Francis MacJarrett

BENNINGTON - Francis "Tom" MacJarrett, 69, of Bennington died May 27, 2001, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

He was born in Montpelier on March 16, 1932, the son of Alfred and Bertha (Adams) MacJarrett.

He received his education in Bennington and was a member of the class of 1950 at Bennington High School.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Mr. MacJarrett married Mabel Vachon in Bennington on May 27, 1955.

He worked for New England Telephone for 36 years and worked as a splice technician until the time of his retirement in 1991.

He was a member of Tucker Lodge 48, F&AM, in North Bennington, and was a 32nd degree member of the Masons and Cairo Shriners Temple in Rutland. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 13 in Bennington.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Hale Mountain Fish and Game Club, the Catamount Bow Club, Ducks Unlimited and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel MacJarrett of Bennington; two sons, Thomas Michael MacJarrett of Glens Falls, N.Y., and David MacJarrett of Bennington; a daughter, Laurie Ann Battis of Fort Edward, N.Y.; two sisters, Lorraine Lorette and Laura MacJarrett, both of Bennington; a brother, Gerald MacJarrett of Bennington; five grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. MacJarrett was predeceased by a brother, Homer MacJarrett.

The funeral will be held from St. Peter's Episcopal Church Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Arthur Kingdon, rector, officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Members of the Tucker Lodge 48 F&AM, in North Bennington are requested to meet at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. to conduct their service.

Contributions may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Robert P. Harrington

BENNINGTON - Robert P. "Bob" Harrington, 68, of Bennington, a local radio news reporter in the area for more than 40 years, died May 26, 2001, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a long illness.

He was born in Manchester on Nov. 28, 1932, the son of Joseph H. Harrington and Anne (Pettibone) Harrington Wilkins.

He lived his early years in Dorset and Manchester. He graduated from Burr & Burton Seminary in Manchester and later attended Norwich University.

A veteran of the Korean War, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and was stationed in England with the 3rd Air Force from 1952 until 1956.

Following his military service, he attended the Leland Powers School of Radio, Television and Theatre in Boston, graduating in 1958.

At that time, Mr. Harrington came to Bennington, where he began his long career at WBTN. For more than 40 years, he covered local news and sporting events for the radio station. Affectionately known as "the voice of Bennington," he became a local institution and was highly respected throughout the surrounding communities for his professionalism and fairness.

He retired from WBTN in 2000 when the station was purchased by Vermont Public Radio. In the spring of 2001, when Robert Howe purchased the AM station, Mr. Harrington joined the staff on a part-time basis. In October 1998 he was honored at a community tribute in his honor. At that time, several local, state and national public figures paid him tribute.

In addition, he served in several area organizations. He was president and former member of the Bennington Jaycees, a member and former president of the Bennington Regional Alcohol Council, a member and former president of the Bennington Rotary Club, a former member of the board of directors of the United Counseling Service of Bennington County, a former member and treasurer of the Vermont Association of Broadcasters and a former member of both American Legion Post 13 and VFW Post 1332 in Bennington.

He is survived by three daughters, Michelle A. Harrington and Julie Stratton, both of Bennington, and Heather L. Stratton of Burlington; two sons, Michael A. Harrington and Matthew R. Harrington, both of White Creek, N.Y.; his longtime companion and friend, Jane Bleau of Bennington; his former wives, Patricia Harrington and Deborah Macklin; a brother Joseph H. Harrington of Manchester; five grandchildren; and several nieces, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

A gathering to celebrate his life will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Paradise Restaurant on West Main Street in Bennington.

Dan Allen Sr.

Dan Allen Sr., 92, died June 17, 2001, at Rutland Region Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 24, 1908, in Quincy, Mass., son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Allen.

He graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in civil engineering.

He was married to Henrietta Delmage of Watertown, Mass., who died in 1987.

He moved to Vermont in the early 1930s, he started his first business, a Tydol gas station on Grove Street.

During World War II, Mr. Allen entered the U.S. Army, serving with the Army Corps of Engineers. He was a captain in the Philippines in command of an all black battalion. During the Korean War he was called back for service with the Corps of Engineers.

As a registered, professional civil engineer, he worked with the state of Vermont, building roads and bridges before starting his own business, Allen Engineering, Pools and Spas, in 1957. The business began with a benefit pool project at Tamarack Notch, the former Girl Scout camp in Mendon. He continued to work for the business until last year.

He served for 11 years as an alderman in the city of Rutland. He also served for six terms in the Vermont House of Representatives. He served for a period as urban renewal director in the city of Rutland and twice ran for mayor, losing one contest by 200 votes.

He was a member of American Legion Post 31 and served as post commander.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel Allen Jr. of Wallingford and Edward Allen of Pittsford; a daughter, Kerry Clifford of Brandon; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his longtime companion, Mary Cyr of Rutland.

The funeral service will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Tossing Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon.

Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Tossing Funeral Home.

