Dorothy E. Counter

SPRINGFIELD — Dorothy Elizabeth Counter, 80, died Dec. 17, 2001, at Springfield Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born April 20, 1921, in Middlebury, the daughter of Robert and Gertrude (Delory) Counter.

Although retired, she was an active volunteer in her community, delivering Meals-on-Wheels, visiting area residents, wrapping silverware at the Family Center and watering flower boxes in town.

Survivors include two sisters, Beatrice Counter of Morrisville and Eleanor Counter of Charlotte; and the Grace family, William, Holly, Jamie Lee and Dakota, with whom she lived.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Robert Counter; and a sister, Rosalie Counter.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Springfield.

Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Charlestown Memorial Chapel in Charlestown, N.H.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Stringer Funeral Home.

Charles E. Watkins

BENNINGTON — Charles E. Watkins, 69, a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington and formerly of Rutland, died Dec. 15, 2001, after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 9, 1932, in Glens Falls, N.Y., the son of Charles and Mary (Rondeau) Watkins.

He received his education in Port Henry (N.Y.) schools.

Mr. Watkins had been employed as a laborer with different businesses over the years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member of American Legion Post in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Mr. Watkins enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include a son and two daughters; two brothers, Robert Watkins of LaBelle, Fla., and Fredrick Watkins of New Hampshire; two sisters, Helen MacDougal of Elizabethtown, N.Y., and Roberta Pratt of North Clarendon; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Tom Shees and David Watkins.

The graveside service will be held in the spring in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph.

There will be no services at this time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the support of the family, to Clara Allard, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Esther Carpenter

NEWTOWN, Pa. — Esther Carpenter, 98, died Nov. 21, 2001, at her residence in Pennswood Village.

She was born June 4, 1903, in Meridan, Conn.

Ms. Carpenter graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1925, received her master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1927 and her doctorate from Yale University in 1932.

Ms. Carpenter was professor of zoology at Smith College in Northamton, Mass., from 1933 until her retirement in 1968. She was a fellow in biology at Bryn Mawr College and a research assistant in the department of embryology at Carnegie Institute in Washington, D.C. Ms. Carpenter spent several summers at Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Mass., where she did research on embryology and protozoology. She also did research at Strangeways Research Laboratory in Cambridge, England.

Ms. Carpenter also wrote many articles and abstracts concerning her fields of research.

She spent her summers at her home in Ludlow, Vt., and attended the Ludlow United Church.

Survivors include two nieces, Miracyl Damon of Turin, N.Y., and Frances Marks of Middletown, N.Y.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.

The memorial service will be held in Ludlow, Vt., at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the spring in Plymouth Cemetery in Plymouth, Vt.

Theresa Smith Rites

SPRINGFIELD — The funeral service for Theresa Ellen Smith, 56, who died Dec. 14, 2001, was held Monday at the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland with the Rev. Prescott Warren, pastor of the Green Mountain Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery in Killington.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home.

Alice D. Leduc

MIDDLEBURY — Alice D. Leduc, 84, died Dec. 15, 2001, at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury.

She was born Aug. 22, 1917, in St. Albert, Ontario, the daughter of Adelard and Delia (Legault) Rochon.

She married Oscar Leduc in February 1947 in St. Albert. They moved to Whiting, Vt., where they operated a dairy farm until her husband’s death in 1968.

After Mr. Leduc’s death, she continued to operate the dairy farm for several years and was active in the farming community.

She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Leicester Junction until she moved to Middlebury in 1977, where she became a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and active with the Middlebury Senior Citizens.

Mrs. Leduc enjoyed sewing, knitting and crochet.

Survivors include her children, Gisele Lizewski of The Villeges, Fla., and South Hero, Angele Yantz of Middlebury, Roger Leduc of Colchester, Marcel Leduc of Ripton, Suzanne Richard of Fairfax, Va., Yvon Leduc of Salisbury; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandsons; her siblings, Armand Rochon of Ottawa, Ontario, Donat Rochon and Cecile Rochon, both of St. Albert, Ontario; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a grandson in 1999; and five brothers, Alcide Rochon, Omer Rochon, Fernand Rochon, Aime Rochon and Leo Rochon, all of St. Albert.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Middlebury.

Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 150 Kennedy Dr., South Burlington, 05403, or American Diabetes Association Vermont, 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, 05446.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home.

R. Clarke Smith

R. Clarke Smith, 93, of Rutland, a well-known Rutland lawyer, died Dec. 18, 2001, at his home.

He was born July 20, 1908, in New York City, the son of Henry and Helen (Clarke) Smith.

