John A. Ekwall

BENNINGTON — John Algot Ekwall died Jan. 12, 2002.

He was born in 1926 in Pori, Finland.

He received an M.E. degree at Helsinki Technical University in 1949.

Mr. Ekwall came to the United States in 1950 and was employed at Hale Co. in Arlington as a pattern maker, time study engineer and superintendent. He later became vice president of manufacturing at Jamestown Lounge in Jamestown, N.Y., and then became general manager of Midwest Division of Good Tables, a division of Consolidated Foods Corp., in Illinois. He also joined the engineering faculty at North Carolina State University as a professor in their Furniture Manufacturing and Management Program. He was a consultant to the woodworking industries and furniture manufacturers. He wrote a monthly column for Furniture Design and Manufacturing magazine, and retired from North Carolina State University in 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth (Jean) Ekwall of Bennington; two sons, Bengt Ekwall of San Diego, Calif., and Mark Ekwall of Astoria, N.Y.; a daughter, Elizabeth Ekwall of Cambridge, Mass.; five grandchildren; and a sister, Maja Nordquist of Finland.

There will be no services.

Burial will be in the family grave in Pori, Finland.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.

Dean A. Hall

MESA, Ariz. — Dean A. Hall, 58, died Jan. 11, 2002, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born March 7, 1943, in Burlington, the son of Howard and Dorothy (Smith) Hall of Windsor, Vt.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Hall of Mesa; two sons, Steven Hall and Christopher Hall; a daughter, Angela Newman of South Carolina; two stepsons, Scott Demary and Steven Demary of Mesa; several grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Blaine of Cornish, N.H., and Bette Champney of Claremont, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Dean Jr., in 1985.

Services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Celia N. Davis

EAST BETHEL — Celia Nellie “Sid” Davis, 78, died Jan. 12, 2002, at her home.

She was born Oct. 14, 1923, in Bethel, the daughter of Frederick and Nellie (Davis) Cornell.

She attended schools in Bethel.

She married Kenneth Davis on Aug. 21, 1946, in Northfield. Mr. Davis died in 1987.

Mrs. Davis attended East Bethel Congregational Church and was a volunteer for the SHARE program.

She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening.

Survivors include two sons, Carroll Davis of Enid, Okla., and Dennis Davis of Bethel; a daughter, Bonita Cortese of Burlington; two sisters, Frieda Salls of Randolph Center and Arlene Benware of Mount Holly; a brother, Clifton Cornell of Randolph; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Cleveland, Elton and Stan Cornell.

The memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the East Bethel Congregational Church with the Rev. Millie Reynolds and the Rev. Ronald Rilling officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Cherry Hill Cemetery in Bethel.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, P.O. Box 485, Williston, 05495.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Frederick W. Richardson Rites

SPRINGFIELD — The memorial service for Frederick W. Richardson, 77, who died Jan. 7, 2002, was held Friday at the First Congregational Church in Springfield with the Rev. William Nelson officiating.

Music was provided by Candace Montesi.

The eulogy was given by Amanda Page, president of the Springfield Arts and Historical Society.

A reception followed in the church vestry.

Anna M. Lampman Rites

POWNAL — The funeral service for Anna Marie Lampman,70, who died Jan. 10, 2002, was held Monday at the Pownal Community Church with the Rev. Eugene Kemp officiating. Burial followed in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.

Organist was Joan Cannell and soloists were Bonnie Cutler and the Rev. Kemp.

Scriptural readings, remembrances and tributes were offered by the Rev. Isabelle King.

Pallbearers were David Thomas, Kenny George, Thomas Haskins, Billy Sweet, Nathan Martel and Mark Trombley.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.

John J. Potter

MIDDLEBURY — John J. Potter, 86, died Jan. 13, 2002, at his home.

He was born April 18, 1915, in Little Fall, N.J., the son of John and Johanna (Wigleven) Potter.

He was a furniture salesman for the Hufman-Koos Furniture Co. in New Jersey for more than 20 years.

Mr. Potter was a member of the East Middlebury United Methodist Church and the Russ Sholes Senior Center in Middlebury.

He was an avid reader.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara (Dinsmore) Potter of Middlebury; a son, Donald Potter of Long Island, N.Y.; a daughter, Bonnie Potter of Scotch Plains, N.J.; and two grandsons.

