Margaret M. Dandeneau
QUECHEE - Margaret Mary Dandeneau, 64, died Dec. 27, 2000, in a motor vehicle accident in Hartford.
She was born Nov. 5, 1936, in Providence, R.I., daughter of Noel Gagner and Margaret Mary (Mulligan) Gagner.
She graduated from Bayview Academy in Central Falls, R.I., and Johnson and Whales in Providence, R.I. with a degree in business administration.
She married Roger E. Dandeneau on Nov. 21, 1959.
In 1984, she moved to Vermont, and from 1985 to the present she worked for the town of Hartford as an administrative assistant.
Mrs. Dandeneau was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Woodstock, where she sang in the choir and was a eucharistic minister.
Survivors include her husband of Quechee; three sons, John "Jay" Dandeneau of Hartland, Steven R. Dandeneau of Quechee and Kenneth J. Dandeneau of Crested Butte, Colo.; two daughters, Mary Claire Givelber of Naperville, Ill., and Suzanne M. Moody of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Cylvia Dolan of Quechee and Judith Smith of Katenville, Md.; a brother, Raymond Gagner of Hawaii; five grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at noon at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Woodstock with the Rev. William P. Gallagher officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Woodstock.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Cabot Funeral Home.
Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Haiti Fund of the Religious Jesus of Mary, 3029 Godwin Terrace, Bronx, N.Y., 10463.

Edward Policastro Jr.
BENNINGTON - Edward Policastro Jr., 60, died Dec. 22, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 4, 1940, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of Josephine (Slominski) and Edward Policastro Sr.
Mr. Policastro worked for the town of Oyster Bay, Long Island, N.Y.
Survivors include a brother, Michael C. Policastro of Binghamton, N.Y.; two sisters, Phyllis Policastro and Karen Policastro, both of Farmingdale, N.Y.; and a nephew.
The graveside committal service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at 1:45 p.m. in St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y.

Ernest R. Murray
BENNINGTON - Ernest R. Murray, 59, died Dec. 27, 2000, at his residence after a long illness.
He was born Oct. 3, 1941, in Cambridge, N.Y., son of Ernest C. and Eleanor (Noyes) Murray.
He received his education in North Bennington and graduated from the former North Bennington High School in 1960.
Mr. Murray married Janet Caron on June 29, 1963, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington.
He worked at Economy Graphics in North Bennington for 16 years and at Eveready Battery for 22 years until the time of his retirement.
He was in the U.S. Army reserves and was honorably discharged in 1966.
Mr. Murray was a member of the American Legion Post 13 and the Loyal Order of Moose 1233.
His hobbies included NASCAR, hunting and fishing. He was also an avid Boston Red Sox fan. While a student at North Bennington High School, he excelled in baseball and basketball, where he pitched a no-hitter and also scored a record of 50 points in a basketball game.
Survivors include his wife of Bennington; three daughters, Tammy Marbot of White Creek, N.Y., and Patricia Brochu and Cynthia Murray, both of Bennington; two sons, Dennis Murray of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and Ernest C. Murray of Hinesburg; four sisters, Monica A. Murray and Theresa Allard, both of Bennington, Judith E. Way of Pownal and Lorraine Ordway of Waltham, Mass.; two brothers, Colonel Raymond C. Murray, USAF Ret., of Austin, Texas and Bernard Murray of Bennington; 14 grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Morin and Ernest L. Murray Jr.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home with a prayer and at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated. Burial will be held in St. John's Cemetery in North Bennington.
A remembrance gathering for friends will be held at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Parish Center for a time of sharing and refreshment after the committal service in St. John's Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home. The vigil service will also be offered Friday evening.

