George W. Smith Rites
CORINTH — The funeral service for George Wayne Smith, 31, who died April 1, 2002, was held Thursday at the Hale Funeral Home in Bradford with the Rev. Ron Rilling officiating. Burial followed in Waits River cemetery.
Bearers were Joseph Smith, Tim Ward, Harold Osmer Jr., Frank Smith Jr., Scott Flesch and Matt Galluzo.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Hale Funeral Home in Bradford.
Raymond F. Spoon
Raymond Francis “Babe” Spoon, 76, of Chamblee, Ga., formerly of Rutland, died unexpectedly April 14, 2002, at his home in Georgia.
He was born Nov. 29, 1925, in Cambridge, N.Y., the son of Charles M. and Alice (Carney) Spoon.
Mr. Spoon attended Christ the King School, and was a 1944 graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy. He was a 1949 graduate of Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind.
He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II.
Mr. Spoon worked as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, retiring in 1980.
He loved sports, playing varsity sports at MSJ in basketball, baseball and football. He enjoyed his tryout with the New York Giants.
Surviving are a son, Raymond C. Spoon of Shreveport, La.; three daughters, Susan Schmuddle of Marietta, Ga., Cheryll Chambers of Cincinnati and Karyn Hodgson of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a brother, Charles E. Spoon of Rutland; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ann (Pekari) Spoon, who died in 1978, and by his second wife, Patricia (Boteler) Spoon, who died in 1999.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Catholic Church in Atlanta. Burial will follow in Nancy Hart Memorial Park cemetery in Hartwell, Ga.
The R.T. Patterson Funeral Home in Norcross, Ga., is in charge of arrangements.
William J. Hogenkamp
William J. Hogenkamp, 72, of Rutland and Waterville, N.Y., died April 14, 2002, at his home in Rutland.
He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on July 5, 1929, the son of Jerome and Lenore Hogenkamp.
He graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in Utica, N.Y., in 1946 and from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., in 1950.
He married
Joan Karl on Oct. 24, 1953, at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Utica.
He retired from General Electric in 1989, with 39 years of service.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mary Specht of Waterville; three sons, Eric Hogenkamp of West Chester, Pa., William Hogenkamp Jr. of Lakewood, Colo., and Peter Hogenkamp of Rutland; a brother, Thomas Hogenkamp of Williamsville, N.Y.; and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Church in Waterville. Burial will be in St. Bernard’s cemetery.
Friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on April 27 at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Church in Rutland.

John T. Kelly
GRANVILLE, N.Y. — John T. Kelly, 61, died April 15, 2002, at Albany Medical Center.
He was born July 5, 1940, in Granville, the son of Anna (Gilbert) Kelly and John T. Kelly Sr.
Survivors include two nieces, Julie McCollum of Connecticut and Deborah McCollum of Granville.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Old Stump Church in North Cambridge, with the Rev. John Patrick officiating. Burial will be at Our Lady of Mount Carmel cemetery in Granville.
There are no calling hours.
The Robert M. King Funeral home in Granville is in charge of arrangements.
Myron B. Matteson
GLENS FALLS, N.Y. — Myron Burton Matteson, 86, died April 13, 2002, at Glens Falls Hospital.
He was born Aug. 20, 1915, in Rupert, Vt., the son of Willis and Jessie (Kelly) Matteson.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the European and Pacific theaters and attaining the rank of warrant officer senior grade.
He retired in 1977 from the Hercules Powder Co. after 32 years of service.
He was a member of the Glens Falls American Legion and a life member and founding officer of the Queensbury Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6196.
He was also a member of Christ Church United Methodist.
He enjoyed carpentry and gardening.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Viola (Lee) Matteson; two daughters, Vicki Matteson of Rutland, Vt., and Laura Doda of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a son, Glenn Matteson of Glens Falls; and two brothers, Hugh Matteson of South Granville and Raymond Matteson of Salem.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Emma and Dorothy; three brothers, Dexter Kelley, Edward and Peter; and a son, Kevin.
A memorial service will be held today at Sullivan, Minahan and Potter at 407 Bay Road, Queensbury, with the Rev. Henry Frueh of Christ Church United Methodist officiating. Burial will be at Pine View cemetery in Queensbury.
Friends may call one hour before the memorial service.

