Arthur F. Watson
WHITEHALL, N.Y. - Arthur "Bud" Frederick Watson, 76, died Jan. 3, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland, Vt.
He was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Whitehall, son of John and Bertha (Galameau) Watson.
In his early years he worked at Stevens Garage in Whitehall, owned and operated his own garage, worked for Hadeka Slate Co. in Poultney, Vt., and worked for General Electric Co. in Rutland, Vt., from which he retired.
Mr. Watson was a veteran of World War II.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 83 of Whitehall.
His hobbies included restoring vehicles, fishing, hunting, bowling and family get-togethers.
Survivors include his wife, Marilee Watson of Whitehall; five children, Arthur Watson of Granville and Timothy Watson, Marianne Blanchard, Lisa Hurley and Wayne Watson, all of Whitehall; a brother, Walter Watson of Fort Ann; six stepchildren, Lynne Graham of Hubbardton, Vt., Sherinne Thomson and Laurie Savage, both of Wallingford, Vt., Colenne Whalen of Clarendon, Vt., Mike Labelle of Rutland, Vt., and Renne Gee and family of West Rutland, Vt.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and 12 step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Marion (DeLorme) Watson, who died in 1990.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Hope Church in Whitehall with Father William A. Gorman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Greenmount Cemetery in Whitehall.
Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Jillson Funeral Home Inc., 46 Williams St., Whitehall. The American Legion Post 83 will meet at the funeral home at 8 p.m.
Bearers will be A.J. Watson, Fred Blanchard Joanne Eagan, William Hurley, Justin Hurley and Richard DeLorme.
A luncheon reception will be served for family and friends at the American Legion Post 83, Main Street, Whitehall, after the Mass.

Doris E. Cavnes
WELLS - The memorial service for Doris Elaine (Williams) Cavnes, 73, who died Jan. 3, 2001, will be celebrated Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Welsh Presbyterian Church in Poultney.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home of Poultney.
Arthur Golding Rites
The funeral for Arnold G. Golding, 77, who died Jan. 1, 2001, was held Thursday at the Clifford Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Tinney, pastor of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven, officiating. Entombment followed in Evergreen Cemetery with burial to be held at a later date.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
Gertrude Popovitch Rites
The funeral for Gertrude A. Popovitch, 81, of Rutland, who died Jan. 1, 2001, at her home, was held Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Peter's Church with the Rev. John Herbert, associate pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.
Organist was John Riddle and vocalist was Helen Davidson. Reader was James Davidson.
Bearers were Charles Popovitch Jr., Steven Blongy, Richard Blongy, Floyd Daniels, Joseph Lajoice and Timothy Paine, all of Rutland.
A prayer service was held Wednesday evening at the Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Herbert.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
Emil Raicht
EAST DUMMERSTON - Emil Raicht, 94, died Jan. 2, 2001, at his home.
He was born June 21, 1906, in New York City, son of Lazarus and Marie (Joli) Raicht.
He was raised in New York City and attended New York public schools.
Mr. Raicht married Elena Agnes Intrieri in 1934 in New York City.
He was an independent dress contractor for more than 30 years, and with his wife he owned and operated the El-France Dress Co. The Raichts worked for several New York dress designers, including Suzy Peretts and Gigi Young. Mr. Raicht retired in 1966. The Raichts moved to East Dummerston in 1995.
Mr. Raicht was a member of the Dress Manufacturers Association in New York City and a volunteer with the International Executive Service Corp. for many years.
His hobbies included golf, tennis, skiing, hiking and traveling. He also held a pilot's license for several years and enjoyed horseback riding.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years; two sons, Robert F. Raicht of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Raymond T. Raicht of Oneida, N.Y.; a daughter, Joyce T. DuBack of East Dummerston; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Lawrence Raicht; and two brothers, Raymond Raicht and Charles Raicht.
The funeral will be held at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home and is private. Burial will be held in Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, N.Y.
There will be no calling hours.

Jane Bernard
NORTH BENNINGTON - Jane Bernard, 88, a former resident of Albany, N.Y., and more recently of North Bennington, died Jan. 4, 2001, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 23, 1912, in Watervliet, N.Y., one of the twin daughters of L. and B. (Trela) Golash.
She received her education in Watervliet, N.Y.
She married Severin "Sam" Bernard on July 2, 1931, in Watervliet, N.Y. He died in 1999.
Mrs. Bernard worked for the Simmons Fastener Co. in Menands, N.Y., for many years, retiring in 1977.
She was an avid bowler.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra B. McKinney of St. Augustine, Fla.; a son, Ronald L. Bernard of Schenectady, N.Y.; two brothers, Michael Golash of Menands, N.Y., and Joseph Golash of Cohoes, N.Y.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Joan of Arc, 76 Old Menands Road, Menands, N.Y., where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated. Committal services will be held at Memory Gardens, Colonie, N.Y.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington. The vigil service will be offered Sunday afternoon.
Contributions may be made to St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington or the Bennington Rescue Squad through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home.