He was educated at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., graduating in 1927, Yale College with an A.B. in 1931 and Harvard Law School with an L.L.B. in 1934. He was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1934 and the Vermont Bar in 1935.

Mr. Smith married Barbara Ware who died many years ago. He later married Mercie Cunningham who died in 1992.

R. Clarke Smith began his practice of law with Fenton, Wing and Morse in 1935, which later became the successor firm of Ryan Smith & Carbine, Ltd., a partnership which started in Rutland in 1922. This partnership was converted into the present professional corporation, Ryan Smith & Carbine Ltd. in 1974.

Mr. Smith was city attorney for the city of Rutland in 1949, president of the Rutland County Bar Association from 1948 to 1949 and president of the Vermont Bar Association from 1955 to1956.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served as a captain in the 186th Field Artillery Battalion in Omaha Beach. After his discharge he continued to be active with the Vermont National Guard and was recalled to active duty in the Korean War where he was in command of the 206th Field Artillery in Germany. He was discharged with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

He was a member and chairman of the Board of Bar Examiners. In 1983, the Vermont Bar Association gave him a Distinguished Service Award because of his long service as a member and chairman of the Board of Bar Examiners. He was accepted as a fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and was a long time trustee and counsel to Green Mountain College in Poultney, where in was awarded a doctorate degree in humane letters in 1994. Mr. Smith was also vice president and trustee of the Rutland Savings Bank.

He enjoyed gardening. He also donated 65 acres of land to the town of Clarendon where a town forest was created for recreational use by the elementary school children as well as other town residents.

Survivors include five grandchildren, Susan Gilbert of Lake Bomoseen, Katherine Ahner of Colorado, Richard Smith II of Washington, Deborah Craven of South Carolina and Janey Keough of Massachusetts; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Timothy Smith; a sister, Helen Gale; and a brother, George Smith.

The memorial service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Rutland with the Rev. Christopher Powell, pastor, officiating. A reception will follow in Nourse Hall at Trinity Church.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, 05702.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Frank Yee

Frank Yee, 92, of Rutland died Dec. 17, 2001, at his home.

He was born Sept. 26, 1909, in China, the son of Bain Yee.

He was employed by his family’s laundry business in Brooklyn, N.Y., before moving to Rutland in 1980. He then went to work for Kong Chow Restaurant in Rutland.

Survivors include three nephews, Richard Gee of Rutland, Ted Ng and Mason Ng, both of Los Angeles, Calif.

He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Bishop, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday fro 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Louis G. LaPiana

Louis G. LaPiana, 64, of Long Beach, Calif., and former resident of Rutland died Dec. 14, 2001, at Long Beach Veterans Administration Hospital in California.

He was born Oct. 31, 1937, in Rutland, the son of Michael and Josephine (Lemmo) LaPiana Sr.

He graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in 1955.

Mr. LaPiana was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Church, Disabled American Veterans and Paralized Veterans of America.

Survivors include a brother, Michael LaPiana of Rutland; a sister, Frances Grant of Fresno, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Rutland. A private burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Carroll S. Waite

MARSHFIELD, Mass. — Carroll S. Waite, 66, died Dec. 16 at home.

He was born in Rutland, Vt., and graduated from Rutland High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years, retiring from the South Weymouth Naval Station. He served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars on the USS Mississippi, USS Cambria, USS Chilton and USS Pocono. He received the Navy Achievement Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

After his retirement from the Navy, he worked as an auto damage appraiser for Arbella Insurance Co. until 1999.

Mr. Waite was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Marshfield, Fleet Reserve Association Branch 66, American Legion Post 31 in Rutland, Lopes-Ferris Korean War Veterans Association and charter member of Top 3 Military Retired Association.

He was recognized in the 1970 Outstanding Men of America.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine (Ciccone) Waite of Marshfield; four daughters, Debra Kroening of Mukwonago, Wisc., MaryAnn Hebert, Patricia Melone and Michelle Hale, all of Marshfield; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his stepmother, Viola Posmanter of Brandon, Vt.; a brother, John Waite of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two sisters, Harriet Eitapence and Mary Murphy, both of Rutland.

He was predeceased by his parents, George Waite Sr. and Margaret (Williams) Waite; and two brothers, Hugh Weir and George Waite Jr.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Green Harbor. Burial will follow in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Calling hours will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home in Marshfield.
