Gladys S. Flanders
The memorial service for Gladys Spafford Flanders, 93, of Rutland who died Oct. 26, 2001, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Rutland. A private burial will follow at a later date in East Clarendon Cemetery.

Theresa H. Foster Rites>]
A funeral Mass for Theresa H. Foster, 61, who died Oct. 28, 2001, was held Wednesday at St. Peter’s Church with the Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor, officiating.
Organist was Paul Opel and vocalist was Helen Davidson.
Bearers were George Foster III, Adam Yoder and Alan Marchinkowski, all of Rutland, Gordon Dimick of Clarendon, William Parker of Ira, Shawn Marchinkowski of Proctor, Kenneth Troumbley of Pownal and Matthew Foster of Clarendon.
Mrs. Foster was a member of St. Peter Church.
She operated a booth at the Vermont State Fair and enjoyed playing bingo.
She was predeceased by Elizabeth Marchinkowski who raised her.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
Agnes M. Allard Rites
PROCTOR — The funeral Mass for Agnes M. Allard, 95, who died Oct. 29, 2001, was held Wednesday at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Proctor with the Rev. Raymond Walsh as celebrant. Burial followed in South Street Cemetery in Proctor.
Organist was Margaret Curtis and soloist was Robert Harger.
Bearers were Todd Allard, Bill Allard, Mike McCarthy, Larry Courcelle, Richard Courcelle and William Lundrigan.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.
Thomas J. Lisby
BENNINGTON — Thomas James Lisby, 82, died Oct. 29, 2001, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born June 27, 1919, in Bennington, the son of Paul and Elizabeth (Litster) Lisby.
He received his education in Bennington and graduated from the former Bennington High School in 1938.
He married Joyce Greene on July 20, 1946, at First Presbyterian Church in Glens Falls, N.Y.
Mr. Lisby had worked for Miss Eddy at her estate in Old Bennington, and as a machine operator at Bijur Lubricating Co. for several years, retiring in 1982.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and had served in North Africa, Italy, southern France, the Battle of the Bulge and into occupied Germany.
He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 13 of Bennington, a member of the American Legion in Glens Falls, N.Y., a member and former Tyler of Mount Anthony Lodge, F&AM of Bennington and a charter member of First Amendment Task Force of the National Rifle Association.
Mr. Lisby enjoyed traveling, downhill skiing, hiking, biking and deer hunting.
Survivors include his wife of Bennington.
He was predeceased by a son, Thomas J. Lisby, in 1974.
Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 13 will provide military honors at the graveside service Saturday at 10 a.m. in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home. Masonic funeral rites will be conducted Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home by members of Mount Anthony Lodge.

Hazel S. Pelkey
CHESTER — Hazel S. Pelkey, 81, died Oct. 27, 2001, at Springfield Hospital after a long illness.
She was born April 20, 1920, in Proctorsville, the daughter of Horace Spaulding and Carrie (Phillips) Robinson.
Mrs. Pelkey was a homemaker. She also worked in local woolen mills and as a waitress at Proctorsville Inn and Danny’s Spaghetti House.
She enjoyed crocheting, yard sales and cooking.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Manley of Springfield, Connie Fontaine of Mendon and Patricia Smith of Chester; three sons, Robert Pelkey and Timothy Palmer of Chester, and Barry Palmer of Ohio; a brother, H. Sidney Spaulding of South Londonderry; a sister, Laura Place of Lebanon, N.H.; 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Pelkey in July 2001; by a son, Michael J. Pelkey; by an infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Pelkey; by a sister, Georgieanna Bourne; and by two brothers, Clifton (Peanie) and Allen Spaulding who died in World War II in Italy.
The graveside service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Baptist Church Cemetery in Chester.
Richard D. Dawson
SPRINGFIELD — Richard D. Dawson, 51, died Oct. 30, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born May 15, 1950, in Hartford, Conn., the son of John and Anne (Incorvati) Dawson Sr.
He graduated from Farmington (Conn.) High School.
Mr. Dawson worked in the automobile business for more than 30 years, and for the past few years had been employed at Springfield High School as a special education aide.
He enjoyed snowmobiling.
Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Liza (Parsons) Dawson of Springfield; two sons, Lucas Dawson of Los Angeles, Calif., and Brian Dawson of Louisville, Colo.; two brothers, twin brother Lionel Dawson of Springfield and John Dawson Jr. of Burlington, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Springfield with the Rev. William Nelson, pastor, officiating.
A reception will follow the service at the Masonic Temple.
There will be no calling hours.

