Doris (Williams) Cavnes

WELLS - Doris Elaine (Williams) Cavnes, 73, beloved wife of Max P. Cavnes, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 3, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born September 3, 1927, in South Poultney, the daughter of Richard and Margaret (Davies) Williams. Following graduation from Poultney High School, she attended Ohio Wesleyan University, receiving the bachelor's degree in 1949, took nurses training at Western Reserve University, and subsequently earned a master's degree in student personnel from Indiana University.

Doris and Max were married in 1953 in Bloomington, Indiana. Following three years in Gunnison, Colorado, they served for 15 years as faculty residents in the freshman dormitory Centre College, Danville, Kentucky, where Max was dean of men and a faculty member until 1985. For almost 30 years, she also taught in elementary schools in Colorado and Kentucky.

After many years as summer residents, in 1985 they returned to Vermont, making their home in Wells. She was a village auditor, active in the Poultney Area Welsh-American Society, attended the Methodist Church in Wells, was a member of the Poultney Garden Club, and a beloved member of the community.

In addition to her husband, Doris is survived by a stepson, Ric, his wife and children; two nieces and a nephew; and innumerable "kids" from their years at Centre College.

A memorial service celebrating Doris' life will be held at the Welsh Presbyterian Church in Poultney at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 6. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial gifts may be made to the Doris Cavnes Memorial Fund at Centre College, 600 West Walnut Street, Danville, Ky., 40422; the Rutland County Humane Society, RR 2, Box 558, Stevens Road, Pittsford, Vt., 05763; or the American Cancer Society.

Joan R. Griffin

PROCTOR - Joan R. Griffin, 67, died Jan. 3, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Donald M. Curtis Sr. rites

WEST RUTLAND - The funeral for Donald M. Curtis Sr., 74, who died Dec. 29, 2000, at Rutland Regional Medical Center, was held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in West Rutland with the Rev. Frank Warzocha, pastor, officiating. Entombment followed, with burial to be held at a later date in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Organist was Dorothy Blicharz accompanied by the church choir.

Reader was Lorraine Davis.

The West Rutland American Legion Post 87 provided military honors.

Bearers were Stanley Jakubowski, Stanley Wos, Stanley Dziubek, Michael Dziubek, David Dziubek and Thomas Dziubek, all of West Rutland.

Prayer services were held Tuesday evening at the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Warzocha and American Legion Post 87.

Margaret Congrove

LUDLOW - Margaret "Maggie" Congrove, 77, died Jan. 1, 2001, at the Gill Home after a long illness.

She was born April 19, 1923, in Elmhurst, N.Y., daughter of Margaret and Gustuie Strauch.

She worked for Springfield Hospital and later for the Ludlow Police Department as a dispatcher.

Mrs. Congrove was a member of American Legion Post 36 of Ludlow and the Mermaids. She was also a member of the United Church of Ludlow.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Congrove of Ludlow; a son, Richard Franke of Mount Holly; a daughter, Terry Reichl of Long Island, N.Y.; a sister, Hope DeRoo of Ludlow; four grandchildren; and Connie Smith and son, whom she considered members of her family.

The memorial service will be private and held at a later date.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Ludlow Teen Center Inc., 106 Main St., Ludlow, 05149.

Mildred E. Whittaker

READING - Mildred E. Whittaker, 92, died Jan. 3, 2001, at Mount Ascutney Hospital and Health Center's Skilled Nursing Facility in Windsor.

She was born Feb. 27, 1908, in Clinton, Mass., daughter of Archibald and Ethel (Peabody) Kimball.

She was an honor graduate of Northbridge High School.

She was married to Stanley Whittaker on June 2, 1941, in Worcester, Mass. They made their home in Oxford, Mass., for many years before retiring to Vermont in 1961.

Mrs. Whittaker taught at Post Business School in Worcester and later worked in the insurance industry for many years.

She was an avid piano player, singer, and song writer for the Kimball Family Association. She was also an avid reader, craftsperson and gardener.

Survivors include a sister, Lilla Franks of Woodstock, Conn.; and three nieces and four nephews.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Mount Ascutney Hospital and Health Center, 289 County Road, Windsor, 05089.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor.

Norman Betit

BENNINGTON - Norman Betit, 55, died Jan. 3, 2001, at his residence in Graniteville.

He was born Oct. 24, 1945, in Bennington, son of Azarias and Bernadette (Sausville) Betit.

Survivors include a brother, Kenneth Betit of Bennington; two sisters, Claire Raina of Fairfield, Calif., and Cynthia Hoffman of Salem, N.Y.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael A. Demasi officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to Special Olympics through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home.

Selma Fogg Tenney

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION - Selma Fogg Tenney, 75, died Jan. 1, 2001, at Cedar Hill Continuing Care Center in Windsor after a long illness with multiple sclerosis.

