Harry S. Baldwin Jr.
WHITE CREEK, N.Y. — Harry S. Baldwin Jr., 73, died Feb. 9, 2002, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 20, 1928, in Bennington, Vt., the son of Harry and Elizabeth (Gilbar) Baldwin Sr.
He received his education in White Creek and Hoosick Falls, and attended trade schools for plumbing, heating and cooling.
He married
Marilyn Wayman on Feb. 13, 1954, in North Bennington, Vt.
Mr. Baldwin was employed at Stanley Tool Co. in Shaftsbury, Vt., and Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge as a boiler supervisor until the time of his retirement.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War with the 7th Infantry Division.
He was a former member of the White Creek Fire Department and a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts in White Creek.
Mr. Baldwin enjoyed camping.
Survivors include his wife of White Creek; four daughters, Christine Whitford of Arglye, Mary Krawczyk of Bennington, Vt., Joan Whitford of Georgetown, Tenn., and Jane Bernardone of Cleveland, Ohio; a son, Peter Baldwin of White Creek; a sister, Virginia Baldwin of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a grandson.
The funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Brown officiating. Burial will take place in St. John’s cemetery in North Bennington, Vt.
Friends may call today from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles N. Shortt
EAST HOOSICK, N.Y. — Charles Nelson “Bud” Shortt, 54, died Feb. 10, 2002, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vt.
He was born Jan. 20, 1948, the son of Clark and Lillian (Shortt) Rice.
He worked as a roofing contractor who was especially skilled in slate work.
Mr. Shortt was a stock car and go-cart racing enthusiast. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy Shortt of East Hoosick; five sons, Eric Shortt of Hoosick Falls, Paul Shortt of Manchester, Todd of Bennington, Jake Gardner and Trevor Gardner of Hoosick Falls; a daughter, Lisa Rampola of Wallingford, Vt.; a brother, Duane Shortt of Sequin, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.
A service of remembrance will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bennington with the Rev. Arthur Kingdon, rector, officiating. Following the service friends are invited to Mr. Shortt’s home on Johnson Hill Road in East Hoosick for a time of fellowship, remembering and refreshment.

Norma F. Taylor
BENNINGTON — Norma F. Taylor, 63, died Feb. 11, 2002, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Stanley J. Elwell
BENNINGTON — Stanley J. Elwell, 60, died Feb. 10, 2002, at Bennington Health & Rehabilitation.
He was born on June 22, 1941, in Bennington, the son of Trenor Elwell and Lucy Quinby Elwell Boutin.
He was employed at Ames Department Store as a district manager at the time of his illness. He had also been employed by M.H. Fishman Co. for many years.
He enjoyed fishing and skiing.
Survivors include three children, Sherry Elwell, Timothy Elwell and Jeniffer Galipeau, all of Bennington; his mother of Bennington; five sisters, Barbara Cota of Pownal, Emily Grover and Patricia Elwell, both of Shaftsbury, Ty Elwell of Madison, Conn., and Margaret Brundige of Bennington; three brothers, Jack Elwell of Bennington, Trenor Elwell Jr. of Spokane, Wash., and Gordon Elwell of Utica, N.Y.; his former wife, Patricia Celley of Bennington; four grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father; his stepfather, Rene Boutin; and two brothers, Rene Boutin Jr. and Ricky Elwell.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Norma Drosky, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Park Lawn cemetery.
Following the committal service friends are invited to Colgate Hall at the First Baptist Church in Bennington for a time of sharing and refreshment.
There will be no calling hours.

Paul C. Atkins
BELLOWS FALLS — Paul C. Atkins, 81, died Feb. 11, 2002, at the McGirr Nursing Home in Bellows Falls.
He was born March 11, 1920, in Shelburne Falls, Mass., the son of Paul and Alice Atkins.
The family later moved to Vermont.
He received his schooling in Windham County.
He married
Helen Narkiewicz on Nov. 6, 1943.
Mr. Atkins worked for Moore and Thompson’s, Fellows Gear Shaper and the Book Press, retiring in 1978 due to a disability.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a former member of the Elks. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Bellows Falls.
He enjoyed yard sales, collecting various items and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, William Atkins and Edward Atkins, both of Charlestown, N.H.; three grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Edmond, who died in infancy.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Bellows Falls. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart cemetery.

Mary Markowski
Mary “Mamie” Markowski, 63, of Rutland died Feb. 13, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
She was born June 29, 1938, in Rutland, the daughter of Nicholas and Frances (Pitaniello) LaVecchia.
She was a caregiver for numerous families and children for many years.
Mrs. Markowski was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and Foster Parent Association.
Survivors include her father of Rutland; her husband, John Markowski of Rutland; four daughters, Tafi Baker and Faith Bernal, both of Rutland, Lynn Hayes of Brandon and Karen Sabatini of Hudson Falls, N.Y.; three sons, John Markowski Jr. of Brandon, Nicholas Markowski and Kevin Markowski, both of Rutland; a brother, Nicholas LaVecchia Jr. of Rutland; four sisters, Connie Colbert of Boylston, Mass., Theresa Cronin of Melbourne, Fla., Benita Seeley of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Karen Selzer of Mercer Island, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; an extended son who lived with her, Ralph Moon; and caregiver, Carol Burney.
She was predeceased by her mother in 2001 and a son, Gregory Markowski in 1985.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. A private burial will follow in Calvary cemetery.

Walter H. Pierre
MOUNT HOLLY — Walter H. Pierre, 86, a former resident of Staten Island, N.Y., and Bridgeport, Conn., died Feb. 13, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 4, 1916, on Staten Island, the son of Walter and Jennie (Brady) Pierre.
He was educated in Staten Island schools and graduated from Wagner College on Staten Island.
Mr. Pierre was employed at Carpenter Technologies in Bridgeport for many years, and later owned and operated Pierre’s Variety Store in Ludlow from which he retired.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, earning the rank of captain.
Survivors include five daughters, Margaret Donnelly of Pittsfield, Mass., Mary Jane Donnelly and Susan Donnelly, both of Middlefield, Mass., Regina Skurja of Wallingford, Conn., and Alice Norton of Middletown, Ohio; a son, Walter Pierre of Flower Mound, Texas; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Alice (Turner) Pierre in 1983.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Rutland with the Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor, officiating. The graveside committal and burial service will take place Monday at 1 p.m. with military honors in Calverton National cemetery in Calverton, N.Y.

Irene C. Knauer
DANBY — Irene Cordelia Knauer, 88, died Feb. 13, 2002, at Mountain View Center Genesis ElderCare in Rutland.
She was born Dec. 9, 1913, in Danby, the daughter of Francis and Elizabeth (Cooney) Raiche.
She graduated from Bennington High School and continued her education at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, N.Y., where she trained as a registered nurse.
She married
Joseph J. Knauer on Oct. 18, 1937, in East Dorset.
Mrs. Knauer was employed as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy for several years and at a hospital in California for three years.
She was a communicant of St. Jerome’s Church for many years.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Pastor of Coronado, Calif.; a sister, Mildred Powers of Danby; seven granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Jerome’s Church in East Dorset with the Rev. Julian LaFlamme, pastor, as celebrant. The graveside service will follow in St. Jerome’s cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester.
