Phyllis J. Hurlbut, age 77, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday morning, April 20, 2010, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
She was born Aug. 3, 1932, in Sutton, Quebec, the daughter of the late William E. and Edith A. (Benson) Poirier.
Phyllis was raised in Sutton and had worked in the yarn mill there as a young girl. She married William D. Hurlbut on Jan. 27, 1953. He predeceased her on Sept. 3, 1986. She had made her home at the Ave Maria Community Care Home in Richford since February and prior to that she made her home with her daughter in Swanton for eight years.
Phyllis was a housewife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening and freezing the vegetables she grew, going to yard sales, listening to country music, especially Merle Haggard, and most of all she loved the time she spent with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters: Janette Hoague of Swanton, Colleen Mills and her lifelong companion Bill Russell of Enosburg Falls, and Billie Harrness and her fiancé Kirt Westcom of East Fairfield; her grandchildren: Shane, Raven, Jamie, Tasney, Tiffany, Brittany, Randi, Ricky Jr., and Brooke; seven great-grandchildren; her siblings: Lenora Murray of Quebec, Marlene Johnson and her husband, Richard, of Connecticut, Bobby Poirier and his wife, Anne, of Ontario, and Billy Poirier and his partner, Liz, of Quebec; several nieces and nephews; and her cat and best friend, Buddy. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a grandson, Skyler Hoague, on Aug. 25, 2002.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 22, 2010, at 7 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in the Fairmont cemetery in Sutton, Quebec.
A time of visitation will be held at the Spears Funeral Home in Richford on Thursday from 6 p.m. until the hour of the memorial service.
There will be a gathering at the Richochet following the funeral service.

ALBERT J. KIROUAC, SR.

Mr. Albert J. Kirouac Sr., age 88, died Tuesday, April 20, 2010, in Redstone Villa, following a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Highgate, May 15, 1921, son of the late Wilfred and Blanche (LaRoche) Kirouac.
He was employed as a mechanic for Simpson Motors and later as parts manager for Handy Toyota, until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post 1. Albert enjoyed, camping, fishing, bowling, snowmobiling, watching NASCAR and playing Yahtzee.
June 20, 1942, he married Berniece Provost. She predeceased him on June 6, 2006, after 63 years of marriage. He is survived by his three children: Anita and her husband, Donald Brown, of Plainfield, N.H., Karen Gonyeau of Georgia, Albert Kirouac Jr. of Sheldon; grandchildren: Charlotte and Aaron Brown, Christopher and his wife, Heather S. Gonyeau, Heather M. Gonyeau, Katie and Hunter Kirouac; great-grandchildren: Nora, Cael and Clare Gonyeau and Gavin Putzier; sisters: Yvonne and her husband, Henry Ouellette, of New Hampshire, Clarice Lord of Florida; brother, Alfred and his wife, Iona Kirouac, of California; brother-in-law, Alfred Torrisi of Massachusetts; sister-in-law, Beatrice Boutwell of New Hampshire; and his aunts, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his son, Brian; son-in-law, Gary Gonyeau; sister, Theresa Torrisi; brothers-in-law, Roland Lord and Francis Boutwell Sr.; and sister-in-law, Margaret and her husband, Walter Burke.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by his cousin, Father Leonidas Laroche, Saturday, April 24, 2010, at 10 a.m., in Holy Angels Church. Interment will be in the Kirouac family lot in Mt. Calvary cemetery. Online condolences may be made by the funeral home Web site: www.bnlfh.com.

Lorraine Marie Gardner, age 73 years, a longtime resident of the Swanton area and more recently of St. Albans City, died late Wednesday morning, April 21, 2010, at her residence on Upper Welden Street.
Born in Champlain, N.Y. on Dec. 26, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Robert Gebo and Hilda St. Andrew - Thompson. In 1956, she was married to Rudolph Gerald Gardner Sr., who predeceased her in 1994. Lorraine was a very devoted wife mother and grandmother who loved taking care of her family. She was a longtime member of the Abenaki Nation of Vermont.
Lorraine leaves her six children: Martha and husband, Michael Sousis, of Troy, N.Y., Robert Gardner and companion, Donna Champaine, of St. Albans, Shirley Gardner and companion, Tim Freehart, of St. Johnsbury, Rudolph Gardner Jr. of St. Albans, Sharon Gardner of St. Albans, and Michael Allen Gardner of Vermont; a sister, Barbara McCarthy of Watervliet, N.Y.; as well as many grand and great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She also leaves two very special nieces, “her angels” who cared for her continually throughout her illness, Brenda Young of Highgate and Linda Billow of St. Albans.
Besides her parents and husband, Rudolph Sr., Lorraine was predeceased by a son, Terry Gardner in 1995; two sisters, Sylvia Chaplin and Margaret Lashway; and a brother, James Thompson Jr.
A Funeral Service will be held Friday, April 23, 2010, at 11 a.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton (868-3331). Father Thomas D. Nadeau will officiate. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Gardner family lot in St. Mary’s cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday morning from 10 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.

