Nettie E. Knight
NORTH SPRINGFIELD — Nettie E. Knight, 93, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at the Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born March 27, 1908, in Windham, the daughter of Henry and Sadie (Carleton) Rhoades. She attended schools in Windham.
She lived in North Springfield for most of her life.
For many years she was the manager of the North Springfield Community Market. She also did housekeeping for many area families.
Her hobbies included crocheting, playing cards and board games.
Survivors include a son, Mark H. Knight Sr. of Perkinsville, seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, William M. Knight; a son, William E. Knight; four brothers, Clifford, Randall, Leslie and Guy Rhoades; and a sister, Mabel Allen.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Thomas W. Hiltsley, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Grove cemetery in North Springfield.
Friends may call at the Davis Chapel on Tuesday afternoon one hour prior to the service.

John B. Antoniewich Rites
SPRINGFIELD — A memorial service for John B. Antoniewich, 89, who died March 15, 2002, was held Saturday in the Davis Memorial Chapel.
His son, John “Jay” Antoniewich, officiated.
A private burial will take place at the convenience of the family at Lake Sunapee, N.H.
John R. Reynolds Rites
SPRINGFIELD — A funeral Mass for John R. Reynolds, 65, who died March 19, 2002, at Mount Ascutney Health Care Center in Windsor, was celebrated Saturday in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield. The Rev. Joseph Romano, pastor, officiated, assisted by Deacon David Bouley of Rhode Island. Burial followed in St. Mary’s cemetery.
Soloist was Joyce Hamilton. Organist was Rafal Nowak.
Bearers were Ernest “Puggy” Lamphere, Douglas Johnson, Mark Fountain, Bruce Davie, Stephen Davie and Doug Davie.
The Davis Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Carrie P. Spaulding
LUDLOW — Carrie Page Spaulding, 75, died March 23, 2002, at Springfield Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Ludlow, the daughter of Thomas and May (Briscoe) Page. She graduated from Black River Academy in 1945 and later attended Middlebury College.
She was employed at the Montgomery Ward catalogue store in Ludlow for many years and later worked at the nursery at Round Top Ski Area. For 13 years, she served as the manger of the General Store at the Calvin Coolidge Birthplace in Plymouth.
She served as the past unit president of the American Legion Auxiliary of the Ballard Hobart Post 36, was a former member of the Ludlow Women’s Club and the Tyson Ladies Aide Society, and served as a volunteer at the Tyson Library for many years.
She was a past noble grand, past secretary and first vice grand of the Mizpah Rebekah Lodge 29. Mrs. Spaulding also belonged to Keystone Chapter 5, Order of the Eastern Star, in Ludlow and was a past delegate of the State Assembly. She was a longtime member and served as past secretary of the O.O. Howard Women’s Relief Corp 11.
Survivors include two sons, Scott Spaulding of Worcester, Mass., and Barry Spaulding of Rutland; a grandson; a niece; and several nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard E. Spaulding, in 1997; a brother, Thomas Kneeland; and a sister, Dorothy Toney.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Davis Memorial Chapel, 99 Summer St. in Springfield. The Rev. Jane Buswell of Tyson will officiate. Burial will be held later in Pleasant View cemetery in Ludlow.
Friends may call at the Davis Memorial Chapel on Wednesday one hour prior to the service.
Anna M. Grant
BETHEL — Anna May Grant, 97, of Bethel died March 23, 2002, at Genesis Elder Care in Lebanon, N.H.
She was born March 14, 1905, in Randolph, the daughter of George and Emma (Pitkins) Brown. A lifetime Bethel area resident, she attended Gaysville and Bethel schools.
She married
Robert Ross and Howard Grant, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed reading and sewing.
She is survived by a son, James R. Grant of Bethel; a daughter, Catherine Frost of Windsor; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert; and three sisters, Daisy Edmunds, Jennie Russell and Minnie Colburn.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date at the Bethel Gilead cemetery.
There are no calling hours.

Edgar J. Lauzon
BENNINGTON — Edgar J. Lauzon, 91, died March 22, 2002, at the home of his daughter, Jacqueline Duguay, in Williamstown, Mass.
He was born in Bennington Feb. 26, 1911, the son of Edmond and Cordelia (Ratelle) Lauzon. He received his education in Bennington.
He married
Victoria A. LaFreniere in Greylock, Mass., on Oct. 12, 1940. Mrs. Lauzon died Nov. 18, 1991.
In earlier years, Mr. Lauzon worked as a house painter for his father and later at the Holden Leonard Mill. He later was employed at the Warren Wire Co. in Pownal for 20 years until his retirement in 1973.
For the past 10 years, he has been an active volunteer at the Harvest Soup Kitchen in Bennington. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, reading and cribbage.
Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline Duguay of Williamstown, Mass., and Sally Gaspardi of Bennington; two sons, Eugene Lauzon of Bennington and Peter Lauzon of Winnsboro, Texas; a sister, Helen Sohl of Bennington; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Florence Call, and by two brothers, Armond and Gilbert Lauzon.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington with Pastor Bob Lebert of Harvest Christian Ministries officiating. Burial will take place in Oak Hill cemetery in Pownal at a later date.
There will be no calling hours.

