Shirley A. Udart
Shirley A. Udart, 73, of Rutland died Jan. 9, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
She was born June 3, 1928, in Rutland, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Previe) LaCoe.
She attended Mount St. Joseph Academy and graduated from Rutland High School in 1948.
Mrs. Udart was employed by Wolk’s Tots ’n Teens in Rutland for several years.
She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and former member of St. Anne’s Society.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Udart; a daughter, Laurie LaRose of Poultney; and a granddaughter.
She was predeceased by a sister, Janice LaCoe in 1998.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Rutland at a later date.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Hazel B. Smith
Hazel Bliss Smith, 83, of Rutland died Jan. 10, 2002, at Roncalli Health Care Facility after a brief illness.
She was born May 26, 1918, in Strafford, the daughter of Roland and Lenora (Chamberlain) Scribner.
Mrs. Smith was a longtime resident of the Rutland and Brandon area, and was employed by Blueberry Hill Inn in Goshen and several local bakeries and restaurants prior to her retirement.
She was an avid gardener and enjoyed working outdoors with her plants and vegetables.
Survivors include a daughter, Annie Griffin of Brandon; a son, Roland Smith of North Chittenden; a sister, Harriett Halibaugh of Nevada; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Cassius “Bud” Smith.
A private burial is pending for Tuesday in Glenford Cemetery in Scituate, R.I.
Friends may call Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

John E. Harvey
BUXTON, Maine — John E. Harvey, 71, died Jan. 3, 2002, at Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Newton, Mass., the son of Robert and Katherine (Pooler) Harvey, and raised by his father and stepmother, Eugelia Harvey.
He attended schools in Lexington and Bedford, Mass.
Mr. Harvey worked for Gulf Oil Corp. as a truck driver for more than 25 years. Later, he and his wife owned and operated Two Trails Diner. Most recently, he worked for Blue Rock Industry.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 101st Airborne Division during the Korean War.
Mr. Harvey enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Phyllis (Parker) Harvey; five sons, Robert Harvey of Gray, John Harvey Jr. of Burlington, Vt., Kenneth Harvey of Rutland, Vt., and C. Charles DiCiccio and Jeffrey Harvey, both of Limington; four daughters, Denise Williams of Windham, Lisa Daniels of Buxton, Leslie Kaigel of Burlington, Vt., and Martha Raymond of Rutland, Vt.; a brother, Michael Harvey of New Jersey; two sisters, Betty Ann Cleveland of Florida and Carolyn Igo of Georgia; and several grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a granddaughter in 1981.
A gathering of family and friends was held Sunday at Center Board Yacht Club in South Portland.

Matthew F. Krysztofik
WEST RUTLAND — Matthew F. Krysztofik, 89, died Jan. 10, 2002, at Roncalli Health Center in Rutland.
He was born Oct. 2, 1912, in West Rutland, the son of Boleslaw and Stephania (Stanulewicz) Krysztofik.
He was employed as a foreman for Vermont Marble Co. for many years, retiring in 1978.
Mr. Krysztofik was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, the Holy Name Society and Polish Roman Catholic Union. He was a former member of the Taconic Sportsman Club.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Krysztofik of West Rutland; a son, Edward Krysztofik of Rio Rancho, N.M.; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sophie (Przybylo) Krysztofik in 1979; three brothers, Walter Krysztofik, John Krysztofik and Frank Krysztofik; and three sisters, Natalie Michalowicz, Jennie Lizewski and Mollie Hyjek.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Friends may call today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home.

Nicholas E. Drexel
CASTLETON — Nicholas Edward Drexel, 37, a former resident of Castleton, died Jan. 9, 2002, at his home in Beacon, N.Y.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Fair Haven with the Rev. Marshall Hudson-Knapp, pastor, officiating.
Friends may call Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

FAIR HAVEN — The funeral service for Frederick Edmund Bitting, 91, who died Jan. 3, 2002, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven with the Rev. Ashley Meade officiating. The graveside committal service and burial will take place at a later date in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Jacob Miller
BARNARD — Jacob Miller, 81, died Jan. 6, 2002, at his home.
He was born April 28, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Albert and Margaret (Herrscher) Miller.
Mr. Miller served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and while stationed in Lincoln, Neb., he married Jean Jackson on Sept. 14, 1942. She died in 1995.
Survivors include a sister, Marilyn Gilbert of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.
There will be no services and burial will be private.

Dorothy H. Taxter
MANCHESTER — Dorothy H. Taxter, 95, a lifelong resident of Manchester, died Thursday morning, January 10, 2002, at the Centers for the Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a short illness. She was born in Manchester, January 14, 1906, the daughter of Luther Arnold and Cora Hoyt. She attended Manchester schools. She later married Russell Taxter. Mr. Taxter died in 1964.
Dorothy and Russell raised a loving family. Dorothy was a hard worker and could not be kept at home. She worked in shipping sales and retail sales in Manchester businesses such as Whipple’s Pharmacy, Coburn House and Orvis Co. She kept herself very busy and would say, “I don’t have time for hobbies.” The many people she touched in life will dearly miss her feisty spirit.
She is survived by her two sons, Russell Taxter and his wife, Glenna, of Manchester and George D. Bauersfeld of Peekskill, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Barbara Lippert, John Gilbert, Keith Bauersfeld, Jaine Ackley, Lori Taxter, Thomas Bauersfeld and Paula Catalina; and her great-grandchildren, Colleen Lippert, Christopher Gilbert, Amanda Gilbert, Brandon Gilbert, Rachel Ackley, Arianna Bauersfeld, Alicia Bauersfeld, Andrea Catalina, Lisa Catalina and Frank Catalina. She was predeceased by her daughter, Barbara Gilbert.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Sunday, January 13, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Manchester. Following the service all are invited to the church hall for a time of fellowship. Friends may call Saturday, January 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester. Burial will take place in the Factory Point Cemetery in Manchester in the springtime.

Frances M. Burke
BENNINGTON — Frances M. Burke, 90, died Jan. 10, 2002, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington after a long illness.
She was born Sept. 11, 1911, in Pittsfield, Mass., the daughter of Frank and Mary (Gray) Burke.
She received her education in Pittsfield, Mass., and later received a registered nursing degree at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
Miss Burke had been employed as a registered nurse at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
She was a member of RSVP in Bennington.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Burke; and three sisters, Kathleen Farnam, Margaret Charpentier and Ann Cronin.
The graveside committal service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Pittsfield, Mass.
At the family’s request, there will be no funeral service or calling hours.

Joseph Corey
ARLINGTON — Joseph Corey, 43, died Jan. 9, 2002, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center after a battle with cancer.
He was born June 7, 1958, in Bennington, the son of Walter and Mary (Derosia) Corey.
He married Vicki Wilkins on July 10, 1989.
Mr. Corey graduated from Arlington Memorial High School and attended Castleton State College, where he played on its basketball teams. He worked at various businesses in the local area.
Mr. Corey coached at AMHS for 16 years. He amassed more than 150 wins with the Arlington basketball program. He was the Marble Valley League Coach of the Year four times. His team won the Vermont State Division III State Championship in 1998. He was Vermont’s nominee for the National Federation Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2000.
He loved participating in as well as watching all types of sports. He was a great fan of the New York Yankees and Knicks.
Survivors include his wife; seven siblings, Donald Corey of Bennington, Sandra Nichol of Boxboro, Mass., Nancy Sheldon, Jim Corey and Joanne Christiansen, all of Arlington, Jeff Corey of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and Sue Bahr of Phoenix, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Arlington.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary’s Church in Arlington. Burial will follow in St. Columban’s Cemetery in Arlington.
