughter of George and Helen (Rich) Williams.
She married
Donald Merrow on June 14, 1947, in Manchester.
She enjoyed vacationing in Maine and on Cape Cod.
Survivors include her husband and son Donald Merrow Jr. of South Londonderry; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no service or calling hours. Cremation will take place at Eternal Flame Cremation in Brattleboro. Committal of ashes will be private.
Ralph C. Nesbitt Sr. Rites
ARLINGTON — The memorial service for Ralph Charles Nesbitt Sr., 76, who died April 6, 2002, was held Wednesday at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Joan N. O’Gorman, pastor of the East Arlington Federated Church, officiating. A private burial will take place in Evergreen cemetery in Arlington.

Arthur N. Poulin Jr. Rites
ARLINGTON — The prayer service for Arthur N. Poulin Jr., 84, who died April 6, 2002, was held Wednesday at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Arlington followed by the funeral Mass at St. Margaret’s Mary Church with the Rev. George Dupuis as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Columban’s cemetery in Arlington.
Organist was Louise Gauthier and soloist was Phillip Elwell.
The flag was presented to the family following the committal prayers. Paul Cross offered a fiddle tribute.
Bearers were Harry Hayden, Jim Hayden, Alden Grout, Pedar Kristianson, Ken Smith and Martin Clark.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

BENNINGTON — The funeral service for Barbara Ann LaFlamme, who died April 7, 2002, was held Wednesday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. George D. Eberly, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Park Lawn cemetery.
Bearers were Karl Harrington, Paul Harrington, Gary LaFlamme and Robert Morgan.