Richard Davis Rites

The memorial service for Richard "Dick" Davis, 63, of Rutland, who died June 11, 2001, was held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the United Methodist Church. The Rev. Edward A. Hackett Jr., pastor, officiated. Burial was in Pittsfield Cemetery, with the Rev. Hackett offering the committal prayers.

Organist, handbell choir director and accompanist was Karen James. Ellen Wakker conducted the Joy Choir. Licia Gambino-Hamilton was flutist.

Words of remembrance were offered by family and friends.

Members of the RHS class of 1956 attended the service.

Albert L. Ransom Rites

The memorial service for Albert L. Ransom, 69, of Rutland, who died June 13, 2001, was held Saturday at the Grace Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. Amelia C. Pitton, associate pastor, officiated.

Words of remembrance were given by Dr. Jody Ransom, a daughter, and Becky Daley, a granddaughter.

Organist was Alan D. Walker.

The Tossing Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lillian T. Webster

Lillian T. Webster, 82, of Ira, died June 16, 2001, at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home after a long illness.

She was born Feb. 3, 1916, in Pembroke, N.H., the daughter of Josiah and Gertrude (Hall) Treloar.

She married Richard A. Webster in October 1940. He died Oct. 11, 1999.

Mrs. Webster and her husband owned and operated Ira Valley Antiques.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol A. Berg of Ira; a brother, Josiah Treloar Jr. of New Hampshire; a granddaughter; nieces, a nephew and grandnephews.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery in Ira. The Rev. Stephen Garvey, pastor of the First Congregational Church in Essex Junction, will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be to the Ira Volunteer Fire Department, in care of Mr. Robert Toppin, 504 Toppin Rd., Ira, 05777.

There will be no calling hours.

Tossing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rachel K. Mills

FLORENCE - A memorial service for Rachel K. Mills, 81, who died June 15, 2001, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Pittsford Congregational Church.

A private committal service will be held in Evergreen Cemetery in Pittsford at the family's convenience.

Contributions may be made to the Pittsford Congregational Church, P.O. Box 149, Pittsford, 05763, or to the Pittsford Historical Society, P.O. Box 423, Pittsford, 05763.

The Barnard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond F. Ravenna Rites

WEST RUTLAND - The funeral service for Raymond Francis Ravenna, 72, of West Rutland, who died June 13, 2001, was held Saturday at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Rutland. The Rev. Sharon Hughes, pastor, officiated. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Hughes reading the prayers of the burial service.

Organist was Mary Millette. Soloist was Jean Radaker.

Words of remembrance were offered by Elizabeth Stevens and Richard DelBianco.

Bearers were Richard DelBianco of Center Rutland; Wade Ballou of Rutland; Jorg Bernhard, Adrian Bernhard and Ralph Williams, all of West Rutland; Donald Lemmo of Litchfield, N.H., and Bruce Rand of Dedham, Mass.

Honorary bearers representing the Italian Aid Society were Larry Bolgioni, Frank Bruno, Thomas Ascoli, Edward Garrow and Joseph Solari.

A military service was provided by West Rutland American Legion Post 87. Mitch Oskoski presented the flag to the family.

A prayer service was held Friday evening at the Mullin-Clifford Funeral home by Rev. Hughes.

Phyllis Wilder Rites

A graveside service for Phyllis (Whitmore) Wilder, 73, of Rutland, who died March 27, 2001, was held Saturday in Hillside Cemetery in Castleton. The Rev. Audrey Murdock, assistant pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church in Rutland, officiated.

The Clifford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Robert E. Goss

BRANDON - Robert E. Goss, 74, died June 17, 2001, at Starr Farm Nursing Center in Burlington.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Miller and Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

A complete obituary will appear in a future edition of the Rutland Herald.

Edward M. Ennis

SUNDERLAND - Edward M. Ennis, 55, of Sunderland, died at his residence June 15, 2001, after a long illness.

He was born in Sunderland June 19, 1945, the son of Donald L. and Dorothy (Kesick) Ennis.

He received his education in Arlington schools.

He married Mary Lowell in Bethel, Maine, on Aug. 17, 1974.

He was a truck driver for many years, most recently for Mack Molding. He had also driven for Holmes Transportation Co. and St. Johnsbury Trucking. Before becoming a truck driver, he worked for the Grand Union Co.

Mr. Ennis enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his father of Bennington; a daughter, Cynthia G. Root of Perkinsville; a stepdaughter, Catherine Anderson of Danby; two brothers, Lewis Ennis and Anthony Ennis, both of Sunderland; five sisters, Anna Moss of Sunderland, Priscilla Hall of Bennington, Jeanette Cyphers of Waterford, N.Y., Dorothy Goober of Sunderland and Donna Hewes of Lakeland, Fla.; two grandchildren; two aunts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Clifford "Skip" Ennis.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland with the Rev. Mary Lee-Clark officiating.

Friends may call at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
