Myrtle E. Shaw
BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. — Myrtle E. Shaw, 93, died July 24, 2001, at Schuyler Ridge Nursing Home in Clifton Park.
She was born Jan. 27, 1908, the daughter of Rollin and Ellen Johnson.
She was a homemaker, and worked for Ackshand Knitting Co. in Ballston Spa for several years as an inspector and Stanley Products for many years.
Mrs. Shaw was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Catholic Daughters.
She was an avid bingo player.
Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Brunell and Phyllis Mangino, both of Ballston Spa, and Roberta Grolley of Saratoga Springs; a sister, Ella Carrara of Rutland, Vt.; a brother, Howard Johnson of New Brunswick, Canada; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Donald C. Gemmell
A celebration of life for Donald C. Gemmell, 67, who died July 14, 2001, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Middletown Springs Community Church with the Rev. Roland Mitcheson, pastor of the Middletown Springs Community Church, and the Rev. Robert Flower, pastor of the South Granville (N.Y.) Congregational Church, officiating.
Family and friends are invited for a time of remembrance and fellowship at the Middletown Springs Fire Co. following the service.

Paulita E. Poirier rites
The funeral service for Paulita Eva Poirier, 88, of Rutland, who died July 24, 2001, was held Thursday at the Aldous Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas V. Mattison, associate pastor of Christ the King Church, officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Bearers were Kenneth Walker Jr., Robert Knight Sr., Robert Knight Jr., Leonard Trombley and Donald Niles.

Frances E. LaVecchia rites
The funeral service for Frances E. (Pitaniello) LaVecchia, 90, of Rutland, who died July 21, 2001, was held Thursday at St. Peter’s Church with the Rev. John Herbert, assistant pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.
Ministers of the altar were James Davidson, Al Michael Cioffi, Sister Judy Levins and Joseph Tilden.
Organist was John Riddle and vocalist was Elise Bushey Cassarino.
Readers were Nicole Campanella, George Cronin Jr. and Lynn Hayes.
Words of remembrance were offered by a daughter, Connie Colbert.
Bearers were George Cronin Jr. of Eldersburg, Md., John Markowski Jr. of Brandon, Kevin Markowski of Rutland, Robert Colbert III of Boylston, Mass., Robert Campbell of Whitman, Mass., and Frank Padula of Albany, N.Y. Honorary bearers were David Cronin and Daniel Cronin.
A prayer service was held Wednesday afternoon at the Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Herbert.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
Maitland C. Marshall
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Maitland C. Marshall, 57, died July 25, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born Oct. 31, 1943, in Windsor, the son of Colon and Marion (Barrows) Marshall.
He attended Austine School for the Deaf in Brattleboro.
Mr. Marshall moved from Windsor to White River Junction, where he had lived with his brother for the past 12 years.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and watching animals in their natural habitats.
Survivors include a brother, Darrell W. Conley Jr. of White River Junction; two sisters, Geraldine Slayton of Meriden, N.H., and Bonnie Ladeau of Windsor; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor with Lawrence LaPierre officiating. Burial will follow in Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor.
Friends may call today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Roberta B. Miller
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Roberta “Bobby” Brunner Miller, 89, died July 26, 2001, at Brookside Nursing Home after a long illness.
She was born Dec. 9, 1911, in Rutherford, N.J., the daughter of Robert A. and Marion (Kipp) Brunner.
She graduated from Rutherford High School and Skidmore College in 1934 with a bachelor’s degree in science.
She married Richard G. “Dick” Miller in 1936 in Fairlee.
They moved to White River Junction, where they owned and operated 25,000 Gifts for many years.
Mrs. Miller was active in the United Methodist Church, parents associations of the schools and Loyal Club, all in White River Junction.
She and her husband lived in Paradise Valley, Ariz., during the winter, and while there she was a member and president of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and active in the Paradise Valley Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Roberta L. Cowan of Hanover, N.H.; a son, Richard K. Miller of Wilder; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1998.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Hartford Cemetery in White River Junction.

Laura K. Holbrook
PENN YAN, N.Y. — Laura K. “Gram” Holbrook, 87, formerly of Weston, Vt., died July 25, 2001, at her home.
She was born Sept. 26, 1913, in Brownington, Vt., the daughter of Wallace and Addie Sanborn Kenneson.
Survivors include two sons, Wallace W. Holbrook of Gorham, Maine, and Wendell W. Holbrook of Langdon, N.H.; two daughters, Madeline Grandy of South Burlington, Vt., and Marion Searles of Penn Yan; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a niece and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Maurice Holbrook in 1991.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel in Penn Yan.
Friends may call Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Walter Welebit
MANCHESTER VILLAGE — Walter Welebit, 81, died July 23, 2001, at Centers for the Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.
He was born in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Gabriel and Stella (Narancich) Welebit.
Mr. Welebit married Mala Glavadovich. She died in 1998.
He worked as a correspondent for The Associated Press in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, for several years. He also trained and worked as a still photographer and later became a filmmaker. Mr. Welebit owned and operated a film company in New York City, and he produced promotional films for numerous companies including Boeing and Air France. He won a gold medal at the Venice Film Festival in 1969 for a feature film he wrote and directed.
Mr. Welebit served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a flight engineer in the western Pacific and received the rank of corporal.
Survivors include a son, Michael Welebit of Seattle, Wash.; and a daughter, Diane Welebit of Manchester.
Mr. Welebit was cremated at Vermont Cremation Service in Bennington. Services will be held at the convenience of the family and announced at a later date.

Glenn E. Durfee
BRIDPORT — Glenn E. “Durf” Durfee Sr., 80, died July 25, 2001, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.
He was born July 1, 1921, in Madison, Wis., son of John and Alice (Bristol) Durfee.
He was a dairy farmer in Bridport.
Mr. Durfee served in the U.S. Army at Panama Canal.
He served as a town selectman in Bridport, was one of the founders of the Tri-Town Water District and served as superintendent for 18 years. Mr. Durfee was the original water commissioner until his retirement in 1984. He was a charter member of the Bridport Volunteer Fire Department and became a lifetime member of the fire department in 1985.
Survivors include a son, Glenn “Skip” Durfee Jr. of Moriah, N.Y.; three daughters, Patricia Gingras of Bristol, Judy Charlebois of Addison and Cyrena Burghart of Valley Falls, Kan.; his companion, C. Jean Devino; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline (Briggs) Durfee in 1996; a son, John H. Durfee in 1997; a granddaughter in 1994; and a brother, Ray Durfee.
The memorial service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Sanderson Funeral Service, 117 S. Main St., Middlebury.
Calling hours will be held Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Irene E. Ritzler
Irene Elizabeth Ritzler, 94, of Rutland, died July 23, 2001, at Eden Park Nursing Home.
She was born April 8, 1907, daughter of Angie Rickert and Frederick Conant.
She had lived in Vermont, New York and New Jersey.
Mrs. Ritzler enjoyed traveling, and she and her husband traveled throughout Europe.
Survivors include two nieces, Elizabeth Bennett and Sandra Wood; a great-niece, Lindsay Ben-nett and great-nephew, Geoffrey Bennett; and several other great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, George Ritzler; five brothers; and three sisters.
Mrs. Ritzler was cremated.
