Melvin E. Elmore
PITTSFORD — Melvin Earl Elmore, 70, died Jan. 13, 2002, at Helen Porter Health & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.
He was born in Ferndale, Mich., the son of Arthur and Jennie (Koviak) Elmore.
He received his education in Ferndale schools and graduated from Ferndale High School in 1949. He later graduated from Henry Ford Technical College in 1959.
He married Frances Huff on April 13, 1957, in Royal Oak, Mich.
Mr. Elmore worked with the Cadillac Division of General Motors Corp. in Michigan, retiring in 1985 as a die maker. After moving to Vermont, he worked as an adaptive equipment worker at the Brandon Training School until it closed in 1993.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Signal Corps during the Korean War.
He was a member of the Brandon Congregational Church.
Survivors include his wife of Pittsford; three sons, Paul Elmore of Middlebury, Thomas Elmore of Barrow, Alaska, and Daniel Elmore of Madison Heights, Mich.; two daughters, Carol Coburn of Royal Oak, Mich., and Nancy Elmore of Nicholasville, Ky.; a brother, Bradford Elmore of Vandalia, Ill.; a sister, Ruth Fiacco of Seminole, Fla.; and three grandsons.
He was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Elmore in 2000.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Brandon Congregational Church with the Rev. Richard White, pastor, officiating. Cremation will follow the service. A private graveside committal service and burial will take place at a later date.
Following the service the family will receive friends in the church hall for a time of fellowship and reflection.
Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Albert L. Sutherland
BRANDON — Albert L. Sutherland, 92, died Jan. 14, 2002, at his home.
The memorial service is pending for Thursday at the Brandon Congregational Church.
There will be no calling hours.

Owen J. Politano Infant
BRANDON — Owen James Politano, born December 14, 2001, died in the arms of his parents on January 12, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He joins his twin sister Gabriella in eternal peace.
He is survived by his parents, Paul and Erika Politano of Brandon, Vt.; grandparents, Tom Politano, previously of Wilmington, Vt., and Karl and Diane Neuse of Middlebury, Vt.; aunts, Susan LaRosa of Ballston Spa, N.Y., Kirsten Hano of Wellesley, Mass.; uncle Tom Politano of Malta, N.Y.; several cousins, great-grandmothers, great-aunts and uncles. He is predeceased by his grandmother, Carol Ann Politano of Wilmington, Vt.
A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Middlebury, Vt., on Saturday, January 19, at 11 a.m.

Robert E. Dakin
COLCHESTER — Robert E. Dakin, 52, formerly of Rutland, died Jan. 14, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care following a brief illness.
There will be no calling hours.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Malletts Bay with interment to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ready Funeral Home in Burlington.
Bruce Badgley
CLARENDON SPRINGS — The memorial service for Bruce Badgley, 65, who died Jan. 1, 2002, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Grace Congregational United Church of Christ in Rutland.

Shirley A. Udart Rites
The funeral service for Shirley A. (LaCoe) Udart, 73, of Rutland, who died Jan. 9, 2002, was held Monday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with the Rev. Charles D’Avignon of Burlington officiating. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Rutland.
Organist was Richard Brown and soloist was Lori Routhier.
Reader was Charles LaChance.
Bearers were Ed LaRose, a son-in-law of Poultney, Joe Merchand of Montreal and Ron Fairbanks and Tony Merchand, both of Rutland.
A prayer service was held Sunday at the Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Raymond Walsh, chaplain of the Loretto Home in Rutland.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
William M. Comstock Rites
The funeral Mass for William M. Comstock, 75, of Rutland, who died Jan. 11, 2002, was celebrated Monday at St. Peter’s Church in Rutland with the Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor, officiating. Concelebrant was the Rev. John Herbert, associate pastor. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.
Organist was John Riddle and vocalist was Carl Mazzariello.
Readers were Helena Kessop and Ann Marie Lozier.
Bearers were William Comstock Jr. and Matthew Lee, grandsons of Rutland, and nephews, Darren Alberico and Michael Comstock of Rutland, T.J. Kessop of West Rutland and Christopher Notte of Castleton.
A prayer service was held Sunday at the Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Houle.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
Matthew F. Krysztofik Rites
WEST RUTLAND — The funeral Mass for Matthew F. Krysztofik, 89, who died Jan. 10, 2002, was celebrated Saturday at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with the Rev. Frank S. Warzocha, pastor, officiating. Concelebrants were the Rev. Thomas V. Mattison, assistant pastor of Christ the King Church in Rutland, and the Rev. Raymond D. Walsh, chaplain of the Loretto Home in Rutland.
Organist was Dorothy Blicharz.
Bearers were Joseph Przybylo, Joseph Bartlett, Brian Cole, Brian Coombs, Dean Pierce and Walter Hyjek.
A prayer service was held Friday at the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Warzocha.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
Lawrence E. Balestra Rites
WALLINGFORD — The memorial service for Lawrence “Eddy” Balestra, 39, who died Jan. 11, 2002, was held Monday at the Wallingford-Aldous Funeral Home. The burial of ashes followed in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Speakers were Dennis Smith, Mr. Balestra’s friend and employer, and Laura (Buck) Balestra, Mr. Balestra’s mother.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home.
Steven M. Malcher
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Steven M. Malcher, 31, died Jan. 10, 2002, at home.
He was born March 3, 1970, in Lebanon, N.H., the son of Stanley and Roberta (Crewe) Malcher.
He attended school in Hartford.
He worked as a mechanic for Robert Roberts until becoming disabled.
Survivors include his parents of White River Junction; three daughters, Angel and Natasha Malcher of West Fairlee and Alicia Malcher of Claremont, N.H.; a sister, Lynda Shand of Grand Isle; three half-sisters, Brenda Sanborn of Guilford, Valerie Porter of East Randolph and Vicki Waterbury of Canaan, N.H.; three half-brothers, Kevin Ray of Arkansas, Eric Malcher of Ohio and Stanley Malcher of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by four half-brothers.
Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Madeline Hewitt
SPRINGFIELD — Madeline Hewitt, 88, died Jan. 13, 2002, at Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.
She was born July 27, 1913, in Springfield, the daughter of Ralph and Lena (Tarbell) Hartley.
She graduated from Springfield High School in 1931 and Brattleboro Business Institute in 1932.
She married Ray Hewitt in 1935. Mr. Hewitt died in 1984.
Mrs. Hewitt worked for Western Union as a telegraph operator for many years and later as a bookkeeper for the Springfield school system.
She enjoyed knitting and designing sweaters. She also enjoyed baking cookies and breads and then giving them away.
Survivors include a son, Curtis, of Burlington; a granddaughter and grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Francis, and a sister, Barbara Veysey.
There will be no funeral service. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Mildred M. Barry
SPRINGFIELD — Mildred M. Barry, 88, formerly of Mount View Apartments, died Jan. 14, 2002, at Springfield Hospital.
She was born July 27, 1913, in Newaygo, Mich., the daughter of William and Katherine (McCabe) Law.
She attended schools in Michigan.
She married Harold Barry on Dec. 13, 1952, in Springfield. He died in 1987.
Mrs. Barry was a member of the Springfield Moose Lodge.
She enjoyed baking, growing flowers and fishing.
Survivors include three sons, Curtis Knapp of Arizona, Richard Knapp of Townshend and Brian Knapp of Cottonwood, Ariz.; a daughter, Judith Brown of Wallingford; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Milton Law and Bill Law; and three sisters, Grace Parker, Winifred Hollock and Virginia Gilson.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Richard Cederholm, pastor of the North Springfield Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will take place in Oakland Cemetery at a later date.
There will be no visiting hours.