Vivian K. Hill
ROCHESTER — Vivian Kidder Hill, 76, died Tuesday, October 30, 2001, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
She was born in Rochester, Vermont, January 8, 1925, the daughter of Edgar and Elma (Severy) Kidder.
She was educated in Rochester schools and graduated from Rochester High School and Rutland Business College.
She married Fayette A. Hill, November 17, 1944, in Rutland, Vermont.
She worked for the hot lunch program in the Rochester school, for Oat Meal Studios and the Market Basket, all of Rochester.
She was an active member of the Church Blood Drawings, was one of the first members of the Rochester Rescue Squad and was a volunteer with the Randolph Area Hospice. Her memberships included the Rochester Federated Church and the Hope Chapter Order of Eastern Star 50 of Rochester.
Her interests included reading, traveling, crossword puzzles, playing the piano, cribbage and being with her grandchildren.
She leaves her husband of Rochester; a son, Lynn Hill of Proctor, Vt.; three daughters, Marcia Hill of Monks Corner, South Carolina, Gay DeLuca of Wilmington, North Carolina and Paula Boshart of Hyde Park, N.Y.; a brother, Alan Kidder of Rochester; a sister, Betty McCormack of Rochester; a special granddaughter, Kristy DeCoff of Rochester; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Rochester Friday, November 2, 2001, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bill Daniels of the Rochester Federated Church officiating.
There are no calling hours.

James W. Devens
BRATTLEBORO — James Walter Devens, 81, died Oct. 30, 2001, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
He was born July 12, 1920, in Utica, N.Y., the son of Frederick and Alice (Lozer) Devens.
He was educated in Dover, N.J., where he lived before moving to Brattleboro.
Mr. Devens married Stacia Wrobel on Oct. 28, 1975, in Elkton, Md.
He was self-employed as a heavy equipment mechanic, owning his own company in Dover for many years. He worked for Winchester Salvage Co. and as a cook at Stacia’s Family Diner, which was owned by his wife.
Mr. Devens served in the Merchant Marines for nine years.
He attended services at Faith Ministries.
He enjoyed rebuilding antique cars, gardening and cooking, and was known for his lasagna.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Stephen Devens and Frederick Devens, both of Florida; a brother, Herbert Devens of Florida; a sister, Ruth White of Hilltop, Pa.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Paul Devens and Alex Devens.
The graveside committal service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Walter White of Faith Ministries officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

Marie L. Furman
WINDSOR — Marie L. Furman, 84, died Oct. 30, 2001, at Mount Ascutney Hospital & Health Center in Windsor.
She was born April 4, 1917, in Rockland, Mass., the daughter of Frederick and Nora (Cadogan) Lawrence.
She attended school in Ludlow.
She married Lee Furman on May 2, 1935, in Ludlow, and later moved to Windsor. He died in 1976.
Mrs. Furman was employed at First National Store Warehouse in Boston, Mass., and later operated Furman’s Market in Windsor for 12 years. She worked as a cook at Mount Ascutney Hospital & Health Center in Windsor for nearly 20 years.
She enjoyed playing bingo, cards and dancing.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Furman of Windsor and Leroy Furman of Essex Junction; three brothers, Robert Lawrence of Florida, Frederick Lawrence of Barre and Richard Lawrence of Hartford; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held Saturday, May 18, 2002, at 11 a.m. in Brownsville Cemetery in West Windsor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Ascutney Hospital & Health Center, 289 County Road, Windsor, 05089.

Norman Crowninshield
BRATTLEBORO — The graveside committal service with full military honors for Norman Crowninshield will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Pleasant View Cemetery, Route 30, in Jamaica with the Rev. Robin Lunn, pastor of Jamaica Community Church, officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.
John A. Hale Rites
BENNINGTON — The funeral service for John A. Hale who died Oct. 26, 2001, was held Tuesday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Deborah Trolenberg, pastor of Shaftsbury United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Mettowee Cemetery in Granville, N.Y.
Bearers were Howard Gabert, Wayne Goddard, Daniel Blackmer, Charles Hurley, Donald “Tiger” Bourn and Terry Senecal.
A reception was held at the home of Nina Bourn after the service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
