Edna G. Buffum Rites
SUNDERLAND — The funeral service for Edna Grover Buffum, 88, who died Jan. 22, 2002, was held Saturday at the Federated Church in East Arlington with the Rev. Joan N. O’Gorman, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington.
Organist was Douglas Bischoff and soloist was Heather Look.
Pallbearers were Robert Littlefield, Fred Schmigel, David Felion, Randy Moore, Patrick Kennedy and Ray Alcombright.
Mrs. Buffum was predeceased by a brother, Barney Grover; and a sister, Ruth Grover.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Arlington.
Arnold J. Norton Sr. Rites
LUDLOW — The funeral service for Arnold Jay Norton Sr., who died Jan. 6, 2002, was held Sunday at St. James United Methodist Church in Proctorsville with the Rev. James Knapp, pastor, officiating. He was cremated at Eternal Flame Crematorium in Brattleboro.
Organist was Dolores Flack.
Scriptural reading, words of remembrance and tributes were offered by the Rev. James Knapp.
The American Legion of Ludlow, Proctorsville and Chester provided military honors.
Pallbearer was George Davis, a son-in-law.
Gladys S. Bishop
WEST RUTLAND —Gladys S. Bishop, 103, died Jan. 28, 2002, at Eden Park Nursing Home.
She was born Oct. 12, 1898, in Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, England, the daughter of William and Clara Savage.
Mrs. Bishop was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a charter member of West Rutland American Legion Post 87 Auxiliary.
Survivors include a son, Earle Bishop of Chittenden; a daughter, Anne Handley of West Rutland; 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband, Earle Bishop; two daughters, Joan McLeod and Barbara McCullough; and two sons, Robert Bishop and William Bishop.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Chapel with the Rev. Christopher A. Powell, rector, officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Rutland Area Visiting Nurses and Hospice, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, 05702-0787.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Tossing Funeral Home.
Nathan H. Smith
SHREWSBURY — Nathan Harold Smith, 48, died Jan. 28, 2002.
He was born Oct. 10, 1953, in Rutland, the son of Chandler and Joanne (Shangraw) Smith.
He graduated from Rutland High School in 1972 and an agricultural program at SUNY in Cobleskill, N.Y., in 1973. He also completed the programs for the Game of Logging, attended workshops in the LEAP Program and graduated from the Vermont Professional Loggers Program in 1999.
He married Bonnie Stanley on Dec. 23, 1978.
Mr. Smith worked with his parents on their Pine Valley Farm in Shrewsbury until he started his own logging and firewood business.
He was a member of the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Department, Mount Moriah Lodge 96, F&AM, in East Wallingford, Gamma Delta Iota fraternity and the Vermont Loggers Association. He served the town of Shrewsbury as constable for many years.
Mr. Smith was an avid hunter and logging safety advocate.
Survivors include his wife of Shrewsbury; two sons, Adam Smith of Benson and Joseph Stanley of Mount Holly; his mother of Shrewsbury; a sister, Julanne Sharrow of Shrewsbury; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father in 1984 and by a sister, Coreen Smith, in 1974.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at Shrewsbury Community Church with the Rev. Chris Heintz, pastor, officiating. The Mount Moriah Lodge 96, F&AM, will hold a fraternal service at that time.
There will be no calling hours.

Virginia M. Carvey
FAIR HAVEN — Mrs. Virginia Mary (Gray) Carvey, 82, died Monday, January 28, 2002, at the Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction, Vermont after a battle with cancer.
Mrs. Carvey was born on October 24, 1919, in Bristol, Connecticut, the daughter of the late Harry and Mary (McManamon) Gray. Virginia attended schools in Vermont and graduated from West Rutland High School.
She was employed as a cook for the greater portion of her working career. She started her career as a cook at Kehoe’s Diner in Castleton, Vt., and was later employed at the Four Aces Diner in West Lebanon, New Hampshire, for many years, retiring from there in 1982. Most recently she spent her time helping in the kitchen and baking at Carvey’s Family Restaurant here in Fair Haven.
Mrs. Carvey enjoyed doing crafts and making homemade items which she was very proud of and selling her items at various local craft fairs. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her twelve children, Mr. Edward T. Carvey Jr. and his wife Connie of Abilene, Texas, Patricia Tibbetts of Hartford, Vt., Mary Niles and her husband Don of Walkerton, Ind., Robert Carvey and his wife Sally of Rutland, Vt., Leo “Mickey” Carvey of Hydeville, Vt., Elizabeth Hauger of Thetford, Vt., Kathy Davis and her husband Ken of Rutland, Vt., Timothy Carvey and his wife Denise of Atwater, Calif., Rita Ross and her husband Tony Sr. of Poultney, Vt., Monica Williams and her husband Clarence of Glens Falls, N.Y., Bernard Carvey and his wife Johnna of Poultney, Vt., Sheila Hall and her husband Rick of Bomoseen, Vt.; her sister, Catherine Rowe of Rutland, Vt. She is also survived by her 36 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her six brothers, George, Fred, Daniel, Robert, Harry Jr. and John Gray; and her former husband, Mr. Edward T. Carvey Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fair Haven. The Rev. Gerry Flater, O.M.I., will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in St. Bridget’s Cemetery in West Rutland, Vt.
Following the service, the family will receive friends and relatives at the Carvey Family Restaurant.
Visiting hours will be on Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 North Main Street, Fair Haven.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Carvey may be given to Brookside Nursing Home Activity Fund, 1200 Christian Street, White River Junction, Vt., 05001, or to the American Cancer Society, New England Division Inc., 11 Loomis Street, Montpelier, Vt., 05602-3021.
Mary M. Palucci Rites
The funeral service for Mary M. (Belock) Palucci, 85, of Rutland, who died Jan. 26, 2002, was held Tuesday at St. Peter’s Church with the Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.
Organist was John Riddle and vocalist was Elise Cassarino.
Bearers were Anthony Belock, George Belock, Jerry Henrichon, Gary Belock, Robbie Henrichon and John Savery.
A prayer service was held Monday at the Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Houle.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
Carroll H. Lincoln Rites
CASTLETON — The funeral service for Carroll H. Lincoln, 87, who died Jan. 27, 2002, was held Tuesday at the Tossing Funeral Home with the Rev. Eric May, pastor of Ira Baptist Church, and the Rev. Bruce Bishop, pastor of First Baptist Church in Rutland, officiating. Internment was in Evergreen Cemetery in Pittsford, with burial to take place at a later date.
Organist was Ruth Meigs and soloist was the Rev. Bishop, with Joan Bishop accompanying.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Tossing Funeral Home.
Mildred P. Rathbun
WESTMINSTER — Mildred P. Rathbun, 98, died Jan. 28, 2002.
She was born Jan. 19, 1904, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of Harry and Florence (Miller) Sherman.
She married Frank Rathbun on Jan. 24, 1921, in East Greenwich, R.I. He died in 1965.
Mrs. Rathbun was a member of Westminster Congregational Church, the Home Den, Historical Society and the Mother’s Club, all in Westminster. She also belonged to the New Hampshire Society of Mayflower descendents, Bellows Falls Senior Center and Woman’s Club. She was a volunteer air raid warden during World War II.
Survivors include three daughters, Malissie Bowen of East Greenwich, R.I., Dorothy Schuman of Charlestown, N.H., and Frances Roy of Venice, Fla., and Rhode Island; six grandsons, two granddaughters, six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Edward Rathbun; four brothers, Walter, Earl, Warren and Harry Sherman; and four sisters, Lena Morris, Florence Bonner, Gladys Keenan and Hazel Martinelli.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Westminster Congregational Church in Westminster with the Rev. Pete Hults officiating. Burial will take place Friday at 11 a.m. in Rathbun Cemetery in Rhode Island.
Calling hours will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.

