Isabelle T. LaFayette
MIDDLEBURY — Isabelle Thompson LaFayette, 89, died Nov. 18, 2001, at Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home in Burlington.
She was born March 28, 1912, in Starksboro, the daughter of Harrison and Nellie (Douglas) Thompson.
She married Mitchell T. LaFayette in September 1931.
She was an avid gardener, seamstress and quilter.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. She was also active with RSVP.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Gremban of New York and Florida and Regina L. Burke of South Burlington; a brother, Alfred Thompson; 14 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and a son, Richard.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Peter O’Leary will be the celebrant. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. A graveside burial service will be held at the convenience of the family in Mount St. Joseph Cemetery in Bristol.

Walter G. Gropler
KILLINGTON — Walter George Gropler, 72, died Nov. 9, 2001, at his home.
He was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Flushing N.Y., the son of Walter and Elise Rapp Gropler.
He graduated from St. Lawrence University and did graduate work at Columbia University.
Mr. Gropler was a sales representative for Matheson Gas Products and later became sales manager of Matheson Instruments in Horsham, Pa. After retiring to Killington, he worked as a hiking guide for Killington Ski Area and as a photographer for Reflections of Killington.
He was a volunteer with the Explorer Scouts in Suffern, N.Y.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Welsh Gropler; two nephews and a niece; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
A celebration of his life will be held next summer.
Thomas J. Corey
SHREWSBURY — Thomas J. Corey, 48, died Nov. 19, 2001, at his home after a long illness.
Arrangements are pending at the Aldous Funeral Home.
Arthur E. Hempel
COSSAYUNA, N.Y. — Arthur E. Hempel, 76, died Nov. 16, 2001, at Glens Falls Hospital after a heart attack.
He was born July 26, 1925, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Arthur and Jenny (Beasue) Hempel Fern.
He married Irene (Frappier) Hempel on Dec. 30, 1944.
Mr. Hempel worked as a carpenter for Fort Miller Co. He had previously worked for the Sheldon brothers on Woody Hill Farm, for Steve Sheldon in Hebron, Fox Fabrication in Hudson Falls and construction with his son’s business, Castle Enterprises.
He enjoyed taking care of Cossayuna Cemetery and was recently awarded a plaque for 20 years of service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include his wife of Cossayuna; two sons, Arthur Hempel of Salem and James Hempel of Cossayuna; two daughters, Theresa Hempel of Summit Lake and Julie Hempel of Belcher; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Hempel of Pittsford, Vt.; two sisters, Viola Whitmen of Rutland, Vt., and Joyce Baker of New Hampshire; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two sons, John Hempel and Edward Hempel.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Lakeville Baptist Church in Cossayuna with the Rev. Sandra Spaulding, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Cossayuna Cemetery, head of the lake, Cossayuna.
Arrangements are under the direction of the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home in Argyle.
Jennie V. Needham Rites
BRANDON — The private graveside committal service and burial for Jennie VanNess Needham, 91, who died Nov. 15, 2001, was held Monday in Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon with the Rev. K. Bevan, pastor of Brandon United Methodist Church, officiating. The memorial service followed at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Brandon Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 232, Brandon.

