Erick R. Ericksen
ARLINGTON — Erick R. Ericksen, 82, died Oct. 22, 2001, at Albany Medical Center in Albany, N.Y.
He was born July 2, 1919, in Ridgefield Park, N.J., the son of Frank and Emma (Johnson) Ericksen.
He attended schools in Ridgefield and graduated from high school there.
Mr. Ericksen married Barbara Stroffoleno on July 3, 1947, in North Bennington.
He had been employed by Mack Molding Co. for 44 years, starting at their plant in Wayne, N.J., and relocating to Arlington, where he had been molding manager and plant manager. He retired in 1981.
He joined the National Guard in 1938, and later served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific.
Mr. Ericksen was a member and past post commander of American Legion Post 69 of Arlington.
He enjoyed boat building, antique car restoration, raising Morgan horses and going for deer-spotting rides. He also enjoyed baseball and was an avid Mets fan.
Survivors include his wife of Arlington; a son, Edward Ericksen of West Arlington; a daughter, Sherry Ericksen of Bennington; a brother, Phil Ericksen of Sussasunna, N.J.; three grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Edward Ericksen; and a sister, Agnes Parkhurst.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Federated Church of East Arlington with the Rev. Joan N. O’Gorman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in West Arlington Cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Arlington.

Lewis F. Slade
SOUTH LONDONDERRY — Lewis Franklin Slade, 81, died Oct. 22, 2001, at home after a long illness.
He was born Dec. 30, 1919, in Londonderry, the son of Franklin and Beatrice (Carley) Slade.
He received his education in local schools.
He married Angeline Hodgin on May 4, 1949, in Peru.
Mr. Slade taught blacksmithing and was taught to be a farrier by his father, working in southern Vermont for many years. He had also been a logger and worked in the construction trades.
He had served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II in the European Theatre and Africa, and was awarded the Bronze Star.
Mr. Slade was a member of the South Londonderry Baptist Church, American Legion Post in Londonderry, Odd Fellows Club in South Londonderry and Champion Fire Company 5 of South Londonderry. He had served as town constable and lister.
He was an avid outdoorsman.
Survivors include three daughters, Gloria Wilkins of South Londonderry, Eileen “Midge” Kimball of Kissimee, Fla., and Karen Renn of Sharon; two sons, Terrance Slade of South Londonderry and Henry Slade of Vernon; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a niece and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Harry Slade, in 1938; and a nephew.
The memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at South Londonderry Baptist Church with the Rev. Malcolm Hamblett, pastor, officiating. Eulogy will be offered by Kermit Riley. Burial will follow, and a time of refreshment will follow the committal service.
Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewster Funeral Service in Manchester Center.

Gertrude S. Atwood
HARTLAND — The graveside service for Gertrude Soule Atwood, 81, who died May 25, 2001, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Riverside Cemetery in Woodstock.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.
Pietje C. Garrett
RICHMOND — Pietje “Pia” Catharina Garrett, 49, died Oct. 18, 2001, at home after a two-year battle with brain cancer.
She was born Oct. 24, 2001, in Bussum, the Netherlands, the daughter of Johannes Vlieger and Gerritje Walinga.
She attended school in Bussum and graduated from high school in 1969. She spent the 1969-70 school year in Monett, Mo., as an AFS foreign exchange student. She returned to the Netherlands and graduated from secretarial school. After moving to Vermont, she graduated from the University of Vermont’s physical therapy program in Burlington in 1984.
She married Paul Garrett on Feb. 21, 1975, in Monett, and then moved to Springfield, Vt.
Mrs. Garrett worked as an international secretary at Phonogram, a Dutch record company in the Netherlands, and later at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire as secretary to Professor William Smith for several years. She also worked in Martinsburg, W.Va., as a therapist for several months and at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont.
She was active in the Vermont Physical Therapy Association, serving as secretary and delegate to the national APTA convention.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Johannes; and a daughter, Gerlisa, all of Richmond; her mother of Assen, the Netherlands; three brothers, Theun of Assen, Bert of Roosendaal, the Netherlands and Leendert of Amsterdam; an aunt; her American family with whom she lived while a foreign exchange student, Arno and Esther Kleiboeker and children of Missouri; and 13 nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Richmond Congregational Church. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery in Richmond.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ready Funeral Home Mountain View Chapel in Essex Junction.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to VNA, your local AFS Chapter or Richmond Free Library.

