Harold E. Codding
RENO, Nev. — Harold Edward Codding, 80, died May 13, 2001, at the Manor at Lakeside in Reno.
He was born Sept. 6, 1920, in Johnson, Vt., son of Harold E. and Helen I. Stinson Codding.
His family moved to Woodstock, Vt., in 1924, where he attended public schools and graduated in 1938.
Mr. Codding married Bette Schoenfeld in November 1945 in Woodstock. She died in 1985. He married Norma J. Stellon in 1986. She died in 1996.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet for pilot training and received a commission in 1943. He was a flight instructor and member of the first B-29 wing in the Pacific. He flew 38 missions as a B-29 commander and was honorably discharged from the Air Force as a captain.
He was among the first American instructors in Sun Valley, Idaho, teaching there until 1946. He was then hired by Keston Ramsey to head the ski school at Sky Tavern in Reno. Mr. Codding was one of the founders of the Sky Tavern Junior Ski Program and coached the University of Nevada alpine ski team. He opened Codding and Wetzel Ski Center in 1953 with UNR skier Jerry Wetzel and remained in the ski business until the store closed in 1976. He was arcade manager for the MGM Grand until retiring in 1997.
Mr. Codding had served as president of the Reno Men’s Club and was a former member of the Reno Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his children, Cindi C. Murin, Kimberly E. Bewer, Kristie L. Johnson and Jeffrey R. Codding, all of Reno, Timothy S. Codding of Bozeman, Mont., Karen A. Futch of Fallon; 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; a stepson, Stephen W. Albert of Reno; and a granddaughter.
He was predeceased by a son, David A. Codding, who died in 1996.
The memorial service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 3835 Lakeside Drive.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Sky Tavern Junior Ski Program.

PERU — The service to remember the life of Nancy Marie Stratton Jones, 73, who died April 10, 2001, will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with Kermit Reilly officiating. A private burial service was held earlier in White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington.
A time of fellowship and refreshment for those in attendance will be held in the social room of St. James Episcopal Church in Arlington following the service.

MANCHESTER — The graveside service of committal for Pauline Beebe, 83, of Clifton Park, N.J., and formerly of Manchester, who died April 3, 2001, will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in South Village Cemetery in East Dorset with the Rev. Larry Jenny, pastor of East Dorset Congregational Church, officiating.

Leda G. Cooke
BOURNE, Mass. — Leda Grace Cooke, 87, died May 29, 2001, at JML Care Center in Falmouth.
She was born July 23, 1913, in Orwell, Vt., daughter of Eugene and Ida (Stedman) Bishop.
She resided in Worcester before moving to Falmouth. While in Worcester, she was a sales clerk for R.H. White’s Dept. Stores for several years.
Survivors include a son, Wendall E. Cooke of Bourne; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Cooke in 1992.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven, Vt., with the Rev. Gordon Naser, pastor of the United Church of West Rutland, officiating. Burial will follow in Fair View Cemetery in Benson, Vt.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to a favorite charity.

Louise M. Nutter, 42, a former resident of Rutland, died May 29, 2001, at Vermont Respite House in Williston.