John H. Pockette Rites
FOREST DALE — The funeral Mass for John Henry Pockette, 69, who died Nov. 15, 2001, was celebrated Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon with the Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz, pastor, officiating. A private graveside committal service and burial will take place today in St. Jerome’s Cemetery in East Dorset.
Organist and soloist was Stu James.
Eulogy was given by a son, Frederick Pockette.
Members of Brandon American Legion Post 55 provided military honors. Chaplain Dudley Berry presented the flag to the family assisted by Sgt. at Arms Richard Howland.
Pallbearers were Michael Pockette of Proctor, Alfred Pockette of Salisbury, Raymond Counter of Goshen, Broc Stevens and Eric Robinson, both of Brandon; and Robert Pockette of Chittenden.
The family received friends at the church parish hall for a time of fellowship and reflection after the Mass.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
Frederick C. Degener Sr.
CAVENDISH — Frederick C. Degener Sr., 88, died Nov. 18, 2001, at Springfield Hospital.
He was born May 28, 1913, in the Bronx, N.Y., the son of Charles and Margaret (Rodermish).
He attended schools in New York.
He was employed by Railway Express Agency in New York City for 44 years, retiring in 1973. He moved to Cavendish in 1973 and worked for Cummings Hardware in Chester Depot for more than 30 years.
Mr. Degener was a communicant at Holy Name of Mary Church in Proctorsville and served on the parish council. He was active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Cavendish and Ludlow and worked on the America Reads Program helping children to read. He was also a ticket taker at the Antique show in Ludlow for the last six years. He had been active in the Boy Scouts while living in New Jersey.
He enjoyed working with stained glass and made mobiles, which were sold locally in the Cummings Hardware store. He also produced decorative wax candles.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Gladys of Cavendish; a son, Frederick Degener Jr. of Chester; and two grandchildren.
The memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Holy Name of Mary Church in Proctorsville.
All other services are private.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Adams & Kenney Funeral Home in Chester.
Edward E. Willey
HARTFORD — Edward E. Willey, 54, died Nov. 15, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born Sept. 20, 1947, in St. Albans, the son of Edward and Lillian (Trombley) Willey.
He attended school in St. Albans.
Mr. Willey married Janet Farnsworth on March 4, 1972, in White River Junction.
He worked in the chicken plant in South Royalton and later at the Green Mountain Box Co. in White River Junction. He had also worked for Asplundh Tree Co., retiring in 1985 due to a disability.
He was a member of the Hartford Rod and Gun Club.
Mr. Willey enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He also enjoyed playing cards and cooking.
Survivors include his wife of Hartford; three daughters, Stacey Willey of Summerville, S.C., Samantha Boyce of Hartford and Crystal Washburn of East Bethel; a brother, Richard Willey of St. Augustine, Fla.; three sisters, Maggie Dudley of Hartland, Carol Druge of Hartford and Lucy Baker of Sharon; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Priscilla Coffin
BENNINGTON — Priscilla Coffin, 61, died Nov. 19, 2001, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation where she had resided for the last 16 years.
She was born May 20, 1940, in Cold Spring, N.Y., the daughter of Edwin and Mae (Gaudette) Coffin.
She enjoyed music and special activities at the nursing home.
Survivors include two sisters, Joanne Green of Bennington and Marjorie (Wright) Stephenson of Middlebury; a brother, Robert Wright of Brattleboro; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private graveside committal service will be held in Park Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Cass Gilbert officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

Edmund J. Goodell
MANCHESTER — Edmund J. Goodell, 79, died Nov. 19, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
Arrangements are pending at the Brewster Funeral Service in Manchester Center.
Wallace E. Coyle
SPRINGFIELD — Wallace E. Coyle, 78, died Nov. 18, 2001, at Springfield Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 14, 1923, in Saxtons River, the son of Robert and Bernice (Baldwin) Coyle.
He attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School in 1942.
He married Doris LaRue on Feb. 23, 1952, in Springfield.
Mr. Coyle was employed at Parks & Woolson Machine Tool Co. for 45 years, retiring in 1992.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church and a life member of the Robert L. Johnson Post 771 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also was a member of the National Rifle Association and National Audubon Society.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling, and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
Survivors include a daughter, Cathy Shattuck of Sheridan, Wyo.; two sons, Bradford Coyle and Brian Coyle, both of Springfield; his former wife, Doris of Springfield; a sister, Carleen Hart of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Robert Coyle of Athol, Mass., and Ronald Coyle of San Antonio, Texas; his companion, Irene Jackson of Springfield; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Wilson Coyle in 1962.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Nelson, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery with full military honors.
Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