Elizabeth Farrar, age 95, passed away on April 21, 2010, at the Franklin County Rehab Center, where she hade spent the last month after a short illness.
Betty, as she was know by her many friends, moved to St. Albans 10 years ago at the age of 85 to start a new and active life. Although she knew no one in the area except her nephew, Bob Farrar, and his family, she was soon active in the community. She was a member of Autonoe club and played bridge several times a week with them. She did invaluable research and other services for Franklin County Historical Museum. Betty was extremely pleased and gratified by the warm reception she received in St. Albans and many true friends she made. Her 90th birthday party at the St. Albans Historical Museum was attended by many, many well-wishers.
Betty was born in Lincoln, Mass., on Oct. 4, 1914, the daughter of Herbert Giles Farrar and Edith Biggs Farrar. She graduated from Concord High school in 1931, and received her bachelor’s degree in library science from Simmons College in Boston in 1936. She then began her career as a reference librarian in libraries throughout the country. She was a librarian at the Massachusetts General Hospital; Fort Devens, Mass.; Portland, Ore.; Concord, N.H.; midland, Mich.; Milburn, N.J.; and Sharon, Mass. She was predeceased by three sisters and one brother: Margaret Farrar Halliwell of Rehoboth, Mass.; Helen Farrar Fletcher of Bedford, N.H.; Priscilla Farrar Cram, of San Bernadino, Calif.; and John Biggs Farrar of Dighton, Mass.
Betty was extremely fond of, and devoted to, her nephews and their families: Robert and Susan Farrar of St. Albans, and their children, Sam Farrar of South Burlington, and Caitlyn Farrar, presently of Santiago, Chile; Richard and Debbie Farrar of Falmouth, Mass., and their children, Jeff and Mary Jo Farrar of Wilton, Conn., and their two sons, Cameron Farrar and Ryan Farrar; Christine Farrar and her husband, Steve Sirois, of Yellowstone National Park, Wyo.; John Fletcher of Palm Springs, Calif.; and Jim and Laurie Cram of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.
There will be a memorial service later this spring. Burial will follow at New cemetery, in Bedford, N.H.
The family expresses its gratitude for the care Betty received at the Holiday House during the last several years and especially for the nursing care she received at the Franklin County Rehab Center over the past several weeks.

Sally Ann Blondo, age 61 years, a longtime resident of Swanton and more recently of Nason Street, St. Albans City, died Thursday morning, April 22, 2010, at the Northwestern Medical Center, following a three-year battle with cancer.
Born in St. Albans on May 23, 1948, she was the daughter of Stanley A. and Marion (Butler) Kubas. She received her education in St. Albans schools, graduating in 1966 from Bellows Free Academy. On Jan. 20, 1968, she was married to Paul Blondo, who predeceased her tragically on Sept. 13, 1975.
For the past 12 years, Sally has been associated with the State of Vermont at the Vermont Welcome Center, South Bound on I-89 in Georgia. She was also very active during that time in Agri-Tourism and received the Friends of the Farmer Award. In earlier years, she had also been employed by the Union Carbide Corp., IBM and Jordan’s Construction. Sally enjoyed anything that had to do with the outdoors, including fishing, hunting, boating, bird watching and skiing. She also enjoyed watching golf and was a devoted Tiger Woods fan. She loved her Mustang convertibles and was nicknamed “Mustang Sally.” In earlier years she played in both St. Albans Bowling and Softball Leagues.
Sally will always be remembered for her devotion and support of other cancer patients and was very involved in many cancer events especially Relay for Life and Weekend of Hope. Her motto and license plates were LUVNLF, “Loving Life.”
She leaves her father, Stanley A. Kubas, of St. Albans; two daughters: Lori Audet and husband, Mark, and Carrie Reynolds and husband, Lynward, all of Swanton; three grandchildren: Alyssa and Alex Audet and Dylan Wescott. Also surviving are her brothers and sisters: Daniel Kubas of St. Albans, Nancy Fiske and husband, Wayne, of Franklin and Bonnie Kubas, John Kubas and Janet Champagne, all of St. Albans; sister-in-law, Nancy Davis of Florida; a very special sister-in-law, Darla Blondo of Swanton; special friends, Carolyn Horton, Penny Libercent, Linda Unwin, and Pam Skrilete; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins; as well as many friends and caring neighbors.
Sally’s’ family would like to offer their “sincerest thanks” to her caring physicians, the Franklin County Home Health Agency and St. Albans Health Care and Rehabilitation Center for all of their care and support during long her illness.
Besides her husband, Paul, she was predeceased by her mother, Marion Kubas, in 1980; stepmother, Mary Heald; brother-in-law, David Blondo, on Oct. 4, 2009; and sister and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Jimmy Calabrese and Red Davis.