Charles R. Hale Sr.
GREENFIELD, Mass. — Charles R. Hale Sr., 61, died May 29, 2001, at his home after a period of declining health.
He was born June 1, 1939, in Greenfield, son of Ralph and Catherine (Cormie) Hale.
He was educated in local schools in Greenfield.
Mr. Hale married Carol Marie Kraaz in 1963. The marriage ended in divorce.
He worked for the Bosticht Co. in Clinton, Conn., as a machinist in the manufacturing plant for more than 12 years. He later worked for Propel Plastics Co. in South Deerfield, retiring due to poor health in 1996.
Mr. Hale was a U.S. Army veteran, attaining the rank of specialist 4th class.
He was active in the First Baptist Church of Essex, Conn., and served as a member of the church’s deaconate. He was a member of the Greenfield American Legion Post 81.
He was an avid Red Sox fan and baseball fan, and enjoyed watching NASCAR racing. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed drawing.
Survivors include his former wife of Waterford, Conn.; two sons, Charles R. Hale Jr. and Ralph L. Hale, both of Fair Haven, Vt.; two stepsons, Lewis Walden of Higganum, Conn., and Dennis Walden of Fair Haven, Vt.; two stepdaughters, Sharon Harris of McKinney, Texas, and Donna Losco of Fair Haven, Vt.; five brothers, J. Edward Hale of Guilford, Vt., Leon Hale and Robert Hale, both of Greenfield, Fred Hale of West Palm Beach, Fla., and David Hale of Conway; three sisters, Louise Spondre of Lantana, Fla., Margaret Cowan and Linda Charest, both of Montague; two granddaughters; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at McCarthy Funeral Home, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield with the Rev. Guy Stockslager, pastor of First Baptist Church of Turners Falls, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Center Cemetery in Bernardston.
Calling hours will be held Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Graveside committal services for Katherine “Katie” Hewitt, 96, who died Jan. 6, 2001, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery in Pittsford with the Rev. Edward Hackett of United Methodist Church in Rutland officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.
Rose Weiss rites
The funeral service for Rose Unger Weiss, 97, of Rutland, who died May 27, 2001, was held Wednesday at Rutland Jewish Center with Rabbi Solomon D. Goldberg officiating. Burial followed in Rutland Jewish Cemetery in East Clarendon.
Present in the sanctuary was Michael Olinick, president of Rutland Jewish Center.
Bearers were Douglas Frazer of Milwaukee, Wis., David Frazer of Phoenix, Ariz., Maurice Mintzer of Rutland, Laurence Aronson of Saratoga, N.Y., Samuel Ravit of Shelburne, Gerald Weiss of Amherst, Mass., and Joel Aronson of Muncie, N.Y.
Honorary bearers were members of Airoc Court, Ladies Shrine 42.

Ray I. Seymour
STOCKBRIDGE — Ray I. Seymour, 94, died May 29, 2001, at Mountain View Center Genesis Elder Care in Rutland.
He was born May 10, 1907, in Brookfield, son of Philip and Hazel (Smith) Seymour.
He was educated in Brookfield and Williamstown schools.
Mr. Seymour married Dorothy May Bix on Nov. 27, 1934, in Lebanon, N.H. She died in March 2001.
He was a chauffeur in New London, Conn., a lineman for Central Vermont Public Service Corp. for 11 years, owned and operated Seymour’s Saw Mill in Gaysville and in 1963 owned and operated Seymour Roofing Co., retiring in 1976.
He served the town of Stockbridge as justice of the peace, zoning administrator and school director. He was a member of I00F Lodge 74 in Bethel.
Mr. Seymour enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, bowling, golf and gardening.
Survivors include a son, Lloyd Seymour of West Lebanon, N.H.; five daughters, Kay Rhoades of Barnard, Sandra Machia of Wallingford, Linda LaFave of Barnard and Gail Ketchum of Stockbridge; a brother, P. Norton Seymour of Braintree; a sister, Doris Seymour of Braintree; 22 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Knight; a brother, Dolph Seymour; and three sisters, Gertrude Scarborough, Mildred Darling and Marcia Roy.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Stockbridge Common Cemetery with the Rev. Alan Hoskins officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

Anne L. Jackman
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Anne Lovell Wilson Jackman, 81, died May 29, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
She was born Sept. 14, 1919, in Rockingham, daughter of Leverett C. and Frances (Stockwell) Lovell.
She graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1937 and the University of Vermont in 1942.
She married Donald E. Wilson on May 23, 1942, in Albany, Ga. He died in 1961. She married Glenn F. Jackman on Dec. 2, 1972, in Bristol. He died in 1974.
Mrs. Jackman taught school in Bristol for two years and then was a dressmaker in her home for 40 years, retiring in 1986. She then moved to White River Junction to live with her sister.
She served two terms on the Bristol School Board and 10 years as district clerk at Mount Abraham Union High School. She was a member of the Outlook Club and American Legion Auxiliary in Bristol, a past member of Daughters of the American Revolution and a charter member of Green Mountain Civil War Roundtable, both in White River Junction.
Survivors include two sisters, Elisabeth L. Bowman of Toms River, N.J., and Aldis L. Dow of White River Junction; a son, Andon C. Wilson of Ludlow; a stepdaughter, Andrea Jackman Halnon of Lincoln; a stepson, Dennis Jackman of Bristol; three step-grandsons and a step-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Patience Burke; and a brother, L. Putnam Lovell.
There will be no funeral service or calling hours.