She was born May 25, 1925, at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, N.H., daughter of Chester R. and Grace E. (Lynch) Fogg.

She graduated from Hartford High School in 1943.

She has lived in nursing homes for many years due to her illness, most recently at Cedar Hill Continuing Care Center in Windsor.

Survivors include a daughter, Sallyanne Gallant of Hampton, N.H.; a son, E. James Clifford of Eagle Nest, N.M.; two sisters, Barbara Fogg Reed of Enfield, N.H., and Jeanette Fogg VanKleeck of Bayonet Point, Fla.; a brother, Chester A. Fogg of Port Richey, Fla.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Tenney.

The graveside memorial service will be held at a later date in Hartford Cemetery in White River Junction.

Contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Vermont, 100 Dorset St., Suite 12, South Burlington, 05403.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Helen C. Courier

NORTH HARTLAND - Helen C. Courier, 98, of Concord, N.H., and formerly of North Hartland, died Jan. 3, 2001, at Pleasant View Center in Concord.

Funeral arrangements are pending with the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

LeRoy A. Clemons

LeRoy "Pete" A. Clemons, 81, a former resident of Pittsford, died Jan. 2, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 21, 1919, in Elizabethtown, N.Y., son of LeRoy and Mary (Bradley) Clemons.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving on the USS Coolidge 43rd Infantry Division in the Pacific Theatre.

Mr. Clemons was a member of the Rutland American Legion Post 31, the Rutland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 646 and the Rutland Moose Lodge.

He was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Troiano of Hampton, N.H.; three stepdaughters, Judith Bischoff of Columbus, Ohio, Betty Kurek of Bristol and Sandra Bernardo of Burton, S.C.; a stepson, John Decker; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Christine; a son, David; two stepchildren, Mike Decker and Esther Stevens; and a sister.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford. Committal services will be held at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery in Pittsford.

Friends may call Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, Central Vermont/New Hampshire Valley Chapter, 117 Strongs Ave., Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the Barnard Funeral Home.

Josephine S. Haynes

Josephine S. Haynes, 80, of Rutland died Jan. 4, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 31, 1920, in Rutland, daughter of James and Gaetana (Louzza) Sangra.

She graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in 1939.

She married Charles F. Haynes on April 19, 1947, at St. Peter's Church. He died in 1998.

Mrs. Haynes worked for the state of Vermont, Department of Social Welfare, in Rutland.

She was a member of St. Peter's Church and the Emblem Club. She was also an active member of The Club for 62 years.

Survivors include two sons, David C. Haynes of Glastonbury, Conn., and John F. Haynes of Rutland; two daughters, Mary Grace Haynes of Rutland and Patricia Godnick of Kingsbury, N.Y.; a sister, Rose Deletoso of Rutland; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Virginia Garofano, Mary Grace Sangra and Helen Louise Sangra.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Church. A private burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Joan R. Griffin

PROCTOR - Joan R. Griffin, 67, died Jan. 3, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

She was born May 30, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, daughter of Steve and Susan (Galo) Dovala.

She graduated from high school in Cleveland, Ohio.

She worked for the Vermont Marble Company, Callahan AMS Division, as a blueprint operator for many years and later as a sales clerk for the Vermont Marble Exhibit.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Proctor.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Claude A. Griffin of Proctor; three sons, Lenn C. Griffin of Bradenton, Fla., Brian S. Griffin of Cuttingsville and David S. Griffin of Rutland; a daughter, Terri S. Rayon of Greenville, S.C.; a brother, David Dovala of Casper, Wyo.; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Proctor. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Proctor.

Friends may call Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Kenneth W. Marcy

POULTNEY - Kenneth W. Marcy, 75, formerly of Middletown Springs, died Jan. 3, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 8, 1925, in Hampton, N.Y., son of Joseph E. and Susan L. (Lynch) Marcy.

He graduated from Middletown Springs High School.

He married Rebecca Giroux on Dec. 9, 1956, in Poultney.

Mr. Marcy and his brother, Joseph "Bud" Marcy, purchased a gas station in Poultney in 1952, renaming it Marcy Brother's Service Station. Mr. Marcy operated the business until 1989, when he sold it.

He was a member of the J. Claire Carmody Post 39 and the American Legion of Poultney and was a former member of the Poultney Fish and Game Club. He sponsored a Poultney Little League baseball team for many years and operated the Base Two relay dispatch for Poultney Rescue Squad from the Marcy Brother's Service Station for many years.

Survivors include his wife of Poultney; four children; five sisters; four brothers; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be no funeral service. Burial will be held at a later date in Pleasant View Cemetery in Middletown Springs.

Calling hours will be held Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home, 266 Allen Ave., Poultney.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Poultney Rescue Squad or the American Lung Association of Vermont through the office of the funeral home, P.O. Box 181, Poultney, 05764.
