Bette J. Jewett

BENNINGTON — Bette J. Jewett, 54, of Bennington died Dec. 22, 2001, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation, following a long illness associated with diabetes.

She was born in Bennington Dec. 22, 1947, the daughter of Clyde C. Sherman Jr. and Alice A. Hathaway Sherman.

Mrs. Jewett was a lifelong resident of Bennington, attending local schools, including Bennington High School.

She had worked as a bartender and waitress at the Notch Restaurant.

She was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge Auxiliary and a former member of the Eagles and VFW Post 1332 of Bennington.

She enjoyed crafts, crocheting and cooking.

Mrs. Jewett is survived by a son, Jeffrey Jewett, and a daughter, Shirley Jewett, both of Bennington; two brothers, Carl Sherman and Clyde Sherman III, both of Bennington; four sisters, Carol Brace, Rita Prouty and Hazel Harris, all of Bennington, and Lynn Smith of Jacksonville, N.C.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service will be held at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Wednesday at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Ty Campbell officiating. Burial service will take place Thursday at 1 p.m. in Woodford Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Bennington Area Home Health Agency, the Second Chance Animal Shelter or the Bennington Rescue Squad, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, 05201.

Doris K. Kehoe Rites

BENNINGTON — A Mass for Mrs. Doris Kehoe, 73, who died Dec. 18, 2001, was celebrated Saturday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. The Rev. Robert Lozinski, pastor, officiated. Burial followed in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.

Organist was Donald McMahon.

Bearers were grandchildren Travis Kehoe, Ryan Kehoe and Kirk Parizo, and a friend, Brooke Remington.

Robert E. Peckham Rites

NORTH BENNINGTON — The funeral service for Robert E. Peckham, who died Dec. 18, 2001, was held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Saturday with the Rev. Richard Limarande, pastor of the Petersburgh Baptist Church, officiating. Burial took place in Park Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Limarande offering the committal prayers.

Bearers were grandsons John D. Peckham, Daniel S. Peckham, and Robert E. Peckham II, nephews Todd and Joel Peckham, and William Rogers.

Military honors included presentation of the flag to Mr. Peckham’s wife by Joseph Krawczyk Sr..

Lucille A. Monroe

SHAFTSBURY — Lucille A. Monroe, 69, of Shaftsbury died Dec. 22, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Bennington March 8, 1932, the daughter of Asa Davis and Lucy M. (Dunne) Davis. She received her education in Bennington.

She married Donald H. Monroe on July 3, 1986, in Shaftsbury.

She worked at EZ Mill, Union Carbide Corp., Fishmans and as a nurse’s aide at Crescent Manor Nursing Home. She later worked as a sales clerk and short order cook at Woolworth’s in Bennington.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, knitting and reading.

Survivors include her husband of Shaftsbury; four daughters, Cheryl Bailey of Reno, Nev., Susan Karkut of Denmark, Wisc., Carol Minke of Shaftsbury, and Melissa Ann Minke of West Pawlet; a son, Stephen Birch-Lyle of Claremont, N.H.; a stepdaughter, Pamela Bodenstab Krynicki of Wilbraham, Mass.; a stepson, Toby Bodenstab of Shaftsbury; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held today at 10 a.m. in Rosewood Cemetery in White Creek, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Chapter of the American Cancer Society or the Second Chance Animal Shelter, through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Jeanne G. Finclair

BENNINGTON — Jeanne Greengold Finclair, 98, of Bennington, died Dec. 22, 2001, at Crescent Manor Care Center.

She was born in Harkow, Russia, Jan. 15, 1903.

She received her education in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

She married David Finclair in 1939 in New York City. He died in 1974.

In earlier years, Mrs. Finclair worked as a legal secretary for Weill, Gotschal and Manges in New York City.

Survivors include a son, Barry Finclair, and a daughter, Ida Faiella, both of Shaftsbury; a granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside committal service will be held in Park Lawn Cemetery Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., with Rabbi Jeff Goldwasser of Congregation Beth Israel in North Adams, Mass., officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Crescent Manor Care Center Activities Fund through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Frances J. Fanning Rites

SHAFTSBURY — The funeral service for Mrs. Frances Jeane Fanning, who died Dec. 17, 2001, was held at the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church Saturday with the Rev. Deborah Trolenberg, pastor, officiating.

Organist was Eleanor Lawrence. Anthony Ayers, a grandson, sang a hymn.

Following the service, a remembrance gathering was held in the church hall.

The Mahar & Son Funeral Home of Bennington was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy L. Howald

ANDOVER — Dorothy Lee (Simon) Howald, 75, a homemaker, died Dec. 21, 2001, at home after a lengthy illness.

She was born July 29, 1926, in Massillon, Ohio, the daughter of Arvine J. and Belva B. Simon.

She spent many hours volunteering.

Survivors include her husband, Christian G. Howald; two sons, David Howald of Andover and Jerry Howald of Louisville, Ohio; two daughters, Becky Lopez of Massillon, Ohio, and Susan Whalen of North Canton, Ohio; a brother, Charles Simon and two sisters, Betty Spangler and Ila Weisgarber of Massillon, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Andover Community Church in Andover.

Memorial contributions may be made to World Vision Inc., P.O. Box 0172, Tacoma, Wash., 98481-0172, or to the Gill Home, Activities Department, in Ludlow.

