Dalton Camp, 81, noted Canadian columnist, Tory
The Associated Press
FREDERICTON, New Brun-swick — Dalton Camp, who stepped out of the Tory backrooms of the Diefenbaker era and went on to become an influential political commentator, died Monday at age 81.
Jackie Webster, a friend of the family, said Camp died in hospital of complications arising from a serious stroke he suffered last month.
Friends and family had been encouraged by Camp’s battle with the ravages of the stroke. He had been recovering at his home near Fredericton and was hoping to resume work on his memoirs.
“He was doing so well. This took everyone by surprise,” she said.
In his heyday, Camp was king of the backroom boys; a man who was both loved and hated by Tories, but who was widely admired for his fierce devotion to his friends and to his beliefs.
“We have lost a man with a tremendous interest in, and a tremendous knowledge of, the political scene of this country,” said Fredericton Mayor Les Hull, a friend of Camp’s.
Tributes to Camp included a salute from Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson. Camp was an officer of the Order of Canada.
“He was an elegant and witty writer, giving us books and columns that were models of balance, judgment and irony. We will miss him, and we will miss his voice.”
Federal Conservative Leader Joe Clark said he will miss Camp immensely.
“He brought a sense of perspective and humor and fun to public life,” he said in Ottawa. “He changed profoundly the history of my party at a very difficult time in the early ‘60s.”
As a political strategist, he slew John Diefenbaker and created Robert Stanfield.
Survivors include a daughter, Connie Camp, an editor at the Rutland (Vt.) Herald.
