John E. Adams
ESSEX JUNCTION — John E. Adams, a longstanding and well-known merchant on Church Street in Burlington, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2002, with his wife and brother, Robert, at his side.
He was born in Rochester, N.H., on Nov. 16, 1924, the son of John E. Adams Sr. and Regina (LaRochelle) Adams. He graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in Rutland and the Rutland School of Business. He also attended two years at St. Michael’s College.
John was a proud veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from February 1943, to March 1946. He was a forward observer in Battery C, 332nd Field Artillery Battalion, 86th Infantry Division, “BLACKHAWKS.” His tour of service took place in the European and Pacific theaters, being discharged with the rank of Technician 5th Grade. He was a Life Member of the Essex Junction VFW Post 6689. John spoke frequently of the men he served with and the eternal bond they shared. John also served as a Major in the Vermont Wing, Civil Air Patrol during the early 1950s.
Prior to and after the war, John worked in the family business in Rutland, including a restaurant (Mac’s Diner) and the “Adams Variety Store” on South Main Street, which he eventually owned. Prior to relocating to Burlington, he worked for Racine Tower Construction Corp., erecting and maintaining radio and television towers all over the United States and Canada. A fall from one of these towers convinced him to get his feet grounded. He was convinced that there was no better way than to start selling shoes.
He was most well known for his time on Church Street in Burlington, where he began working in the shoe department at Abernathy’s Department Store in 1960. After the close of Abernathy’s, John purchased the shoe business, renamed Adams Boots & Shoes, which he owned and operated until December 2000. Even with the sale of the store, John refused to retire and continued to work at the store until the day he died. He was recognized by the Church Street Market Place Association and the City of Burlington in 1998, as one of the longest surviving merchants on Church Street. The family wishes to thank all of John’s friends on Church Street, his customers, and those who worked for and with him for their many years of support and friendship.
John’s greatest joy was the family cookouts, and gatherings at Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and whenever there was work to be done around the house. He took great pride in his garden and the landscaping around his backyard. He always gave of himself for the care of his family and friends and in spite of numerous and significant aches and pains, he never complained and was never stopped from accomplishing anything he had his stubborn mind set to.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline V. (Shaw) Adams; his brothers, Monsignor Raymond Adams of Essex Junction, Robert Adams of Williston, and Donald Adams and his wife, Jean, of Rutland; his sister-in-law, Virginia Adams of Rutland; his children, John E. Adams of Bruno, Canada, David and Gene Adams of Jericho, Patricia and her husband, Robert McGarry, of Manchester, N.H., and Robert H. Adams of Hartford, Conn.; and his grandchildren, John, Barrett & Kim, Laura, Matthew, Jackie, Brian, Steven and Sharlene; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Susan (Illick) Adams of St. Bruno, Canada; his brother, Francis Adams of Rutland; and his sister, RoseMary Hebert of Rochester, N.H.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. at St. Lawrence Church on West Street in Essex Junction. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2002, at Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant St., Essex Junction.
