SPRINGFIELD — Henry B. Chase, 84, died Oct. 17, 2001, at Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

Judith Parker
WESTMINSTER — The memorial service for Judith Parker, who died Oct. 8, 2001, will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Westminster Congregational Church with the Rev. Pete Hults officiating.

Griffith M. Jones
Griffith Morris “Sonny” Jones, 65, of Rutland died Oct. 16, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
He was born March 20, 1936, in Rutland, the son of Hugh and Dora (Jones).
He was employed as a bus driver for Marble Valley Transit Authority in Rutland for 15 years, retiring in 1991.
Mr. Jones was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, re-enlisting for a second tour of duty.
He was a former member of the Marine Corps League of Rutland and was instrumental in establishing the Toys for Tots program for the Marine Corps League. He was also a former member of American Legion Post 31 of Rutland, American Legion Post 49 of Fair Haven and Royal Order of Moose Lodge 1122 of Rutland.
Survivors include three sons, William Jones and Richard Jones, both of Rutland, and Kenneth Jones of Proctor; a granddaughter and grandson; and his former wife, Joy (Langdon) Jones of Rutland.
The graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fair Haven.
Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.
Memorial contributions may be made to Marine Corps League Toys for Kids Program through the funeral home office, P.O. Box 86, Fair Haven, 05743.

Irene W. Hostler
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Irene Whitney Hostler died at age 90 on Tuesday, October, 16, 2001, at the Culpeper Regional Hospital.
Irene Hostler was born July 24, 1911, in Springfield, Vermont. She graduated from Springfield High School, was an acting member of the Jenny Lund Theatre Group and named Miss Vermont. She married John Gerald Hostler on January 11, 1939. They resided in Rutland, Vermont until his death in 1952.
Irene Whitney Hostler was recognized over her lifetime for her creativity with flowers, crafts (Christmas ornaments her specialty) and food. She won the National Sandwich-making Contest in 1972 in a televised cook-off with professional chefs in New York City. After her retirement in 1979 as the cafeteria director of the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, she moved to Charlottesville. She continued to bake for family and neighbors and remained an avid reader and crossword fiend until her death.
The deceased is survived by a daughter, Sharon L. Hostler, and son-in-law, Joseph Boardman of Charlottesville; a granddaughter, Kathleen A. Dimock; and partner, Deborah A. Rutter of Seattle, Wash.; a grandson, Dylan A. Dimock and wife Julie A. Blackwood of Wilmington, N.C.; and a cousin, Thelma Mitchell of Edenton, N.C. Additional family members include Gioia L. Dimock of Alexandria, Va.; Dorothy, Sarah and Richard McNamara of Cape Cod, Mass.; and Stephen, Skyla, Darby, Phoebe and Kate Hendricks of Vienna, Va.
The family expresses gratitude to the friends and neighbors who contributed to the high quality of Irene Whitney Hostler’s life over the last year of illness; the physicians (Dr. Christine DiVincentis and Dr. John Schildwachter of Charlottesville, Dr. Thomas Reynolds and Dr. Mortimer Chiles of Culpeper) whose medical expertise and humanism supported her choices for independence; and the therapists and nurses (Culpeper Healthcare Facility and Culpeper Regional Hospital) whose compassion and competence provided her dignity of spirit.
The life of Irene Whitney Hostler will be celebrated at a memorial service on December 23, 2001. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in memory of the deceased to the Children’s Medical Center or the Hospice Program at the University of Virginia.

CLARENDON — Anne McTeigue, 74, died Oct. 17, 2001, at her home.

Wayne N. Derry
WILLISTON — Wayne Nathan Derry, 57, died Oct. 17, 2001, at home.
He was born Oct. 10, 1944, in Burlington, the son of James and Phyllis (Seymour) Derry.
He had worked as a welder in the Burlington area for more than 25 years.
Mr. Derry was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and an Earnhart fan.
Survivors include his mother, Phyllis Decker of Burlington; two daughters, Lisa Derry of Burlington and Tina Derry of Georgia, Vt.; his second family, Barbara Wells of Winooski and her children; his former wife, Ann Barnes of Rutland; a brother, James “Sonny” Derry of Rutland; seven grandchildren; two nieces, several great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by his father and his stepfather.
The memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Home in Burlington.
Friends may call Saturday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

