Lester E. Greeno

CHITTENDEN — Lester E. Greeno, 83, died Dec. 29, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Greeno was born on July 7, 1918, in Proctor, the son of Francis E. and Veda M. (Jenks) Greeno.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of West Rutland American Legion Post 87.

He was employed for many years in the shipping department of the Howe Richardson Scale Co.

He was a long-time member of the Mendon Methodist Church and a 70-year member of Deermont Grange 368 and Marble Valley Grange 567. He also belonged to the Killington-Pomona Grange 14 and the National Grange. He was president of the East Pittsford Cemetery Association.

He enjoyed maple sugaring and spending time in the woods.

He is survived by two daughters, Shirleen Thompson of Sarasota, Fla., and Lucinda Vandenburg of Rutland Town; two sons, William Greeno of Chittenden and David Greeno of Porter, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Arleen, in 1989, and by two brothers, Lawrence and Donald.

The funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. A Grange service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in East Pittsford Cemetery in East Pittsford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Robert Dauphinais Memorial Fund, in care of Rutland Senior High School, 22 Stratton Road, Rutland, 05701.

Kilburn O. Matte

FAIR HAVEN — Kilburn O. Matte, 92, a lifelong resident of Fair Haven, died Saturday evening, Dec. 29, 2001, at Eden park Nursing Home in Rutland after a long illness.

Kilburn was born on May 19, 1909, in Fair Haven, the son of the late Ovey Matte and Mabel (Gravel-Hopper) Matte. He was a graduate of Fair Haven High School, Class of 1928.

As a young man, Kilburn worked for Carpenter’s slate business in Fair Haven, and he later learned the meat cutting trade from Ray Little of Little’s Meat Market, where he was employed from 1937 to 1948. He then became the manager of the General Mills Feed Store in Fair Haven from 1948 to 1958, at which time the company left the Fair Haven area and he assumed a position as an automobile salesman, general manager and eventually a junior partner of Smith’s Garage in Fair Haven, where he worked until his retirement.

During his working career, Kilburn received numerous sales awards, both as manager of the General Mills Feed Store and at Smith’s Garage for obtaining and exceeding his sales quotas. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, he worked diligently to raise funding for the new Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland, and after his retirement he gave countless hours to his hometown of Fair Haven by manning the Fair Haven Information Booth on Main Street to assist travelers with directions and attractions in the Lakes Region Area for several years. Among family and friends, he was a well known history buff, loved sports and enjoyed a good discussion of current events.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fair Haven and a member of the Fair Haven Seniors Group.

Mr. Matte is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mrs. Grace (Williams) Matte of Fair Haven; his two sons, Mr. K. Joseph Matte and his wife, Elizabeth, of Fair Haven, Mr. David F. Matte and his wife, Lauren, of Brookfield, Conn.; his seven grandchildren, Cheryl Morris and her husband, Michael, of Hubbardton, Susan Hornbeck and her husband, Jeffrey, of Whiting, Michele Christian and her husband, Michael, of Orwell, Nancy Vicar and her husband, Anton, of Woodstock, Christine Dubroff and her husband, Nicholas, of Charlottesville, Va., and Jeffrey Matte and Jane Matte, both of Brookfield, Conn.; his nine great-grandchildren; and also by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Mrs. Irene Hutchins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven. The Rev. Richard Tinney, parish priest, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be at a later date in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fair Haven.

Following the Mass, his family will receive friends and relatives in the Social Hall of the United Methodist Church of Fair Haven for a time of fellowship.

Visiting hours will be Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 North Main St., Fair Haven.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Kilburn may be given to the United Methodist Church of Fair Haven or to Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church.

Ines W. LaRose Rites

WELLS — A memorial service for Mrs. Ines W. LaRose, 80, who died Dec. 26, 2001, at her home in Wells, was conducted Saturday at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney. Arthur Ritchie, pastor of the Raceville (N.Y.) Methodist Church, officiated. Burial followed in the Mettowee Valley Cemetery in Pawlet with Pastor Ritchie leading the committal prayers.

Words of remembrance written by Mrs. LaRose’s granddaughter, Bonnie, were read by Mary Burrows. Pastor Ritchie also offered thoughts written by her family.

The Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home of Poultney was in charge of arrangements.

Ellen I. Kelley Rites

The funeral service for Ellen I. (Johnson) Kelley, 87, of Rutland, who died Dec. 27, 2001, was held Saturday in the Clifford Funeral Home. The Rev. Adam Krempa, pastor of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Poultney, officiated.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Rutland with the Rev. Krempa officiating.

Bearers were Robert R. Kelley Jr., a grandson, and Richard Rivers, both of West Rutland, Joe Guitar of Whitehall, N.Y., and Roger Johnson of Bellows Falls.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ellen Kelley Memorial Fund, in care of Robert and Jane Kelley, P.O. Box 371, West Rutland, 05777.

Helen F. Willard

SPRINGFIELD — Helen F. Willard, 89, died Dec. 30, 2001, at Springfield Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born June 13, 1912, in Swampscott, Mass., the daughter of Joseph and Florence (Lockwood) Warren. She attended schools in Londonderry. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Wesley Severance.

She made her home in Springfield for the past 64 years. She worked as a dietician for the Springfield school system and for Springfield Hospital.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Springfield for more than 50 years.