Anna E. Morin

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. — Anna Ella Morin, 88, died Dec. 21, 2001, at Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa.

She was born Feb. 21, 1913, in Middlebury, Vt., the daughter of Elmer and Elizabeth (Kenmore) Novak. She graduated from Middlebury High School.

She worked for many years as a waitress at the Middlebury Inn and later for other eateries before moving to Ballston Spa.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed playing bingo.

Survivors include three daughters, Jean Hadley of North Haven, Conn., Elinor White of Clifton Park and Paula Sharkey of Livingston, N.J.; a brother, Charles Novak of Middlebury; two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn Gilbert; by four brothers; by a sister, and by her former husband, Rene Morin.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Sanderson Funeral Chapel in Middlebury. A graveside committal service and burial will take place at a later date in Middlebury Cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Evelyn W. Bock

HOLLISTON, Mass. — Evelyn W. (Wallace) Bock, 83, died Dec. 21, 2001, at her home.

Born in Bladen, Neb., she was the daughter of the late Curtis and Ethel (Anders) Wallace.

She was the wife of the late Linden F. Bock.

Mrs. Bock was a resident of Holliston for the past 11 years and was formerly of Clifton Park, N.Y.

She is survived by her sons, Frederick C. Bock of Orange, Calif., and Rodney G. Bock of Ralston, Neb.; daughters Linda B. Zaichkowsky of Holliston and Debra Bock Helin of Keene, N.H.; a brother, Harold Wallace of Cape Coral, Fla.; two sisters, her twin Irene Muhleisen of Blue Hill, Neb., and Zelma Hinrichs of Hastings, Neb.; her grandchildren, Kristin Lappala, Nicole Klaasmeyer, David and Douglas Bock, Jennifer Whelling, Justin and Bryan Zaichkowsky, and Katie and Kelsey Helin; and three great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Vernon Wallace.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Chesmore Funeral Home, 854 Washington St., Route 16, Holliston, Mass. The Rev. James W. Berry of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Keene, N.H., will officiate. Burial will follow in Lake Grove Cemetery in Holliston.

Calling hours will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local Arthritis Foundation.

Iola M. Hayes

BRANDON - Iola Marion Hayes, 75, died Sept. 3, 2001, at her home.

She was born Sept. 8, 1925, in Goshen, the daughter of Archie and Marion (Williams) Euber.

She received her education in the Brandon schools.

Mrs. Hayes was a member of the Brandon American Legion Unit 55 Ladies Auxiliary and Brandon United Methodist Church.

She was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. She also enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors include four sons, Richard Forrest of Gloversville, N.Y., Stanley Forrest of Brandon, Joseph Forrest of Leicester and Howard "Butch" Palmer of Brandon; two sisters, Violet Julius of Bennington and Marion Stearns of Rutland; 32 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, William G. Hayes; and a daughter, Lois Palmer.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon with the Rev. Kathleen Bevan, pastor of the Brandon United Methodist Church, officiating. The graveside committal service and burial will follow in Forest Dale Cemetery.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Brandon Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 232, Brandon, 05733.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home.

Lois E. Porchesa

BRANDON - Lois E. Porchesa, 81, died Sept. 4, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Brandon.

She was born March 31, 1920, in Huntington, the daughter of Richard and Iva (Thayer) Fielder.

She graduated from Richmond High School in 1938 and attended Johnson Teacher's College.

She married Guy King Jr. on Sept. 8, 1940, in Huntington. He died in 1961. She later married Edward Porchesa in 1971. He died in 1986. She married Robert Baker on Aug. 8, 1997, in Brandon.

Mrs. Porchesa worked as a nurse's aide at the old Brandon Training School for many years and later at Rutland Hospital for several years. She also worked as a prep cook at Basin Harbor Club in Vergennes.

She attended the Whiting Community Church.

She had traveled extensively and was active as a foster grandparent at Neshobe School. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crossword puzzles and was an avid reader.

Survivors include her husband of Brandon; three sons, Joel King of Cornwall, Ira King of Spartansburg, Pa., and Eric King of Alton, Mass.; three daughters, Rae Scribner of Richmond, Mattie Scott of Poultney and Inga Hallett of Brandon; a sister, Zepherine Zeno of Huntington; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Melvin Fielder.

The memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon with the Rev. Robert Mathis, pastor of the Whiting Community Church, officiating. A private graveside committal service and burial will be held at a later date in Pleasant View Cemetery in Middletown Springs.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Rutland Area Visiting Nurse & Hospice, 7 Albert Cree Drive, Rutland, 05701 or Brandon Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 232, Brandon, 05733.

Esther A. Bassett

PITTSFORD - The graveside committal service for Esther A. Bassett, 86, who died Aug. 30, 2001, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery in Pittsford.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Franklin G. Minton Rites

POULTNEY - The memorial service for Franklin G. Minton, 76, who died Sept. 1, 2001, was held Wednesday at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney with the Rev. Alexander Stringer, pastor of St. David's Anglican Church, officiating. Burial followed in St. John's Cemetery in East Poultney.

The J. Claire Carmody Post 39, American Legion of Poultney, provided military services, and the Morning Star Lodge 37, F&M, conducted fraternal services.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney.
