Mabel M. LeFrancois
Mabel Mae LeFrancois, 92, formerly of Rutland, died Nov. 20, 2001, at the Bethesda at Evanswood Nursing Facility in Kingston, Mass., after a long illness.
She was born May 16, 1909, in Pittsford, the daughter of Harry and Nellie (Wood) Houston.
She had worked at the Fairmont Restaurant of Rutland and Barber’s Restaurant in Mendon.
Mrs. LeFrancois was a member of Christ the King Church, and was active in the Foster Grandparent Program.
Survivors include a daughter, Marlene Keeley of Hanson, Mass.; a son, Ronald LeFrancois of Brighton, Mass.; two brothers; two grandsons and three great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alphonse “Jim” LeFrancois, in 1996.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Church. Burial will follow in St. Bridget’s Cemetery in West Rutland.
There will be no calling hours.

Thomas J. Corey
SHREWSBURY — Thomas J. Corey, 48, died Nov. 19, 2001, at his home after a long illness.
He was born Sept. 26, 1953, in South Wallingford, the son of Roy and Peggy (Woods) Corey.
He attended Wallingford High School.
He was employed at the General Electric Co. in Rutland from 1972 until 2000, when he retired due to health reasons.
Mr. Corey enjoyed racing motorcycles, working in his shop rebuilding his Corvette and maple sugaring.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn (Fisher) Corey of Shrewsbury; a son, Tom Corey Jr. of North Carolina; a daughter, Joy Bruno of Rutland; two stepdaughters, Erin Betourney of Malden, Mass., and Eliza Smith of Tinmouth; his parents of North Clarendon; three brothers, Rex Corey of Wallingford, Roy “Lucky” Corey Jr. and Bernie Corey, both of Clarendon; a sister, Sue Alexander of Clarendon; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Carol Corey.
There will be a celebration of life at the Red Moon Saloon in Rutland Saturday from 12:30 to 5 p.m.

James J. Maranville Jr.
CHARLESTON, S.C. — James Joseph Maranville Jr., 43, died suddenly Nov. 12, 2001, of a heart attack.
He was born April 30, 1958, the son of James J. Maranville Sr. and Juanita Newell Maranville.
He lived in Rutland, Vt., as a young child and continued to summer here with relatives throughout his teenage years.
Mr. Maranville owned Blue Heron Construction Co. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and Wragg Barony Hunt Club.
Survivors include his father and stepmother, Carolyn Taylor, of Hamilton, Va.; his mother of Charleston; two sisters, Susie M. Porter and Jae Kniffin, both of Charleston; two nieces and two nephews; and aunts, uncles and cousins in Rutland.
A funeral service was held Nov. 17.

Andrew P. Gambardella Rites
The funeral service for Andrew P. Gambardella, 70, of Rutland who died Nov. 17, 2001, was held Tuesday at the Clifford Funeral Home with the Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor of St. Peter’s Church, officiating. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.
Organist was James Cassarino and vocalist was Elise Cassarino.
American Legion Post 31 provided military honors. George Zsido presented the flag to the family.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
John H. Pockette Rites
FOREST DALE — The private graveside committal service and burial for John Henry Pockette, 69, who died Nov. 15, 2001, was held Tuesday in St. Jerome’s Cemetery in East Dorset.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
Edmund J. Goodell
MANCHESTER CENTER — Edmund James Goodell, 79, died Nov. 19, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Crown Point, N.Y., the son of the Rev. Edmund and Minnie (Soules) Goodell.
He graduated from Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester.
Mr. Goodell married Thelma Norse on Aug. 21, 1943.
He worked as an electrician in the Manchester area and later for Central Vermont Public Service Corp., from which he retired.
During World War II he trained as a glider pilot.
Mr. Goodell was an avid sportsman.
Survivors include his wife of Manchester Center; two sons, Dick Goodell of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Don Goodell of Manchester Center; two daughters, Jean Fabel of Banks, Ore., and Dotti Griffith of Danby; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The service of remembrance will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester Center with Kermit Reilly officiating.

