Melissa F. Walton Rites

BRANDON — The funeral service for Melissa Florence Walton, 17, who died Nov. 14, 2001, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, was held Saturday at the Brandon Congregational Church.

The Rev. Richard White, pastor, officiated. A graveside committal service and burial followed at Pine Hill Cemetery.

Pianist was Kim Nelson of Brandon.

A cousin, Kylee Keith, shared remembrances.

Bearers were Roy Cook of Sudbury, Jeb Cook of Nantucket, Mass., Derrick Walton and Tommy Weedon, both of Brandon, Jake Preseau of Sudbury, Brad Kiphaut of Chittenden, Jesse Keith of Pittsford and Stephen Knott of Atlantic Highlands, N.J.

The Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon was in charge of arrangements.

Richard M. Davine

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Richard Michael Davine, 77, of North Adams died Nov. 17, 2001, at North Adams Regional Hospital.

He was born in Rutland, Vt., Dec. 17, 1923, the son of Robert and Mary (Clifford) Davine. He was a 1943 graduate of Rutland High School.

He married Barbara Eldridge on Aug. 16, 1944.

He moved to North Adams in 1950.

He was employed for 38 years at the former Sprague Electric Co of North Adams. He retired in 1985. He also worked part time for 30 years at the Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal, Vt., and for several years part time at the former Fishlein’s Market in North Adams.

In the 1960s he served as chairman of Mayor Louis Diamond’s mayoral campaign and later served on the North Adams Planning Board during Mayor Diamond’s tenure.

He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church in North Adams and a member of the Sprague Electric Co. Quarter-Century Club.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Michael E. Davine and Terry R. Davine, both of North Adams; two daughters, Diana L. Davine of Lanesboro, Mass., and Adriene A. Davine of North Adams; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Robert Davine, James Davine, John Davine and Joseph Davine.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Auge-San Soucie-Simmons Funeral Home in North Adams. Burial will be private.

Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Northern Berkshire United Way through the Auge-San Soucie-Simmons Funeral Home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, Mass., 01247.

John McCaffrey Rites

A funeral Mass for John “Jack” McCaffrey, 69, who died Nov. 11, 2001, in Rutland, was celebrated Saturday in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. The Rev. James McShane, pastor, officiated.

Vocalist was Lori Routhier. Organist was Richard Brown.

Readers were the Rev. Eric May, pastor of Ira Baptist Church, and Ken McCaffrey.

The Clifford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Frederick C. Degener Sr.

CAVENDISH — Frederick C. Degener Sr., 88, died Nov. 18, 2001, at Springfield Hospital.

Arrangements are pending with Adams & Kenney Funeral Home in Chester.

Karen L. Cross Rites

SPRINGFIELD — A funeral service for Karen L. Cross, 36, who died Nov. 9, 2001, was held Saturday in the First Congregational Church in Springfield. The Rev. William Nelson, pastor, officiated. Burial followed in the Oakland Cemetery.

Organist was Candace Montesi.

Bearers were Kevin Cross of Montpelier, George Wright of Chesterfield, N.H., and Gary Blodgett and Roger Scully, both of Ludlow.

The Davis Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond P. Zigman Rites

PERKINSVILLE — A graveside funeral service for Raymond P. Zigman, 79, who died Nov. 11, 2001, was held Saturday in the Grout Cemetery in Perkinsville with the Rev. Harry L. Peatt, pastor of the Perkinsville Community Church, officiating.

A memorial Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor followed the graveside service, with the Rev. Paul Belhumeur, pastor, officiating. Organist was Gerald Grimo.

The Davis Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Walter J. Comstock III

SPRINGFIELD — Walter Jabez Comstock III, 70, formerly of Athens, died Nov. 17, 2001, at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend.

Mr. Comstock was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Essex, Conn., the son of Walter J. II and Elizabeth I. (Bannister) Comstock.

He attended schools in Essex and Deep River, Conn.

He owned and operated the Benner & Comstock Hardware Lumber Store and Contracting in Chester until the early 1970s. Following the sale of the business to his partner, he became self-employed as a contractor in the Athens, area, retiring in 1990.

He married Doris Heidtmann on June 13, 1953 in East Hadlyme, Conn. She died in 1986. He married Lillian T. Guidi Comstock on Oct. 10, 1986, in Essex, Conn.

He was a life member of King Solomon Temple Lodge of Bellows Falls and the Bellows Falls Elks Club. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He served as assistant coach for American Legion Post 37 baseball team and helped transport the players to games for many years.

He was a former member of the Precision Valley Square Dancers.

