ANNETTE G. LAVALLEE
AMHERST, Mass - Annette G. LaVallee, a long-time registered nurse and volunteer, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, in Millard Fillmore Hospital after a long illness. She was 70.
The former Annette Gregoire, who was known to her friends and family as Angel, her nursing school nickname, was born in St. Albans, Vt. and grew up as the daughter of dairy farmers in Georgia. She graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans and attended nursing school at Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington.
In 1954, she married Courtland "Corky" LaVallee, who would later become a well known Buffalo attorney. The couple moved to Buffalo in 1960.
While her husband was studying at the University of Buffalo Law School, she was active in Welcome Wagon and UB's Law Wives organization.
Mrs. LaVallee put her nursing career on hold while raising her four children, but always found time to be active in the community. For many years she served as a volunteer coordinator with the Women's Board at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Amherst, including stints as a officer.
When her children were grown, Mrs. LaVallee fulfilled her long-time dream of returning to college for her degree. "She had always set for herself the goal of getting her degree by the time she was 65." said her daughter Diane LaVallee, an assistant state attorney general, "So in 1996, she got it -- cum laude."
Mrs. LaVallee also worked for a long period as a registered nurse in UB's Human Sexuality Clinic retiring in 1996.
In addition, she served as campaign treasurer for former Assemblyman Richard R. Anderson of Amherst.
All of this was part of her life-long devotion to expanding her horizons; a trait she exhibited even throughout her illness, her daughter said, as well as demonstrating an enthusiasm that spread to her friends and family.
"She was always capable of finding some kind of excitement, even when she became sick, " Diane LaVallee said. "It was typical of her to look beyond what she was dealing with and be engaged with humanity."
In addition to her husband and daughter, Mrs. LaVallee is survived by two sons, Courtland Jr. of West Kingston, R.I., and Robert of Boston, Mass.; another daughter, Suzanne of Hyannis, Mass.; her mother, Alice Gregoire of St. Albans; a sister, Germaine Webb of Rutherfordton, N.C.; two brothers, Armand of St. Albans, and Maurice of Jekyll Island, Ga.; and a granddaughter.
Prayers were said Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in Amigone Funeral Home in Amherst, Mass. A Mass of Christian Burial followed in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Williamsville, Mass.