He was predeceased by a brother, William; and a sister, Wilma.

The memorial service in celebration of Mr. Potter’s life will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the East Middlebury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Neal, pastor, officiating. A reception will follow in the Sarah Partridge Community House in East Middlebury.

Memorial contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, 05753.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Service in Middlebury.

Robert R. Zimmerman

WEST RUTLAND — Robert Rose Zimmerman, 88, died Jan. 27, 2002, at his home.

He was born May 9, 1913, in Bradford, N.Y., the son of John and Mary (Rose) Zimmerman.

He graduated from Hobart College in 1935 with a bachelor’s degree and New York University with a master’s degree in 1941.

Mr. Zimmerman married Mary Coffin in 1939. She died in 1990.

He had been employed as an education advisor in the Civilian Conservation Corps in New York, taught history in the Rye Neck School District in Mamaroneck, N.Y., became headmaster for the Harrisburg Academy in Pennsylvania, and moved back to Mamaroneck and became principal of Port Chester High School. He then moved to West Rutland and became principal of West Rutland High School, where he retired.

Mr. Zimmerman was a World War II Army veteran, serving as a master sergeant assigned to General Eisenhower’s headquarters serving in Europe.

Survivors include two sons, George Zimmerman of West Rutland and John Zimmerman of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Catherine and Frances.

The memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at United Church of West Rutland with the Rev. Gordon Naser, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery in Rye, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made to United Church, West Rutland, 05777 or a favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home in West Rutland.

Nathan H. Smith

SHREWSBURY — Nathan Harold Smith, 48, died Jan. 28, 2002, in a logging accident in Shrewsbury.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Aldous Funeral Home.

Hendrick K. Arnold

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Hendrick Kip Arnold died on January 24, 2002, in Pensacola, Florida.

He was a life-long lover of jazz, spinner of stories, and a man who deeply valued family and friends.

Hendrick was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1918, to the Rev. Fredrick Arnold and Sarah Goode. He graduated from Harvard College in 1939.

He was happily married to Patricia Henry from 1941 until her death in 1990. They had three children, Patricia, Deborah and Hendrick Kip Jr., six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Hendrick was fortunate in his second happy marriage to Katherine Hale in 1993, through whom he enjoyed two stepchildren.

He co-owned and managed Wilson Country Camera in Rutland, Vermont, where he served as president of the School Board and was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce and Trinity Episcopal Church. Friends and family will miss his quick, quirky wit and his gift for celebration.

Albert H. Heath

Albert H. Heath, 79, of Rutland Town, died Jan. 27, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 25, 1922, in Rutland, the son of George and Mae (Stevens) Heath.

He was a painting and building contractor and a repairman with Wilbur DuBray Small Engine Repair Co.

Mr. Heath was a World War II Army Veteran, serving in the European Theater of Operations.

He was a 50-year member of the Eagles Club.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Frances (Amerio) Heath of Rutland Town; a daughter, Jeannie DuBray of Rutland Town; a son, Charles Heath of Rutland Town; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

There will be no funeral service. Burial will take place at a later date in Cheney Hill Cemetery in Rutland Town.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vermont Kidney Association, P.O. Box 244, Burlington, 05401.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Virginia G. Carvey

FAIR HAVEN — Virginia Gray Carvey, 82, died Jan. 28, 2002, at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Llewellyn Roberts

DANVILLE — Llewellyn “Bob” Roberts, longtime Vermont educator and former superintendent of Danville schools, died Saturday morning, Jan. 26, 2002. He was 93.

His career as a Vermont educator spanned 49 years in the towns of Danby, Wallingford and Danville. He was a native of Fair Haven.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Hamilton) Roberts; six children, Priscilla Roberts Carpenter of Burlington, Prudence Roberts Westerberg (husband Frederick) of Fryeburg, Maine, Polly Roberts Rowland of Burlington, John L. Roberts (wife Linda) of Raleigh, N.C., Judith H. Roberts of Waterbury Center, Jeanne Roberts Adams (husband John) of Terrell, N.C.; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sinah Roberts of Fair Haven and Elizabeth Smith of Framingham, Mass. He was predeceased by two sisters, Anne Garvey and Katie Roberts; and one brother, Alfred Roberts.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Danville Congregational Church with the pastor, the Rev. Rona Tyndall, officiating. Burial will be in May in Danville Green Cemetery.