Gerhardt H. Daden Rites
SUNDERLAND — The funeral Mass for Gerhardt Horst Daden, 75, who died Oct. 16, 2001, was held Saturday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington with the Rev. Robert Loczynski, CSC, pastor, officiating. Burial was held Monday in Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland with the Rev. Vincent Coppola, CSC, associate pastor of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, offering the committal prayers.
Ministers of the altar were Val Clifford and Charles Gould.
Readers were grandsons, Jessie and Jeremy, and his daughter, Cheryl.
Eulogy and words of remembrance were offered by Mr. Daden’s daughter, Heidi, and granddaughter, Haley.
The Harned Fowler Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Manchester provided military honors. Commander Thomas Keyes presented the flag to Mr. Daden’s son, Gary.
Pallbearers were Mr. Daden’s son, Gary, sons-in-law, Jamie Farrar, Bob Mowell, Dan Mahoney and Jim Brown and grandsons, Colbey Daden, Jeremy Mahoney and Jessie Farrar.
A prayer service preceded the Mass at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.
The evening prayer service was offered Friday at the funeral home by the Rev. Coppola.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.
Walter J. Dubanevich Rites
SPRINGFIELD — The funeral Mass for Walter J. Dubanevich, 79, who died Oct. 18, 2001, was held Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield with the Rev. Joseph Ramano, pastor, officiating.
Organist was Rafal Nowak who accompanied the Rejoice Choir. Canter and soloist was Stan Smith.
Reader was Mary Harriman.
Bearers were Anthony Dubanevich, Dennis Pine and Elizabeth Pine, all of Springfield, Denise Pine of East Boston, Mass., Dennis Dubanevich of Claremont, N.H., and Gerald Coleman of Peabody, Mass.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
Mildred G. Crowley
Mildred G. Crowley, a long-time high school business education teacher in the Rutland area, died at Eden Park Nursing Home on Tuesday evening, October 30, 2001.
She was born at home on the Castleton Road in the town of West Rutland on February 23, 1902, the daughter of Edward R. and Philomen (Robidue) Gilfeather.
Mildred grew up on her family’s dairy farm and was always willing to relate to her children and grandchildren her happy memories of helping her family tend the herd of Jersey cows and other farm animals during those years. She was a wonderful source of information on what it was like to grow up on a family farm in Vermont at the turn of the 20th century.
She graduated from West Rutland High School and Bay Path Institute, where she majored in business and business education. Through the years, she continued her education at Castleton State College, St. Michael’s College and UVM.
She began her teaching career at West Rutland High School and taught there until she married Arthur E. Crowley in 1927 and moved to Rutland. She later resumed teaching at Pittsford and Proctor High Schools. After many years as a business teacher at Rutland High School, she retired in 1967.
During her entire business teaching career, she devoted most of her time and energy before, during and after classes to teaching, training, mentoring and encouraging those students who would go directly from high school graduation to the workplace. The degree of her success can be measured by the many calls and letters of gratitude she received from former students and local employers upon her retirement.
Mrs. Crowley served as auditor of the Vermont Education Association. She was a member of the Rutland Teachers Association, Business Teachers Association, Classroom Teachers Association, and Business Teachers Conference. She also served as a member of many high school accreditation teams throughout Vermont.
After her retirement, she taught adult education classes in Rutland and several summer courses at Castleton State College. Later, she took great pleasure in traveling in Europe and the United States with her husband.
Arthur E. Crowley, a long-time Rutland alderman, died in 1973 and she began spending part of the following years in Florida. In 1982 she married John Kovarik of Omaha, Nebraska, and lived in Florida until Mr. Kovarik died in 1995, when she returned to Rutland to be with her family.
Mildred was also predeceased by all of her brothers and sisters, by her beloved son, Phillip, who died May 29, 2000 and her beloved daughter-in-law, Pauline R. Crowley, who died July 24, 1994.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Crowley Regan of Spring Hill, Florida and Killington; and her sons, Peter A. Crowley of West Palm Beach, Florida; Michael M. Crowley of Gunnison, Colorado and Tucson, Arizona; John P. Crowley of West Rutland; Arthur E. Crowley Jr. of Rutland; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a stepson, Thomas Kovarik of West Palm Beach, Florida.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Catherine R. Densmore
CLAREMONT, N.H. — Catherine R. Densmore, 100, died Oct. 30, 2001, at Mount Ascutney Hospital in Windsor, Vt., after a brief period of failing health.
She was born Catherine Kelley Rainville on May 8, 1901, in Rutland, Vt., the daughter of Arthur and Johanna (Kelley) Rainville.
She graduated from Rutland High School in 1919. She also graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in Rutland in 1921 with a teaching degree in music.
She married Alfred J. Densmore of Claremont on Nov. 22, 1930, at St. Peter’s Church. He died in 1939.
Mrs. Densmore had been employed by the Rutland (Wholesale) Grocery Co., and was an active partner in the C.E. Densmore & Son Wholesale Grocery Company of Claremont. She also cared for her aging parents in Rutland for eight years.
She participated in various musical activities in Rutland and enjoyed working on a family genealogy.
Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Robert Densmore of Manchester and Richard Densmore of Claremont; and many cousins in Rutland.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Claremont. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Stringer Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Mary’s Church, 32 Pearl St., Claremont, 03743, or to a favorite charity.

John W. Hoag
SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. — John W. Hoag, 77, formerly of Hatboro, Pa., and Rutland, Vt., died Oct. 30, 2001.
He was born June 23, 1924, in Rutland.
Mr. Hoag was employed as an electrical engineer at Honeywell for 40 years, and also worked for Icotron and Automatic Technologies.
He was a U.S. Army prisoner of war during World War II.
Mr. Hoag was a member of the 106th Infantry Division Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Violet (Andy) Hoag; two daughters, Suzanne Hathcock of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Rebecca Bowman of Arlington, Va.; two sons, Douglass Hoag of Collegeville, Pa., and James Hoag of Monmouth, Ore.; and a sister, Joann Leon of Hendersonville, N.C.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel, 13738 Camino del Sol, Sun City West.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