Alta C. Thayer rites
ARLINGTON - The service to remember the life of Alta C. Thayer, 96, who died Dec. 22, 2000, at her residence, was held Thursday at the Federated Church of East Arlington with the Rev. Joan N. O'Gorman, pastor, officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Danby Cemetery.
A time of fellowship followed in Bailey Hall in East Arlington.
Mrs. Thayer is survived by a sister, Mildred Lidstone of Wallingford.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.
Clarice M. Squiers
ARLINGTON - The Liturgy for the Burial of the Dead for Clarice May Squiers, 92, who died Dec. 26, 2000, in Bennington, was held Thursday at St. James Episcopal Church in Arlington with Rector Bradford Clark officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington.
Organist was Lance Reed and vocalists were Noel Colon, a grandson-in-law and Arnet Mathers.
Words of remembrance were offered by Cindy Hurd, a granddaughter.
Pallbearers were Jerry Coulter Jr., Rick Coulter, Raymond Squiers Jr., Rodney Squiers, Jonathan Colon and Noel Colon.
Mrs. Squiers is survived by two half-sisters, Ida and Aloise.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.
Verne M. Bass Howe
WILMINGTON - Verne Madeline Bass Howe, 75, died Dec. 26, 2000, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 6, 1925, in North Adams, Mass., daughter of Mary Madeline Geraghty Bass and Harold A. Bass.
She earned a bachelor's of science degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a doctorate from Union Institute.
She married Ralph W. Howe Jr. on July 19, 1953, in Wilmington. He died in September.
Mrs. Howe was a consultant at Arthur D. Little in Cambridge, Mass., from 1947 to 1953, the director of environmental programs at Southern Vermont College in Bennington from 1975 to1994, and an environmental consultant with the Howe Associates from 1985 to 2000.
She was a professional member of National Association of Environmental Professionals, National Society for Environmental History, New England Environmental Network, Vermont Statewide Environmental Education Program, New England Environmental Education Association and its Northern New England Section, and the North American Association for Environmental Education.
On the local and state level, Mrs. Howe was an active member of many committees and organizations, including the Wilmington Economic Development Committee from 1996 to 1999, the Deerfield Valley Transit Association board from 1996 to 1997, Deerfield Valley Transportation Advisory Committee, CAG 1994 to 2000, and a Wilmington Select Board committee to study the viability of a project to relocate the village center.
She was also active in the Wilmington Congregational Church, where she was a leader in the Sunday school, and was a founder of the Beaver Brook kindergarten.
She was an amateur painter and potter and enjoyed gardening and photography.
She has published numerous articles and received many awards for her services and contributions to society.
Survivors include four children Ralph W. Howe III of Plainfield, Nancy Howe-Ford of West Sand Lake, N.Y., John H. Howe of Burlington and Jane Boucher of Montpelier; a sister, Marion Jones of Norwich, Conn.; a brother, Leonard Johnson of Wilmington; an aunt; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
The memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wilmington Congregational Church, with a reception to follow at the Wilmington Town Hall.

Josephine M. Stephens
BRADFORD - Josephine M. Stephens, 78, of Wilmington, Mass., and formerly a longtime resident of Bradford, died Dec. 22, 2000, at the Sunbridge Nursing Home in Wilmington.
She was born Oct. 11, 1922, in Bradford, daughter of Andrew and Mary (Bowen) Emerson.
She was educated in the Bradford schools and graduated from Bradford Academy in 1940. She then attended Temple University.
She was married to Norton Stephens on May 3, 1942, in Outon, Md. He died in 1972.
Mrs. Stephens had been employed by the Vermont State Highway Department in civil service for 19 years and more recently by the Fairlee Motel.
She was a member of the Orange East Senior Center.
Survivors include four daughters, Mary Provost of Shrewsbury, Mass., Gail Welch of Hopkinton, Mass., June Gates of Tewksbury, Mass., and Vera Stephens of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Frances Thurston of Sheffield; two brothers, Wesley Emerson of South Royalton and William Emerson of Brookfield, Mass.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by four sisters, Edith Brown, Elizabeth Penn, Bertha Emerson and Susie Maynard; and five brothers, Andrew Emerson, Frank Emerson, John Emerson, Clifford Emerson and Hollis Emerson.
Graveside funeral services will be held at a later date in Sawyer Cemetery in Bradford.
There will be no calling hours.

Marc Miller
Marc Miller, 42, formerly of Spring Lake Ranch, died Dec. 22, 2000, in Baltimore, Md., of complications from surgery and pneumonia.
He was born July 11, 1958, son of Henry D. and Barbara D. Miller.
Mr. Miller was employed at the Rutland Free Library and was also a volunteer there.
The memorial service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Spring Lake Ranch.

LeRoy "Pete" Clemons, 81, died Jan. 2, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Martha S. Poljacik
PITTSFORD - Martha S. (Keith) Poljacik, 48, died Jan. 2, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born March 6, 1952, in Burlington, daughter of Robert L. and Anne (Wade) Sird.
She graduated from Otter Valley Union High School.
She was married to Patrick T. Keith Jr. on June 3, 1972, at St. Alphonsus Church in Pittsford. He died in 1995. She was later married to Kevin Poljacik on Feb. 11, 2000.
Mrs. Poljacik was employed by several area businesses over the years, most recently spending time caring for her family.
Survivors include her father, Robert L. Sird of Pittsford; her husband of Pittsford; a daughter, Lisa Keith-Reed of Rutland; two sons, Patrick T. Keith III of Brandon and Thomas R. Keith of Pittsford; a stepson, Jared Poljacik of Pittsford; three grandchildren; her birth mother, Lorraine Dollaire; two sisters, Pamela and Rhonda Pelletier; and two brothers, Dan and Tim Dollaire, all of Connecticut.
She was predeceased by her mother, Anne, in 1991; and her brother, Donald L. Sird, in 1989.
The funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford. Burial will be held at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery in Pittsford.
Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
