Alfred J. Bushway

SPRINGFIELD — Alfred J. Bushway, 81, died May 29, 2001, at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction.

He was born June 27, 1919, in North Walpole, N.H., son of Felix and Agnes (Eno) Bushway.

He attended schools in Walpole, N.H.

Mr. Bushway married Natalie J. Roy of Charlestown, N.H., on June 20, 1942, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in North Walpole, N.H.

He worked at Green Box Co. in North Walpole, N.H., for 14 years and later in assembly at Fellows Gear Shaper Co. in North Springfield for 24 years, retiring in 1977.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps-Medical Corp with the 396 Bomb Squadron in the Pacific during World War II.

Mr. Bushway enjoyed camping and traveling.

Survivors include his wife of Springfield; a brother, Raymond Bushway of Littleton, N.H.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by five brothers, Melvin, Louis, John, Edward and Francis; and a sister, Edith Taggart.

Friends may call Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Davis Memorial Chapel, 99 Summer St., Springfield.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Mary Oliva

SOUTH STRAFFORD — Mary (Krivak) Oliva, 90, died May 30, 2001 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Arrangements are pending with the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

John H. Harris

PROCTORSVILLE — Committal services for John Henry Harris, 80, who died March 30, 2001, will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in Hillcrest Cemetery in Proctorsville with the Rev. William Sherwartz officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Ludlow.

Betty J. Spaulding

PROCTORSVILLE — The graveside committal service for Betty J. Spaulding, 65, who died April 1, 2001, will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in Cavendish Village Cemetery in Cavendish with the Rev. Jane Buswell of Tyson officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Robert J. Mayhew rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral service for Robert J. Mayhew, who died May 25, 2001, was held Tuesday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church with the Rev. William H. Kelley, associate pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Organist was Randall Krum and soloist was Monica Murray.

Ralph Brown and Joseph Krawczyk of American Legion Post 13 in Bennington provided military honors.

Bearers were John R. Mayhew, Robert B. Mayhew, Regis M. Mayhew and Barry F. Mayhew, sons, and Eric Mayhew and Thomas Mayhew, grandsons. Honorary bearers, from the Bennington Post Office, where Mr. Mayhew had been employed, were Rene Cassano, Joseph Russell, Patrick O’Neil and Ethan Smith.

A prayer service preceded the funeral Mass at Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Members of Green Mountain Chapter of the American Red Cross and Southwestern Vermont Hospital Auxiliary attended the service.

Arrangements were under the direction of Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Debra Gerity rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral service for Debra Gerity, who died May 25, 2001, was held Tuesday at Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Penny Rich Smith, pastor of North Bennington Congregational Church, officiating. Burial followed in White Chapel Cemetery.

Bearers were Rodney Tobin and Louis Tobin, brothers, Scott Rose, brother-in-law, Edward Myers, nephew, Bob Gerity and Chris Gallant.

Arrangements were under the direction of Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

James A. Merrow Jr. rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral service for James A. Merrow Jr., who died May 25, 2001, was held Tuesday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial was offered by the Rev. Laurence Olszewski, pastor. Burial followed in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Organist was Donald McMahon and soloist was Monica Murray.

Ralph Brown and Joseph Krawczyk of American Legion Post 13 in Bennington provided military honors. They presented the flag to Mrs. Pierette Merrow. Taps were sounded by Maurice Rancourt.

Bearers were George Sleeman, Robert Houle, Charles Gould, John McShane and Thomas Beshara

Arrangements were under the direction of Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Eileen A. Dalton

NEWARK, Del. — Eileen A. Dalton, 66, died May 29, 2001, of cancer.

She was born in Garnerville, N.Y., daughter of Alice T. and Lt. Col. John J. Dalton.

She graduated from the University of Delaware in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s degree in history.

Ms. Dalton was a physical education teacher at the elementary and middle school level in the Newark School District from 1956 to 1964.

She was awarded a National Defense Education Act Scholarship to Penn State University and received a master’s degree in counseling in 1965. She was a guidance counselor and head of the guidance department at Dickinson High School in New Castle County, Del., retiring in 1987.

Ms. Dalton was a member of the National Education Association and Delaware State Education Association.