He was a volunteer fireman, a selectman for many years and a former trustee of the Christian Community Church, all in Athens.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Wendy L. Comstock of Bellows Falls, Doreen C. Hobson of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Jean Crum of Saxtons River; two sons, Jeffrey A. Comstock of Saxtons River and Kirk O. Comstock of Bellows Falls; two brothers, Robert and Richard Comstock of Old Lyme, Conn.; three sisters, Elizabeth West of Westbrook, Conn., Nancy Desnoyers of Chester, Conn., and Sally LeClair of Old Lyme, Conn.; five stepchildren, Glen Guidi of Hadlyme, Conn., Joseph Guidi of Deep River, Conn., Paula Merrow of Middletown, Conn., John Guidi of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Gina Sopneski of Deep River, Conn., and 13 grandchildren.

The funeral service will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Grace Cottage Hospital, in care of Drs. Robert Backus and Moss Linder, Townshend, 05353.

The Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Anne Stokes

NORTH SPRINGFIELD — Anne Stokes, 72, died Nov. 17, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., following a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 26, 1929, in Springfield, the daughter of Peter and Stephanie (Klimenok) Shinkavich. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1946.

She was employed at Jones and Lamson Machine Tool Co. for several years. She married Edward H. Stokes on Oct. 27, 1951.

She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She was an avid bowler, participating in several leagues at the Plaza Bowl over many years.

Her enjoyed gardening and canning.

Survivors include her husband of North Springfield; a son, Douglas E. Stokes of North Springfield; a sister, Tiny Alger of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Nina Berg.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Thomas W. Hiltsley, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Davis Chapel on Tuesday morning one hour before the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Betty M. Vince

RANDOLPH — Betty M. Vince, 85, died Nov. 17, 2001, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.

She was born in Bennington, Nov. 13, 1916, the daughter of Joseph and Lillian (Sweet) Coyne.

She married Michael J. Vince Aug. 31, 1940. He died in 1991.

She was a resident of the Mayo Nursing Home in Northfield.

She was a member of the St. Donatian and Rogatian Catholic Church in Randolph.

She was the Sears and Roebuck Store manager in Bennington for many years. She retired in 1978.

She enjoyed swimming and collecting ceramic dogs.

Survivors include a son, Joseph Vince of Randolph; a sister, Evelyn Cooperman of Plantsville, Conn.; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild. She was predeceased by a sister, Thelma Wright.

A memorial Mass will be held at the St. Donatian and Rogatian Catholic Church in Randolph Nov. 26 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John Milanese officiating.

There are no calling hours. Burial will be Nov. 27 at the Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.

The Day Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Collins R. Parker

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Collins R. Parker, 71, of Vero Beach died Nov. 15, 2001, at Royal Palm Convalescent Center, following an extended illness.

Mr. Parker was born May 6, 1930, in Boston. He moved to Vero Beach a year ago from West Windsor, Vt.

He worked for the New England Telephone Co. on Cape Cod for 10 years. Before his retirement, he was director of skiing at Ascutney Mountain Resort in West Windsor. He was also a director of the Green Mountain Horse Association in South Woodstock.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean War.

He was an amateur radio operator.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Helena; a son, Roy DeCesare of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; a daughter, Sally Parker Gottling of Sunapee, N.H.; a brother, Rienzi B. Parker Jr. of Weston, Mass., and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

The Cox-Gifford Funeral Home in Sebastian is in charge of arrangements.

Mary G. Neri

MIDDLEBURY — Mary “Mama” Giunta Neri died Nov. 17, 2001, at Porter Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 31, 1911, in Greenwich Village in New York City, the daughter of Cosmo and Teresa Giunta.

She was educated in New York City and Greenwich, Conn.

She married Anthony P. Neri July 7, 1927, in Greenwich.

During World War II she worked on the Going Away Committee, distributing prayer books and other items to departing soldiers. She was active in the community, in politics and in the church in Connecticut.

She owned and operated Park Lunch in Port Chester, N.Y., and worked in interior decorating and fashion consulting before moving to Vermont. She and her husband purchased Marianna Farm in New Haven in 1955 and moved to Middlebury in 1972. Mrs. Neri operated Tony’s Pizza in Middlebury from 1972 to 1981 and Mama’s Pizza/Restaurant from 1981 to 1986. She continued to be actively involved in her son’s restaurant, Paisano’s, as well as cooking daily for Middlebury Vending & Catering, and she continued preparing food until the time of her death.

She enjoyed hockey, dancing, cooking and entertaining.

Survivors include her son, Anthony Neri ; two grandsons; a niece and a nephew. She was predeceased by her daughter, Angela; her brother, Salvatore Giunta; and her sister, Grace Giunta La Cava.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Friends may call at Sanderson Funeral Service today from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Porter Medical Center, Porter Drive, Middlebury, 05753.