Geraldine T. Calvo
SPRINGSFIELD - Geraldine T. Calvo, 87, formerly of Sanford, Maine, died Jan. 3, 2001, at her daughter's home in Springfield.
She was born May 18, 1913, in Trapani, Sicily, Italy, daughter of Peter and Lucy (Stabile) Tranchida.
She lived in New Britain, Conn., for many years, where she worked at the Stanley Tool Co. and later as a seamstress for the Lord and Taylor Co. in West Hartford, Conn.
She later resided in the Sanford and Kennebunk, Maine, area for more than 30 years. She was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild in Sanford. For the past year, she has made her home in Springfield with her daughter, Teresa.
Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Battista of Springfield; a son, Joseph Calvo of Winslow, Maine; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Calvo, who died in 1993.
The memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church in Sanford, Maine. Burial will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery in New Britain, Conn., at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.

Lyndell C. Wood
SOUTH ROYALTON - Lyndell "Dell" C. Wood, 84, died Jan. 3, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born Nov. 17, 1916, in Washington, son of Walter and Annie (MacDonald) Wood.
He attended school in Randolph and graduated from Randolph High School in 1935. He worked for a year after graduation at Dustin's Mill before attending Bay Path College in Springfield, Mass., graduating in 1938. He then went to work for a brush company for a short time before returning to Randolph.
Mr. Wood married Beatrice Jones on April 27, 1946, in Poultney.
In 1940, he bought Citrate Drug Store, which he operated until 1942. He later worked for Paines Hardware Store in South Royalton, and after passing the Civil Service Exam was employed as a substitute clerk at the South Royalton post office. In 1959 he was appointed postmaster, a position he held until his retirement in 1976.
Mr. Wood served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 88th Infantry Division in the African and European theaters. He received the Bronze Star as well as other campaign medals for his combat service. He returned home in 1945.
He was the co-founder and member of the South Royalton Rescue Squad, past president of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the South Royalton Fire Department. He also served as town lister and tax assessor for four years, was past master of the Rising Sun Lodge, F&AM, a patron of the Eastern Star, member of the Three Rivers Planning Commission, past president of the National League of Postmaster of Vermont, and past president of the National League of Retired Federal Employees of Vermont.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing and spending time at his camp on Lake Carmi in Franklin. He spent many hours braiding rugs, caning chairs and making various other knickknacks out of wood. He also collected old bottles.
Survivors include his wife of South Royalton; a daughter, Anita W. Rogers of Montpelier; three brothers, W. Stanley Wood of Randolph, Ivan Wood of Plainville, Conn., and R. Austin Wood of Montpelier; a sister, Coralyn Osha of Randolph; two grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 13, at 1:30 p.m. at Bethany United Church of Christ on Main Street, Montpelier, with the Rev. Richard Crocker officiating. The committal service will be held at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery in Barre.
There will be no calling hours.

Roy A. Gardner
NORTH HARTLAND - Roy A. Gardner, 96, died Jan. 3, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a fall in his home.
He was born Sept. 26, 1904, in Weathersfield, son of William Henry and Winneford (Sawyer) Gardner.
He graduated from school in Springfield in 1924.
Mr. Gardner married Viola Witham in 1930.
He worked as a machinist in Springfield and Claremont, N.H., and moved to Hartford, Conn., where he worked at Pratt and Whitney. In 1947 he returned to Weathersfield, where he lived until moving to North Hartland.
He was a 50-year member of Progressive Grange and was a member of the Connecticut River Valley Pomona, the Vermont State Grange and the National Grange. He was a member of the North Hartland Community Church and proudly handed out the bulletins each Sunday.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and tinkering on cars. He built a 1922 Model T Ford from parts brought to him in boxes. In 1985 he used this car to transport his granddaughter from her wedding to her reception. He also loved telling stories of his hunting and fishing experiences.
Survivors include a daughter, Lois Allen of Barnet; a grandson; three great-granddaughters; and a great-great-grandson.
He was predeceased by his wife, who died in 1991; two daughters, Charlotte Jenne, who died in 1993, and Dorothy Barter, who died in 1998; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the North Hartland Community Church.
Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Helen C. Currier
CONCORD, N.H. - Helen C. Currier, 98, formerly of North Hartland, Vt., and Tilton, N.H., died Jan. 3, 2001, at Pleasant View Center in Concord.
She was born May 30, 1902, in North Hartland, Vt., daughter of Octave and Mary (Fitzmorris) Chamberlain.
She graduated from Hartford High School in 1920 and attended a course in teaching in White River Junction, Vt. She also attended the University of Vermont for continuing education courses.
She taught school at the Mountain School in Windsor, Vt., for three years and then in North Hartland for 43 years, retiring in 1967. She lived in North Hartland until moving to Tilton in 1976 to be closer to her daughter.
She was a member of St. Anthony's Church in White River Junction until she moved out of the area. She was active in community affairs and was a lifetime member of the North Hartland Community Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara C. Tracy of Concord; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by six sisters; a brother; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in White River Junction.