FAIR HAVEN — The funeral Mass for Edward T. Carvey Sr., 90, who died Oct. 14, 2001, will be celebrated today at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fair Haven with the Rev. Richard Tinney, parish priest, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Carvey’s Family Restaurant on Route 4A in Fair Haven following the burial.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home.
Robert D. Mayo Rites
The funeral service for Robert D. Mayo, 86, of Rutland who died Oct. 15, 2001, was held Thursday at the Tossing Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward A. Hackett Jr., pastor of United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
The American Legion Post 31 provided military honors. LeRoy Norse made the flag presentation. George Zsido sounded “Taps.”
Bearers were Michael Boucher, Richard Littler, Craig Lyons, Rodger Goodrich and Nicholas Ross, all of Rutland and Ted Ryan of Shelburne.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Tossing Funeral Home.
Frank K. Binder Rites
The memorial Mass for Frank Karel Binder, 79, of Rutland who died Oct. 14, 2001, was celebrated Thursday at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fair Haven with the Rev. Richard Tinney, pastor, officiating.
Ministers of the altar were Clem Levesque, Joe Drain and Bruce Westcott.
Organist was Nancy Wetherby accompanied by the church choir.
Reader was Eric Sahlberg, a family friend from Bethel, Maine.
Words of remembrance were shared by family members and a special song was sung by Mr. Binder’s daughters.
The family received friends at the Fair Haven Inn for a time of fellowship and reflection.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven.
Adrian A. Curtis Jr. Rites
PROCTOR — The funeral service for Adrian A. Curtis Jr., 65, of Granville, N.Y., and former resident of Proctor, who died Oct. 13, 2001, was held Thursday at St. Dominic’s Church in Proctor with the Rev. Raymond D. Walsh, chaplain of Loretto Home in Rutland, officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery in Proctor.
Minister of the altar was Leo Pomainville.
Organist was Margaret Curtis. Vocalists were Mary Jo Knapp and Robert Hargar.
Reader was Gail Curtis.
Words of remembrance were offered by Aaron Curtis, a nephew, and Timothy Curtis, a cousin.
American Legion Post 323 of Granville provided military honors.
Bearers were nephews Aaron Curtis of Archdale, N.C., Peter Curtis of Shrewsbury, Mass., Simon Curtis of Burlington, Christopher Curtis of Newington, Conn., Jeffrey Curtis of Suffield, Conn., Benjamin Curtis of Elmira, N.Y., and John Finter of Rochester, N.Y.
A prayer service was held Wednesday at the Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Walsh.

Francis P. Pierce
GRANVILLE — Francis P. Pierce, 70, died Oct. 17, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born Oct. 21, 1930, in Warren, the son of Hiram and Freda (Thompson) Pierce.
He attended schools in Warren and later moved to Rochester.
Mr. Pierce married Betty Robinson in 1963 in Warren.
He worked as a logger in Rochester, at Weyerhauser of Hancock and Phyles and Rice in Bethel and farmed in Fort Ann, N.Y.
He enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his wife of Granville; seven sons, Francis Pierce Jr. of Concord, N.H., Robert Pierce of Moretown, John King of Stoughton, Mass., Wayne Pierce of Granville, Michael Blake of White River Junction, Duwayne Smith of Chester and William Smith of Waterbury; five daughters, Laurie Ainsworth and Cindy Belisle of Rochester, Pattie Twitchell of Granville, Veronica Pierce of Windsor and Dawn Waite of Hancock; three brothers, Elwin Pierce of Warren, Merlin Pierce of Cabot and Carl Pierce of North Adams, Mass.; four sisters, Harriet Whitney of Warren, Marion Pearce of Shelburne Falls, Mass., Corrine Whitney and Hester Whitney of North Adams, Mass.; and 14 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Edward Pierce.
The graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery in Rochester with the Rev. William Daniels officiating.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

WINDSOR — Harry S. Silloway, 73, died Oct. 18, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

SPRINGFIELD — The funeral service for Irene L. Simonds, 94, who died Oct. 15, 2001, was held Thursday at the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Harold Harrison officiating. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery.
Personal remarks were offered by her son-in-law, Verne Breault, and several other family members.
Bearers were Gerald Breault of Woodstock, Larry Griswold and Christopher Griswold, both of North Springfield; Verne Breault of Winchendon, Mass., Mark Mumgeam of Douglas, Mass., and Robert Kane of Holliston, Mass.

SPRINGFIELD — The graveside funeral service for Felix Torres, 71, who died Oct. 13, 2001, was held Thursday in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Springfield with the Rev. Richard Cederholm, pastor of North Springfield Baptist Church, officiating.