Ronald Walter Lumbra, age 87, passed away unexpectedly, Thursday, May 13, 2010, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
He was born Oct. 26, 1922, in Montgomery, the son of the late Walter and Matilda (Donna) Lumbra.
He attended school in Montgomery. In 1944, he entered the U.S. Army serving in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II, receiving his honorable discharge in 1946. He worked at the Asbestos Mines, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Connecticut and then returned to Vermont and started the Citgo Station in Montgomery which he operated until he sold it in 1969. He then started an auto parts distribution business which he operated until he retired in 1986.
He was a member of St. Isidores Catholic Church and a 65-year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He loved gardening, watching the Boston Red Sox, and his old Cub Cadet tractor.
He is survived by his wife, Eva (Lortie) Lumbra, of Montgomery Center. Ronald and Eva were married on Aug. 8, 1949. He is also survived by his children, Ronnie Lumbra, his wife, Mitzi, and their children, Casi and Evan of Rye, N.Y., Lori Stewart, her husband, Ryan, and their children, Darian and Samantha of Lyndon, and Gary Lumbra, his wife, Bobbi Jo, and their children, Colby Tanner, Issac, Emily and Natalie, of Montgomery Center; his sister, Lorraine Gillis, of Montgomery Center; a sister-in-law, Millie Lumbra of Bangor, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Roy Lumbra and his wife, Theresa, Arthur Lumbra and his wife, Audrey, Allen Lumbra, Oscar Lumbra and his wife, Floris, and Austin Lumbra and his wife, Alberta; and his sisters, Viola Tanner and her husband, Leo, and Martha Ploof and her husband, Rolland.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, May 17, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Isidores Catholic Church in Montgomery Center. Interment will follow in St. Isidores cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

Edward J. Therrien, age 83, passed away at his home on Sunday afternoon, May 16, 2010, following a two-year struggle with cancer.
In keeping with Ed’s wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no visiting hours.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010, at 2 p.m. at St. Patrick’s cemetery in Fairfield Center with Rev. Daniel Jordan officiating.

DANNY J. SCANLON, SR.
TOLEDO, OHIO / ST. ALBANS, Vt.

Danny J. Scanlon Sr., age 65, of Toledo, Ohio, and St. Albans, Vt., passed away unexpectedly at his daughter’s home in Toledo, on May 12, 2010. He was born in St. Albans, Vt. on June 14, 1944, one of three children to the late James Scanlon and Eunice (McCarthy) Scanlon.
Danny was a Veteran having served with the U.S. Navy. He was employed as a conductor and worked for the railroad for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Scanlon, and sister, Colleen. He leaves his brother, Gary Scanlon. Danny is survived by his loving children, Danny (Kelly) Scanlon Jr., Mary (Donald) Robtoy and Lisa Scanlon; eight grandchildren; and many loving friends.
Interment will be at his hometown in St. Albans, and will be announced by Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
Those wishing a show of sympathy are asked to consider contributions to a charity of the donor’s choice in Danny’s memory.

Eleanor Francis (Pelkey) Brouillette Warner, age 81, widow of the late Branch H. Warner, died May 12, 2010, at her home in St. Albans.
She was born Feb. 19, 1929, in Fairfield, the eldest daughter of Ralph and Eunice (Mitchell) Pelkey.
She married Arthur “Bo” Brouillette in 1948, on Oct. 6, in Holy Angels church in St. Albans. Together they had three children.
Eleanor leaves her two daughters, Judy Goulette of Swanton, and Nancy Brooks and her spouse, Chuck Brooks, of Underhill. She was predeceased by her son, Allen Arthur Brouillette, on March 5, 2006.
On Sept. 15, 1984, she married her late husband, Branch H. Warner
She also leaves her brothers, Ralph and his spouse, LaDonna, Wayne and his spouse, Anna; her sisters, Betty and her spouse, Ernest Parrotte, Beverly Parrotte, Iris “Robin” Jones, and Laura Kittell; several nieces and nephews; as well as special friends.
Eleanor leaves her grandchildren: Kelley Folsom, Wendy and Trevor Cassidy, Amy and Bill Vincelette, Chip and Tracy Brooks, Trevor and Sara Brooks, Matt (Brouillette) and Melody Goodin, and Mark (Brouillette) Goodin; her great-grandchildren: Asher, Jonica, Lucy, Jasmine, Jacob, Logan, Isaac, Kyla, Elise, Gwendalyn, Jayden Douglas, Skip, Megan, and Jayden Michael.
Eleanor was a member of St. Mary’s Church, life member of VFW 758 Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary Post 1, and Retired CVRR Veterans.
Her career spanned many different fields and she did exceedingly well in her endeavors. She worked for Regal Art Press, W.T. Grants and Woolworths, and as a medical receptionist for Dr. Ed Mortin and Dr. Martin Wenner.
She had many hobbies and did excellent work, such as arts and crafts, poetry, home decorator, and flower arranging. She took several pleasure trips, and did gourmet cooking, and enjoyed bowling, and golf.
Besides her son, Allen, Eleanor was predeceased by her late husband, Branch; her parents; and her youngest sister, Shirley; as well as a brother-in-law, Leslie Parrotte; and son-in-law, Douglas Goulette.
Her wishes will be carried out to the fullest. There will be no visiting hours or memorial service. Her ashes will be entombed in the Riverside cemetery in Swanton, to be with her late husband, Branch, on Tuesday, May 18, at 11 a.m. The internment will be family only.