Dean J. Webster
ROCHESTER — Dean Joseph Webster, 28, passed away at his home on November 16, 2001.
He was born on July 12, 1973, in Rutland, Vermont.
He attended school in Pittsford at Lorthrop and graduated from Otter Valley Union High School.
He was employed by Commercial Piping Inc., Local 693 as a licensed journeyman and was currently out of work due to a work-related injury. He was presently enrolled in school for mechanical engineering. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, motorcycling and spending time with his dogs, Fester and Dozer.
He is survived by his father, Milon Joseph Webster and his wife, Sandra, of Proctor; his mother, Joan B. (Davis) Webster and Jim Poepoe of Florence; two brothers, Daniel Webster and Kim of Florence, and Randy Webster and Sarah of Rutland. Four sisters, Marsha Webster and Billy of Danby, Virginia (Big Mama) Root of Pittsford, Tonia Webster and Mark of Florence, and Sandy Webster and Jason of Rutland; and a very special friend, Jessica Dudley. He is also survived by five nephews, six nieces, several aunts and uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, aunt Ruth, cousin Freddie and uncle Tommy.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, November 23, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.
A reception for family and friends will follow the service at the home of Ed and Stacey Reed, 533 Pinewoods Road, Pittsford.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 12:00 noon until the time of the funeral service.
Committal services will be held at a later date.
Thomas F. Armstrong
BURLINGTON —Thomas F. Armstrong, 86, died Nov. 15, 2001, from Parkinson’s disease.
He was born Feb. 2, 1915, in Montclair, N.J., the son of Albert and Beatrice Armstrong.
He attended Yale University.
He worked as a salesman in Stamford, Conn., in the office furniture and machine business.
Mr. Armstrong enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at the start of World War II. After graduating from officer’s training school, he served as a lieutenant while a navigator on B-24 bombers in the Aleutian Islands. He flew on more than 60 combat missions, including strikes over Japan, and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery and performance of duty while under enemy fire.
He retired to Chester in 1988 with his wife, Lorraine.
He enjoyed skiing and tennis, and was a member of the 80-plus ski club, skiing until he was 82.
Survivors include two sons, Mike Armstrong of Essex Junction and Patrick Armstrong of East Haven, Conn.; two daughters, Judy Troiano of Monroe, Conn., and Carol Costanza of Athens, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, a brother and three wives, including the mother of his children, Jane Armstrong, from whom he was divorced, and his third wife, Lorraine, who died in 1999.
The funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s in Chester with burial and a small Irish party to follow the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Robert B. Stewart Sr.
SPRINGFIELD — Robert B. Stewart Sr., 65, formerly of Chester, died Nov. 19, 2001, at his home.
He was born June 1, 1936, the son of Bert and Gertrude (Picard) Stewart.
He graduated from Chester High School.
Mr. Stewart had worked at Jones & Lamson for seven years and drove tractor-trailers cross country for five years. He later worked as a machinist for Bryant Grinder and retired after 22 years of service.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Army Airborne Division.
He had been active in the St. John’s Masons and Shriners CAIRO Skimobile Unit and Eastern Star of Chester. He was past commander of the American Legion Post 67 of Chester.
Mr. Stewart played semi-pro baseball for the Chester Town Team for several years, and played in the Springfield and Chester softball leagues for several years. He coached American Legion summer baseball for two years, and enjoyed fishing. He was also an avid bowler.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Jean (Simmons) Stewart of Springfield; his mother of Charlestown, N.H.; two sons, Bruce of Florida and Robert Jr. of Chester; three daughters, Christi O’Brien of West Lebanon, N.H., Robyn Stewart of Chester and Alicia Gordon of White River Junction; two brothers, Bernard of Bellows Falls and Francis of Rockingham; a sister, Cathy Marshall of Florida; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father; and two brothers, Bert Jr. and William Stewart.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Baptist Church in Chester with the Rev. Thomas Charlton officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery in Chester.
Calling hours will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, Springfield, Mass.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home.
Mary D. DeLong
BENNINGTON — Mary D. DeLong, 83, formerly of Bennington, and more recently of Green Acres, Fla., died Nov. 20, 2001, at Wellington Regional Medical Center in Wellington, Fla., after a brief illness.
She was the wife of the late James DeLong.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