Survivors include two sons, Roger L. Willard of Stafford Springs, Conn., and James R. Willard of Anaheim, Calif.; a sister, Edna Severance of Springfield; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Marshall P. Willard; by a daughter, Margaret Brehme; by a brother, Gordon Severance, and by a sister, Mabel Hart.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Nelson, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.

There will be no visiting hours.

Contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Southeastern Vermont, 366 River St., Springfield, 05156.

The Davis Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

James T. Keefe

ASCUTNEY — James T. Keefe, 84, died Dec. 29, 2001, at his home in Ascutney.

He was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Bellows Falls, the son of Cornelius and Bridgett (Doyle) Keefe.

He attended school in Bellows Falls.

He married Catherine Farr in Fair Haven on June 20, 1936. She died in 1992.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He worked on farms and for construction companies for a few years. He later worked at the A.G. Dewey Woolen Mill in Quechee, the American Woolen Co. in Lebanon, N.H., the B & M Railroad as a car inspector and the Cone-Blanchard Machine Co., where he worked until he retired in 1982.

Mr. Keefe was a member of American Legion Post 25, DAV Chapter 1, Father Fontaine Council of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Francis of Assisi Church, all in Windsor. He was a member of VFW Post 771 in Springfield.

Survivors include his companion, Margaret Snyer of Ascutney; a daughter, Donna Keefe of Hartford; two sons, Richard Keefe of Newport, N.H., and Thomas Keefe of Florida; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and a nephew.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, James Keefe, by a brother and a sister.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor. The Rev. Paul N. Belhumeur, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery in Windsor.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 30 Union St., P.O. Box 46, Windsor, 05089.

The Knight Funeral Home in Windsor is in charge of arrangements.

Francis M. Bixby

LUDLOW — Francis M. Bixby, 77, died at his home Dec. 30, 2001.

The Adams & Kenney Funeral Home in Ludlow is in charge of arrangements.

Jane Lambert

GAYSVILLE — Jane Lambert, 45, died suddenly Dec. 29, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

She was born Nov. 23, 1956, in Randolph, the daughter of Frank H. And Lois (Larmie) Lambert.

She graduated from Rochester High School. She was a lifetime resident of Gaysville.

She had worked at her father’s business, Lambert Power Equipment, for 22 years. She did income tax preparation, and had been a carrier for the Rutland Herald and Valley News. Most recently she was a clerk at Wal-Mart in West Lebanon, N.H.

She enjoyed fishing, camping and auto racing, especially the American Canadian Tour, Thunder Road and NASCAR.

Survivors include two sons, Christopher Lambert of Gaysville and Jonathan Lambert, serving in the U.S. Army in Germany; her parents of Gaysville; two brothers, Dennis Lambert of Barnard and David Lambert of Tunbridge; two sisters, Joyce Lambert and Jeanette Pearson, both of North Carolina; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 52 Pike Drive, Berlin, 05602, or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Springfield, Mass.

Helen B. Hubbell

MANCHESTER CENTER — Helen Bulkley Hubbell, 90, of Manchester Center, died Dec. 30, 2001, at Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington.

Ms. Hubbell is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Barbara Mitchell of Richmond, Va., and Mrs. Marion Taylor of Mechanicsville, Va., and several grand-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

She donated her body for anatomical studies to the University of Vermont Medical School.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Manchester Health Services through the Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester Center, 05255.

Merideth E. Jermain

VERGENNES — Merideth Eleanor (Sherman) Jermain, 87, died Dec. 30, 2001, at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury.

She was born on Dec. 26, 1914, in New Haven, the daughter of Clinton and Bertha (Weston) Sherman.

She spent most of her life in New Haven. She worked in the New Haven Post Office and was librarian at Beeman Academy for over 20 years.

She married Cecil Jermain, who died in 1970.

She moved to Vergennes in 1976. She became a member of the Vergennes Congregational Church, the Women’s Fellowship and the Senior Citizens of Vergennes.

She cared for many children in the community.

Survivors include Dawn Shepard of Monkton and Lisa Tracy of Bristol, whom she raised; two nieces, a nephew, and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Sherman.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Vergennes Congregational Church. Burial will be in Prospect Cemetery in Vergennes.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vergennes Congregational Church or the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, Vergennes, 05491.

The Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes is in charge of arrangements.

Betty E. McCray

MIDDLEBURY — Betty Elizabeth McCray, 75, died Dec. 29, 2001, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

She was born in Florence on May 5, 1926, the daughter of Fred Sr. and Helen (Martin) Landon.

She worked at Brandon Training School and at Van Raalte Clothing in Middlebury.

She married Roger McCray on Feb. 6, 1953, in Vergennes. They operated a dairy farm in Shoreham for more than 40 years until retiring and moving to Middlebury in 1997.

She enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycles, gardening and cooking.

Survivors include her husband; a son, James McCray of Shoreham; two brothers, Chester Landon of Rutland and Arthur Landon of Granville, N.Y.; two sisters, Janet Duffany of Bridport and Marianne Turpin of Shoreham; a grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Fred Landon Jr.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Sanderson Funeral Chapel on South Main Street in Middlebury with the Rev. Nicholas Thornblade, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Orwell, officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Shoreham.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fletcher Allen Health Care Dialysis Unit, 35 Joy Drive, South Burlington, 05403.
