Elaice C. French
EAST THETFORD — Elaice Cook French, 72, died Feb. 4, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
She was born Dec. 9, 1929, in Union Village, the daughter of Herbert and Vaun (Pierce) Cook.
She graduated from Thetford Academy in 1948.
She was married to Donald Packard of Marshfield for 17 years, and later married George French on July 1, 1975, in East Hampton, Conn. Mr. French died in 1979.
Mrs. French had worked in the White River Junction telephone office as an operator, for Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn., for several years and most recently for Wing’s Market in East Thetford. She also worked as an Avon lady in the Thetford area.
She was a member of the Union Village United Methodist Church and University Grange in Norwich, and a volunteer at the Bugbee Center.
Survivors include four brothers, Joe Cook of Union Village, Bing Cook of Norwich, Arvard Cook of East Hampton, Conn., and Otis Cook of Manchester, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Clifford Cook.
The memorial service will be held Saturday at the Union Village United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Blaine officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Union Village Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.

Daniel S. Clay
BAYVILLE, N.J. — Daniel S. Clay, 74, died Feb. 1, 2002, at Community Medical Center in Toms River.
He was born in Philadelphia, and lived in Swarthmore, Pa., for a time before moving to Toms River and later Bayville.
He was a news reporter for the Asbury Park Press at the Toms River bureau for 18 years, retiring in 1989. He had also worked at the New Jersey Courier for a short time, the Times Beacon Newspaper in Tuckerton, Lakewood Daily Times and the weekly New Jersey Courier, where he eventually became editor.
Mr. Clay and his wife enjoyed buying and selling antiques and collectibles, and after his retirement, they participated in antique shows. He also operated an antique business and was a substitute teacher at Central High School in Bayville.
He was a member of the Berkeley Township Board of Education and served with the Central Regional Board of Education.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Elaine Moeller Clay; a son, Christopher of Chester, Vt.; a daughter, Lisa Clay of Ringwood; a niece; and three nephews.

Sandra M. Kane
BRATTLEBORO — Sandra Marie Kane, 57, died early Feb. 4, 2002, at her home.
She was born Sept. 19, 1944, in Brattleboro, the daughter of Joseph and Stella (Bedard) Bober.
She graduated from Brattleboro Union High School in 1963.
She married Robert Kane on Jan. 28, 1967, in Brattleboro. He died in 1973.
Mrs. Kane had been employed at Bridgeport Metals in Hinsdale, N.H., for five years, retiring in 1997 due to a medical disability. She had also worked as a cashier at Hinsdale Raceway for 16 years and at the former Famolare Shoe Co. in Brattleboro, and part time as a waitress at the former Colonial Restaurant in Brattleboro.
She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, Brattleboro Aerie 2445, and served as a trustee. She was also a member and served as treasurer for the Samuel Elliot Tenants Association, and had assisted with the bingo program for several years. She volunteered her services to help the elderly, taking them to the doctors and running errands for them.
Survivors include her parents of Brattleboro; two sons, Rikkie Kane of Swanton and Robert Kane Jr. of Brattleboro; a brother, Joseph Bober of Brattleboro; four grandchildren; an aunt; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The memorial service will be held at a later date.
There will be no calling hours.

Phyllis E. Powell
BRATTLEBORO — Phyllis E. Powell, 80, a resident of Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, N.H., died Feb. 4, 2002, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 28, 1921, in Swanton, the daughter of Charles and Ruby (Graham) Gould.
She was educated in St. Albans and graduated from Bellows Free Academy in 1939.
She married Francis Powell on July 11, 1942, in St. Albans. He died in 1987.
Mrs. Powell was employed as a secretary at Dunham Brothers Shoe Co. for several years, retiring in 1974. She had also worked as a secretary in the offices at Cifco in Brattleboro, and during World War II was employed at a law office in Washington, D.C.
She enjoyed bingo, yard sales, flea markets, estate auctions and traveling.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Powell of Hinsdale and James Powell of Brattleboro; two daughters, Sylvia Lyon of Brattleboro and Lee Ann Sherry of Westminster, Colo.; a sister, Claire Walker of Lovell, Maine; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Kenneth Gould, Robert Gould and Raymond Gould; and three sisters, Louise Allard, Marjorie Fairbanks and Sylvia Bigler.
The graveside committal service will be held at a later date in Morningside Cemetery.

Douglas S. Pike
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Douglas Stephen Pike, 50, formerly of Brattleboro, Vt., died Jan. 30, 2002.
He was born March 18, 1951, in Brattleboro, the son of Harry and Elfleda (Baker) Pike.
Survivors include his parents of Brattleboro; three sisters, Mary Rosania of Meriden, Susan Cleveland of Brattleboro and Carol Jarrett of Daytona, Fla.; two brothers, Kevin Pike of Hinsdale, N.H., and Brian Pike of Claremont, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held Friday at 5 p.m. at Trinity College Chapel in Hartford. The committal service will take place at a later date in Morningside Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.
Bertha Svrcek
BRISTOL — Bertha Svrcek, 92, died Feb. 4, 2002, at her home.
She was born Jan. 1, 1910, in New York City, the daughter of Stanley and Frances (Stodola) Krupka.
Survivors include her husband of 74 years, Samuel Svrcek of Bristol; a son, William Svrcek of Bristol; a daughter, Evelyn Rice of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol.
Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jennifer A. Hartwell
WHITEHALL, N.Y. — Jennifer Anne Hartwell, 47, died Feb. 4, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
She was born May 27, 1954, in Whitehall, the daughter of William and Regina (Gordon) Jones.
She enjoyed boating, playing pool and riding her Harley. She also worked in her craft store, Wood & Wicker.
Survivors include her husband, John Hartwell of Whitehall; two daughters, Jill Robarge Gilman of Templeton, Mass., and Jennie Morse of Balston Lake; seven grandchildren; three stepchildren; three brothers, William Jones of Whitehall, Larry Jones of Fair Haven, Vt., and Gene Jones of Castleton, Vt.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A prayer service will be held Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Jillson Funeral Home in Whitehall with the Rev. William A. Gorman, pastor of Our Lady of Hope Church, officiating.
Friends may call Thursday from 5 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