Mary G. Prescott
HANOVER, N.H. — Mary Gillett Prescott, 89, formerly of Woodstock, Vt., and New Canaan, Conn., died Jan. 27, 2002, at Kendal at Hanover in Hanover.
She was born on Oct. 13, 1912, in Westfield, Mass., the daughter of Edgar and Hazel (Cooley) Gillett.
She graduated from Westfield High School in Westfield, Mass., and the Boston School of Fine Arts in Boston, Mass.
She married Winthrop Prescott on Oct. 3, 1936, in Canton, Mass.
Mrs. Prescott was an accomplished horsewoman. She enjoyed skiing, golf and tennis.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Eger of McLean, Va., and Linda Prescott of Middlesex, Vt.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Priscilla Noyes of South Yarmouth, Mass., and Nancy Lewis of South Woodstock, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband; a son, Richard Prescott; a brother, Ralph Gillett; and a sister, Barbara Fish.
The memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Woodstock, with the Rev. Christina Brannock-Warner officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

W. Arthur Paterson
BARRE — W. Arthur “Art” Paterson, 80, of Park Street, died Saturday, January 26, 2002, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
Born on December 10, 1921, in Barre, he was the son of Robert and Ruth (Milne) Paterson. He attended Barre schools and graduated in 1939 from Spaulding High School, where he played on the varsity football, baseball and track and ski teams.
Following graduation, he attended the University of Vermont until 1942, when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army serving with the 100th Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations. He was honorably discharged as a 1st Lt. and was awarded the Purple Heart. He then resumed his studies at the university and was awarded a BS degree in agriculture in 1947. While at the university, he also joined the track and ski teams and was a member of the Delta Psi Fraternity.
He began his employment at the former Barre Electric Co. in 1947 and was store manager until leaving the business in 1976. Later that year, he joined the Heney Real Estate Co. in Montpelier, becoming a licensed realtor. He retired in 1987.
On June 21, 1947, he married Lucille Hooker in St. Johnsbury. Since their marriage, they had lived in Barre.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Joanie Rose and her husband Wendell of Barre Town, and a son, William S. Paterson and his wife Wendy of Castleton; four grandchildren, Kristyne and Juliet Rose and Robert and Kristin Peterson; a favorite sister-in-law, Doris Hooker of California, Md.; and nieces and nephews.
A brother, Robert Paterson and a sister, Doris “Ding” Peterson Fitts predeceased him.
His memberships included the Barre Lions Club, Central Vermont Realtors Association and the Woodbury Lake Association.
He especially enjoyed the company of his grandchildren and his cottage at Woodbury Lake, where he spent many hours.
A service of remembrance will be held Wednesday, January 30, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the Barre Congregational Church. Later, interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Jeannette B. Scamman
MIDDLEBURY — Jeannette Brown Scamman, 76, died Jan. 29, 2002, at Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.
She was born Oct. 22, 1925, in Ellsworth Falls, Maine, the daughter of Leon and Alta (Quinn) Brown.
She graduated from Ellsworth High School.
She married Richard Scamman on June 1, 1947.
Survivors include two sons, Bruce Scamman of Colchester and Mark Scamman of Brandon; two daughters, Karen Taylor of Salisbury and Rosamund Hotte of Vergennes; a brother, Lincoln Brown of Ellsworth, Maine; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband and by two brothers, William Brown and Dwight Brown Sr.
There will be no calling hours. A private interment will be at the convenience of the family in Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon.