Survivors include her mother of Havertown, Pa.; a brother, Dr. John J. Dalton of Salisbury, Vt.; a sister, Rita D. Ranieri of West Chester, Pa.; 11 nieces and nephews; and 16 grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral Mass will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Boot Road, West Chester. Burial will follow in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens in King of Prussia, Pa.

Friends may call Friday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vitas Hospice, 1740 Walton Rd., Suite 100, Blue Bell, Pa., 19422.

Arrangements are under the direction of Alleva Funeral Home in Paoli, Pa.

Mary F. Lyman rites

The graveside service for Mary F. Lyman, 79, of Rutland, who died March 21, 2001, was held Thursday in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fair Haven with the Rev. Richard W. Tinney, pastor of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven, and the Rev. James J. McShane, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Rutland, co-officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Tossing Funeral Home.

Leona J. Tobin rites

FAIR HAVEN — The funeral Mass for Leona Jeanette Tobin, 88, who died May 28, 2001, was celebrated Thursday at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Tinney, parish priest, officiating. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Ministers of the altar were Dominic Amerio, Paul Patten and David Garvey.

Organist was Nancy Wetherby and soloist was MaryJo Knapp.

The wake service was held Wednesday evening at the Durfee Funeral Home by the Rev. Tinney.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Mary Oliva

SOUTH STRAFFORD — Mary (Krivak) Oliva, 90, died May 30, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

She was born March 24, 1911, in New York City, daughter of Joseph and Anna (Serak) Krivak.

She attended school in Sharon.

She married Louis F. Oliva on May 24, 1935, in New York City. He died in 1989.

Mrs. Oliva worked with her husband in the ladies dress shop that they owned in New York City. Later they owned and operated Oliva’s Originals dress shop in White River Junction and in 1969 they operated a dress shop in Kennebunk, Maine, and Eastport, Maine.

Survivors include a daughter, Marie Baker of South Strafford; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, John and Frank Krivak; and four sisters, Bertha Regensberg, Anna Magoon, Rosalie and Antoinette Krivak.

Friends may call Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bayside Cemetery in Eastport, Maine.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Intensive Care Unit at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, N.H., 03756.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Edward C. Lucas

BRIDGEWATER — Edward Charles Lucas, 59, died May 30, 2001, at Mount Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor.

He was born Aug. 31, 1941, in Paterson, N.J., son of Edward A. and Lethia (Gradick) Lucas.

He graduated from Paterson High School in New Jersey and attended Rutgers University and the University of Maryland.

Mr. Lucas married Pamela Young on Dec. 27, 1970.

He was employed as an officer for the New Jersey Highway Patrol from 1965 to 1971 and as a Vermont State Police trooper from 1971 to 1978. From 1978 to the present, Mr. Lucas owned and operated the Continental Detective Agency and co-owned the ADA Traffic Control Agency.

He served with the U.S. Army military police in Germany.

Mr. Lucas was president of the New Jersey State Police Patrolmen Benevolent Association Highway Patrol Section, and served as a member of the Vermont House from Windsor County. He was a member of the American Legion Geno-Robinson Post 11 in Bridgewater, Bridgewater Board of Civil Authority, the National Republican Party and the Bridgewater Congregational Church.

Survivors include his wife of Bridgewater; four daughters, Allison Weglarz of Quechee, Jessica Lucas of New Fairfield, Conn., Rachel Lucas and Rebecca Lucas, both of Bridgewater; three brothers, Bryan Lucas of Ramsey, N.J., Robert Lucas of Clifton, N.J., and Richard Lucas of Quechee; three sisters, Patricia Ferraro and Lethia Hartz, both of Mahwah, N.J., and Cathy Lucas-VanDerPlaats of Wayne, N.J.; two aunts; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, and a daughter, Katie Lucas.

The memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Bridgewater Congregational Church. Burial will be private and held in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Bridgewater.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Mount Ascutney Hospital and Health Center (MAHHC), Hospice Program, 1 County Road, Windsor.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home, 1 Rose Hill, Woodstock, 05091.

Garda Villers

WESTMINSTER — Garda Villers, 95, died May 30, 2001, at her home.

As a young woman, she fled her native Germany in 1936 because of her strong opposition to the Nazis, arriving in New York as a political refugee in 1942. She and her husband came to Vermont in 1946.

She was a professional model and later a professional fashion photographer for many years.

Survivors include a son, Philippe of Concord, Mass.; a grandson; two granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.