Burnadette S. Yager Rites
The funeral service for Burnadette Signor Yager, who died April 11, 2002, was held Monday at Christ the King Church with the Rev. Reid C. Mayo, pastor, officiating.
Burial followed in the Evergreen cemetery, with the Rev. Mayo officiating.
Organist was Sister Pauline Gratton.
Vocalist was a granddaughter, Joanna Yager Abbott.
Readers were granddaughters, Linda Lee Stallone and Dr. Mary-Alice Abbott.
Guitarist and soloist was a grandson, William Scheideman.
Words of remembrance were offered by Dr. Abbott.
Bearers were sons-in-law Hilton Abbott and Jack Scheideman and grandchildren William Scheideman and Kevin Stallone.
Prayer services were held Sunday at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland by the Rev. Mayo.
Peter S. Aborn Rites
WELLS — The funeral service for Peter S. Aborn, who died April 10, 2002, was held Thursday at the Tossing Funeral Home with Rabbi Solomon Goldberg, officiating.
A memorial service was held Friday in the Riley Center at Burr and Burton Academy. Assistant Headmaster Steven Houghton led the service, with friends, colleagues, and students offering remembrances and reflections.
Pianist was Judy Rudiakov.
The French horn was played by Sheryl Hadeka.
Ushers were Kerri MacLaury, Laura Parker-Noyes, Maisie Wright and Josephine Berger.
Burial was in the Cedar Park cemetery in Westwood, N.J., on April 14 with Mr. Aborn’s sister, Jennifer Hart, leading the committal prayers.
The Tossing Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mary E. Kantorski
The graveside service for Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Kantorski, 70, of Rutland, who died Feb. 7, 2002, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph cemetery. The Rev. Thomas Mattison will officiate.

Elsie P. Hawthorne
A memorial service for Elsie Pulling Hawthorne, 73, of Rutland, who died Feb. 2, 2002, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Marceau will officiate.

Harold P. Berger
BRATTLEBORO — Harold P. Berger, 54, died April 13, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Rutland on Nov. 20, 1947, the son of Marvin and Catherine Jean (Condon) Berger.
He was a 1965 graduate of Rutland High School. He attended Castleton State College and received his law degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
He was an attorney for the law firm Ryan, Smith & Carbine Ltd. in Rutland for 23 years before moving to Brattleboro in 2001.
He was an MG sports car enthusiast.
Surviving are his wife, Mary White of Brattleboro; a son, Ian Berger of Athens, Ohio; three brothers, Peter Berger of Barre, Ritchie Berger of Shelburne and Kerry Berger of Cambridge; a sister, Linda Berger of Montpelier; two stepchildren, Kieran Moriarty and Connor Moriarty, both of Brattleboro; two nieces; and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Mary A. Dearth
NORTH BENNINGTON — Mary Ann Dearth, 80, of North Bennington, formerly of Milford, Conn., died April 13, 2002, at Centers for Living and Rehabilitation following a long illness.
She was born in West York, Pa., on March 18, 1922, the daughter of Walter and Ruth Rosalind (Pironi) Hinkhouse.
She was a graduate of Gradwohl Institute/Washington University in St. Louis.
During the 1940s she was employed as a laboratory technician in major hospitals throughout Texas and California.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Milford for more than 40 years.
Her hobbies and interests included golf, tennis, swimming, fishing, dancing and playing the piano.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Conwell P. Dearth of North Bennington; three sons, Stephen Dearth of Hamburg, N.Y., Mark Dearth of Gilbert, Ariz., and William Dearth of Marlboro; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her stepmother, Thelma Hinkhouse of Granby, Quebec, Canada.
Private memorial services will be held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