Katherine Mason Rites
ARLINGTON — The funeral service for Katherine Mason, 79, who died March 18, 2002, was held Saturday at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with the Rev. George Dupuis, pastor of St. Margaret Mary’s Church, officiating. Burial took place in the Ira Allen cemetery in Sunderland.
Bearers were Shawn Towsley, David Towsley, Larry Doucette, Dana Hart, Charles Harris and Doug Grover.
Stephanie H. Frizzell
BRATTLEBORO — Stephanie H. (Juscen) Frizzell, 89, died March 22, 2002, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. She had been a resident of Thompson House for the past 15 months.
She was born in Thompsonville, Conn., on Jan. 11, 1913, the daughter of Frank J. and Kathryn A. (Pyrbzycien) Juscen. She moved with her family to Brattleboro in 1918.
She lived in Brattleboro for the rest of her life, except for a brief period in Hinsdale, N.H., where her family had a small farm and she attended early elementary school. She later attended Brattleboro schools.
She married
Paul Frizzell on July 9, 1938, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Brattleboro.
She worked for Berkshire Fine Spinning at the Fort Dummer mill, in the food service programs at the Oak Grove School, Brattleboro Middle School and Brattleboro Union High School, and for a time was manager of the lunch program at BUHS and Oak Grove.
Survivors include two sons, Stuart F. Frizzell of Bedford, N.H., and Thomas P. Frizzell of Brattleboro; two daughters, Inder K. (Pauline) Khalsa and Martha J. Doyle of Brattleboro; two sisters, Minnie Tatro of West Hartford, Conn., and Catherine Waters of Hinsdale, N.H.; nine grandchildren; a great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph Juscen, Stanley Juscen, and Benjamin Juscen; three sisters, Anna Rabideau, Sally Faridoni and Helen Juscen; and two siblings who died in early childhood.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Walnut Street. Burial will follow in Meetinghouse Hill cemetery.
Family members may call today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Atamaniuk Funeral Home, 40 Terrace St., Brattleboro.

Janet B. Lawrence
DALLAS — Janet Beal Lawrence, 83, died on March 21, 2002, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.
She was born on Sept. 14, 1918, in New York City, the daughter of Henry and Alice Beal. She grew up in Springfield, Vt. When she was a teenager, her family to Chicago, where she attended the Girls’ Latin School of Chicago.
Upon graduation she pursued further studies in music in New York City.
In 1938 she married
John Lawrence in Windsor, Vt.
In later years, she pursued a brief nursing career.
She enjoyed tennis, bridge, reading, the arts and preserving family history.
She was predeceased by her husband and by a sister, Joan Kaula.
Survivors include a sister Dorothy Christelow of Hanover, N.H.; four daughters, Carol Matzke of Mercer Island, Wash., Gale Lawrence of Huntington, Vt., Johanne Lawrence LaGrange of New York, N.Y., and Ann Lawrence Wessel of Dallas; a son, John Lawrence of Weatherford; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service Thursday at 3 p.m. at Sparkman/Hillcrest Northwest Highway Chapel in Dallas, with the Rev. Barbara Marcum officiating.

Winifred I. Curtis
Winifred Isabelle Curtis, 71, of Rutland died March 27, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
She was born July 12, 1930, in Noyan, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Andrew and Cassie (Campbell) Hislop.
She married
Earl Curtis on Dec. 6, 1950, in Swanton and moved to Rutland in 1952.
Mrs. Curtis had been employed doing home sewing and home childcare and by Foley’s Laundry prior to her retirement.
She enjoyed home decorating, painting, wallpapering and cooking.
Survivors include her husband of Rutland; two daughters, Dorothy Santoro of Rutland and Chief Master Sgt. Earlene Palmer, stationed at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan; four sisters, Joyce Smith of Noyan, Shirley Reynolds of Clarenceville, Quebec, Maxine Gingera of Montreal and Linda Fairhurst of Prince Edward Island, Canada; three brothers, Clifton Hislop of Fairfax, Douglas Hislop of Freeville, N.Y., and Gerald Hislop of Venise, Quebec; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in Canada.

Henry James
PORTLAND, Maine — Henry James, 85, formerly of Northfield Green, died Thursday, March 27, 2002, at Falmouth By the Sea.
Mr. James was born in Cheraw, South Carolina, a son of Ernest and Alice Squire James. He attended South Carolina schools.
Mr. James served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a chef and restaurant owner, having worked in hotels in Boston. Mr. James and his wife owned restaurants in Rutland, Vermont. He loved to cook Italian dishes and speaking the Italian language.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mabel (Henderson) James of Falmouth; two sons, H. Arnold James and his wife, Martha R. of Falmouth; Jeffrey S. James of Montpelier, Vermont; three grandchildren, Zachary, Alexandra, and Colby James.
Visiting hours will be held Saturday 2 to 4 p.m. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. There will be no funeral service.
